I am an original NES Top Loader buyer (and still have it) growing up I was just at that age when the NES was starting to become pretty old and my parents didnt want to get an outdated system so I only got to play NES at friends and neighbors houses and had SNES and Genesis instead. It wasn't until after I'd already gotten my N64 that I got a Summer job in 1997 selling catalog items door to door at a 50 cent profit per item, so I had to make 100 catalog sales in order to get the $49.99 it cost for a brand new NES Top Loader at Kay Bee Toys. I wanted it real bad after going to an Uncles house in Florida at the start of the year and getting to play Mario 3 for the first time in years, as he still had an original NES hooked up in his living room at that time. By '97, it was getting a bit rare to see NES still hooked up in peoples living rooms. When I bought my Top Loader, I got the very last one on the shelf, it was there for weeks and I would go back every few days to make sure it was still there. I was ten years old. At the time there were still quite a few brand new NES games still sold in stores, usually for $9.99 to $19.99. My first three games were Zelda II (grey version) Final Fantasy and Yoshi's Cookie. That was the first system I ever bought with my own money and was proud that I worked hard to get it.
Your story makes me feel so much nostalgia for the 90's! I still can tap into the amazement I felt when I got my Genesis for Christmas one year. And then a bit later the awe I had when I first witnessed Mario in 3D! We couldn't believe that it was possible for a game like that to exist at the time! And then I also remember when I got the Nintendo GameCube one year. I thought it was peak technology and felt so much pride about my game console and Nintendo (even though the critics panned the Gamecube). Thank you for your story

2:26 Actually, a lot of unlicensed games won't work on it because they were designed around the 10NES chip. With that chip gone, the circuit is incomplete and the game can't boot.
Now I am even more pissed off at my dumb ass (much younger) cousin. My Cousin "barrowed" my grandmothers top loader NES and some games and then sold them without her consent (boy was she pissed), and it was an AV out model. Fortunately she was smart enough to only let him barrow a few games at a time. The games are the same games I used to play when I would go to her house when I was a Kid back in the 80's. So when she passed away I made damn sure I got a hold of them before he could. They are now safely in my collection.
We all have cousin's and family members like this I feel for ya. It's like grandma throwing out a box of baseball cards from the early 1960's you did WHAT!!!!!!!!. Or putting all the best games in a garage sale and leaving you with all the really shitty games. That weren't worth playing.
I got a regular NES in its box 3 weeks ago for my birthday. It is HUGE!! And i did experience the blinking light and my mom was just laughing at me. So i think the NES 2 is great for me if i want to play the games a little more often so i dont break my original NES. It makes it a great collection item n.n i see them in my mall all the time.
Won one of these in a Coco Pops competition when I was a kid. It was my first system! Became a Nintendo fanboy and never looked back. Never realised until now that it was the NES "2"
What's the music at 3:00? Also, I knew a guy who had an official top loader with AV out but he sold it at a garage sale for like $30 or something. Poor guy...
I never knew about the A/V out version, thanks. Rather funny story: August 2004 - I bought a copy of Dr. Mario for NES and it was very discolored on the back, to the point of being a mustard color. January 2005 - I bought a NES Top loader also with a suntan on the back, but about fifty miles from where I found the copy of Dr. Mario. Some time later - I found they both fit together perfectly with the "tan lines". After that: I sold both together.
Depending on how enthusiastic you are about NES gaming you can get the top loader modded to use composite cables and fix the line issue to make it into the ultimate NES.
The original NES is so much beautiful. Its actualy very impressive how modern and cool it's design still looks after almost 30 years! Same with the original Game Boy.
True, but the NES Top Loader was meant to fix problems the original one had, because even do the original NES is an iconic videogame console, it was notorious for having software issues, the NES 2 was made to fix them, and it also sold for $50 which is a good and fair price
@@ethanriem9242 agree - thought it was funny they tried to have a "sleeker look" but the new one looks dramatically worse (even if functionality was improved)
I got the NES-101 and it rocks. I still have the Toaster model which I got for my 10th birthday. I even own a Japanese Famicom! I am so glad to have grown up on the NES/Famicom!
I've done a number of Composite video mods on these in which i remove the RF box and install a video amp and RCA and TRS jacks in it's place. This combined with wrapping a grounded strip of copper tape around the PPU makes the video quality every bit as good as the front loader in my experience. Keep me in mind if you ever wanted that done.
Another problem is getting the cartridge out because it's held in place so well. My NES2 doesn't work because the R/F is broken and jammed in the thing.
Oh the blowing into your cartridge, memories. Also, speaking of contacts not connecting, my stepbrother found a janky solution by sliding either another cartridge on top of the one your attempting to play, inside of the input, or one of the black, J shaped cartridge sleeves that were sold at any retailer or rental store. This gave additional pressure to make for better contact of the leads.
I thought of that too! The real reason is that he's showing B-roll footage with no sound, but still playing the sound from the main footage. He pressed the button in the main footage, which is not visible. Notice how you don't hear anything when he first turns it "off"
1:22 Huh... I've never noticed that before. I've never seen the two models of the NES side by side until now (and I've still never seen either one in person), so I had no idea there was that big a size difference. The more you know! 1:53 Also, pretty funny you chose the music from _Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout_ for this video, seeing how that's the game that comes to my mind whenever I see a Top Loader (since I first saw one in the AVGN's review of the game).
the only issue I could see with this is how tall it is and where you would find a place for it. Takes up a lot of vertical room. But this is super interesting because I've never heard of this before, think I'm hooked on Gaming Historian.
The NES-101 control deck features the same 7-pin controller ports as the NES-001 and is compatible with all the same controllers and peripherals. The console came packaged with a similarly-redesigned version of the standard NES controller (model number NES-039), nicknamed the "dogbone" controller due to its shape, instead of the original NES-004 model controller. While the NES-101 console only came with one controller, the NES-039 controller was also sold by itself and is fully compatible with either version of the NES control deck. The NES-039 controller more closely resemble the Super NES controller, with rounded edges that fit more ergonomically in the hands than the rectangular design of the NES-004 model. The A and B buttons were also set at an angle to mimic the Super NES controller as well, as provide better ergonomics. Because of its ergonomic shape, the NES-039 model controller does not fit in R.O.B. 's controller slot.
Nice video. I never understood why Nintendo decided to use that diagonal configuration for the BA buttons, that control looks so uncomfortable, for me it's much more logic a diagonal in the opposite direction, (or the horizontal configuration of the original Famicom-NES) since I like to press B with the tip of the thumb and A with the middle of the thumb. They fixed this in the SNES with the Y button and B button being the more used ones, and usually they behave just like the BA of the NES. But I still think they should have labeled Y as B, and B as A in the SNES controller. :)
Would be cool to have a video detailing the legal battle between Nintendo and Game Genie. I wonder if similar disputes happened with Game Shark and Action Replay as well.
Action Replay never happen cause Datel only sell those overseas, it wasn't until the GBA/GameCube era that they started selling in NA market. Because Galoob won and Game Genie is selling, GameShark had no problem selling either. The only thing is Nintendo and Sony considered these unofficials and want gamers to not use them whereas Sega and 3DO support these cheat devices as they are good tools for enhancing game experience. Sony dislike these so much they even removed the expansion port from the back of later PlayStation models just so players can't use GameShark anymore. Because of this GameShark later comes as memory card instead and were pre-installed with cheats for certain games.
Nice vid. I have got to get me an NES 2. My original box that my sister bought me in 1990 still works, but I can only expect the blinking to get worse over time.
Woot. I still have my NES2 along with an original NES and one of the Retron HD NES models that came out for use with HDMI. I'll have to dig out the NES 2 because I can't remember what the output is.
When the Gaming Historian said NES 2 didn't have the 8 pin connector issue I was sold right away. I plan to get the NES Top Loader due to that waste of time fixing it myself many times which is annoying. The only bad thing is that the AV version is rare. Cool video. ^_^
I see three additional pieces of information that were missed in the older video, information in his script had a smoother delivery, and removal of the introduction where he asked GameStop employees if they could identify the NES 2.
Zestypanda I watched the video, that's why I think they missed the opportunity, they should have made the av one massive, like the regular edition, not just a mail order replacement or limited edition.
It's a super tight fit, but I get my Game Genie to work just fine on it, and if I want to take it out I have to really tug on it, but I haven't had it hurt anything. 24 years strong, and it still works like a dream! : )
0:26 *Only in North America* Europe rocked out with PC's such as the Commodore 64 back then. The NES and even Master System weren't doing so well here that they made very little influence in the market.
Yeah, but as the first reply said you got a lot of flickering and slowdown, things people did complaina bout. Then there was when 3D started, and everyone suddenly went crazy for 3D, saying that 2D games were outdated yet more 2D games are made then than are made now. And now we've moved on to 4K, with Sony and microsoft pushing it heavily, despite neither of their consoles being any good at it. It's marketing for the sake of marketing, which is why you have PC owners trying to explain that it's not the best way to experience games but people have to justify their purchases somehow. Yes I know this is a 3 year old comment on a 5 year old video.
The NES-101 "Top-loader" can be AV modded with composite output. If it's done correctly it will significantly improve the picture quality, and remove the "jail-bars" from the screen. I AV modded mine about a year ago, it it looks just as good as my NES-001 using composite and is much more reliable.
3:28 I wanted to pick up a Toploader for the cooler Controllers, I ended up with an AV Version. *Now I have a competent solution to play FamiCom games in my PAL region, with the SNES power adaptor without any hardware modifications!*
I bought one at a used game shop in 2002 but was unaware going in about the faint vertical line issue being a common problem. When I took it back to the store that same day for a refund (big fat mistake from a collector’s standpoint) they only game me store credit, so I picked up a few GameCube games, one of which was Metroid Prime. I was still pissed about not getting my money back, but 21 years later I am more pissed that I didn’t just keep the damn thing, warts and all. I never would have used it because I just could not stand those vertical lines, but at least it would have looked nice on the shelf.
will you do an updated version of the snes 2? also will you do videos about the different models of sega saturn and playstation 1 and its different controllers?
I had the AV out one when I was a kid. I don't know where where it ended up. But I had the damn thing. Pretty sure my father sold or gave it away along with all my other cool and super valuable childhood things. Including several boxes of super early Magic cards that my brother and I had.. We started really early (like 94-95) and collected a LOT... Thousands of cards... My brother claims he had like 4 or 5 black lotus'.. I don't know about that, but we surely had a ton of very valuable cards. Dad denies it to this day! Dude didn't get rid of our crappy stuff just the good stuff! haha
Lots of people, including myself, prefer the front loader for aesthetic purposes in my opinion. But my friend back in the day had the top loader and we never ever had to worry about blowing in the cartridge or constantly pushing the game back down when we saw the red light flashing on my system. The top loader played games so much better, but to me there is just something about the original front loader that makes me like it much more regardless.
Bought one of these new when they first came out. The day I bought it I also bought Mega Man 6 and Startropics II Zoda's Revenge. I still have the console and play it on a regular basis. My favorite thing about it was the new controller design. It's so much more comfortable in the hand than the old square palm stabbers, plus the raised "A" and "B" buttons provide for more comfort than one would think. Overall the best aspect of it was definitely not having to clean games constantly to get them to work. I still have to do some cleaning here and there, but I don't feel like cursing at god like I did with my NES as a kid.
I'm liking this just because you used StarTropics to load into the system vs. the original and not having to blow into the cartridge... The review was also good too. :)
I have both NES consoles and modified my top loader to accept composite cables so I now have a console that works well and has a good picture. My toaster model now just sits and collects dust.
This was the first console I ever got. I didn't even know what a gaming console or NES was! I got this and Startropics as my first game. I have to see if I still have this.
Is it region free? I live in italy, and if I buy it, I need it to play european games. I'd also like to know if there is an av adaptor, as I can't find one with av output.
This looks great...When I was young, we had a family computer which in my opinion is one of the best looking classic consoles...This one is not bad though...
Blowing on the cartridge was actually detrimental to the health of said cartridge because the blow would separate the pins from the silicon circuit board and become misaligned.
People forget there was a console war between the NES and the Atari 2600. It was a war that Atari had already lost but the Atari still had alot of players and maintained support until 1992. A lifespan 2.5 times that of the NES.
The more contemporary Atari system was the 7800, released a year after the NES. It was backwards compatible with the 2600 but otherwise had its own library and offered much better competition for the NES. However it didn't sell well and I've never actually seen one owned by anyone.
I got one of these for Xmas in 1993 along with Darkwing Duck, Mega Man 5, and Tiny Toon Adventures. We already had an NES (in 1987) and many games but my mom got me this one when i moved to my aunt's house across the state. My brother then trades it for three Sega Genesis games (Hyperstone Heist, Shinobi III, and Eternal Champions) in 1995 without telling me......... >.< Ugh
The only thing the Game Genie NES-101 "top-loader" adapter did was make it so that the Game Genie would fit. The Game Genie had problems with the connectors getting stuck in the console due to the fact that the connector was slightly wider than the cartridge slot on the new model.
Hearing about the inferiour outputs makes me kinda wish the people behind HDMI solutions for Dreamcast and Game Cube came up with something like this for NES and NES 2 but that's probably a pipe dream.
You can get people who'll mod a Toploader to get composite, and fake stereo if you want to, like GameTechUS, he has a channel on youtube where he shows it. You can also get mods for RGB, and there's an HDMI mod coming soon.
It kinda looks like what would happen if the original NES and the Super Nintendo had a baby.

Sending the adapter is pretty frickin' savage.Lmao Unreal. I've come to find out that the video game scene can actually be pretty ruthless.
And thus a legend was born
I had no idea some were made with an AV out... crazy.
Doesnt anybody miss the good old days of gaming, Just buy a console and play games? not like OMG I NEED 1080 60FPS !
But I need Blast processing! No hype? 16 bit war was basically a hypefest.
And that’s why UA-cam gaming is even harder.
Ever heard of 'bit wars'? Funny to see history repeated itself
Indeed. There hasn't been a time where competition hasn't existed, and if it did happen it would be bad for all because that's how industries work.
The NES-101 "Top-loader" can be AV modded with composite output. If it's done correctly it will significantly improve the picture quality, and remove the "jail-bars" from the screen. I AV modded mine about a year ago, it it looks just as good as my NES-001 using composite and is much more reliable.
Superb video - very informative!
Great review/video. Really enjoyed it.
3:28 I wanted to pick up a Toploader for the cooler Controllers, I ended up with an AV Version. *Now I have a competent solution to play FamiCom games in my PAL region, with the SNES power adaptor without any hardware modifications!*
I actually never knew this was a thing, it kind of looks like it was made my a 3rd-party Company, but it is very interesting nonetheless
the original nes works just the same when the pin connectors are cleaned and the games are clean
pins do wear out on that model
also disabling the lockout chip is helpful getting carts to boot on the first try
I've never gone back to the rectagular controller after using the dogbones. Those things are fantastic.
Conquest of the Crystal Palace music at ~3:30?
You're rad.
You always have the best background music!
will you do an updated version of the snes 2? also will you do videos about the different models of sega saturn and playstation 1 and its different controllers?
I had the AV out one when I was a kid. I don't know where where it ended up. But I had the damn thing. Pretty sure my father sold or gave it away along with all my other cool and super valuable childhood things. Including several boxes of super early Magic cards that my brother and I had.. We started really early (like 94-95) and collected a LOT... Thousands of cards... My brother claims he had like 4 or 5 black lotus'.. I don't know about that, but we surely had a ton of very valuable cards. Dad denies it to this day! Dude didn't get rid of our crappy stuff just the good stuff! haha
Never heard of the NES2, just saw the game genie video. Great video.
Nice reboot! But I miss you on the L7 Podcast!
Played one of these when I was little. Always wondered what this thing was for years after.
In my country the bootleg famicom was more popular because we were in the middle of a recession, so the model two was more common than the VCR model
I prefer the original NES where you load the cartridge in through the front.
Also the original looks cooler imo and you can just replace the 72-pin connector or get a blinking light win
i like the european model NES ^_^
Glad this is re-uploaded, Norm. :)
This looks great...When I was young, we had a family computer which in my opinion is one of the best looking classic consoles...This one is not bad though...
Blowing on the cartridge was actually detrimental to the health of said cartridge because the blow would separate the pins from the silicon circuit board and become misaligned.
Yes I loved the new model and still have it.
NES: My life span was 10 years
PS2: Hold my beer
I've got a few suggestions if you're interested. Lost Vikings, Pacman, Vectorman, Mischief Makers, and Sly Cooper.
I really like your logo. Congrats to your designer!
"10 years is a long time"
Commodore 64: 1982 - 1994
Windows XP: 2001 - 2014
IBM Compatible PC: 1981 - Present
We got a top loader when our original NES died the death. It was incredibly reliable and I think it's around somewhere and probably works.
The music is that adventure island game that's hard as shit
People forget there was a console war between the NES and the Atari 2600. It was a war that Atari had already lost but the Atari still had alot of players and maintained support until 1992. A lifespan 2.5 times that of the NES.
The more contemporary Atari system was the 7800, released a year after the NES. It was backwards compatible with the 2600 but otherwise had its own library and offered much better competition for the NES. However it didn't sell well and I've never actually seen one owned by anyone.
There was a super-rare variant of the NES top loader which used the Multi-Out AV connection instead of RF. VERY hard to find.
It looks like an old Polaroid camera especially the controller port which looks like the viewfinder.
I have one and I love it.
I got one of these for Xmas in 1993 along with Darkwing Duck, Mega Man 5, and Tiny Toon Adventures. We already had an NES (in 1987) and many games but my mom got me this one when i moved to my aunt's house across the state. My brother then trades it for three Sega Genesis games (Hyperstone Heist, Shinobi III, and Eternal Champions) in 1995 without telling me......... >.< Ugh
The game music used, it's from the first stage of Bugs Bunny Biryhday Blowout! Loved that game l!
I have the original model NES. I recently obtained a top loader. The games work with less trouble, wish that it had an av in/out
The only thing the Game Genie NES-101 "top-loader" adapter did was make it so that the Game Genie would fit. The Game Genie had problems with the connectors getting stuck in the console due to the fact that the connector was slightly wider than the cartridge slot on the new model.
gaming historian should colab with cinemassacre on some gaming vids that would be totally radical dudes!
great video as always, Professor!
Hearing about the inferiour outputs makes me kinda wish the people behind HDMI solutions for Dreamcast and Game Cube came up with something like this for NES and NES 2 but that's probably a pipe dream.
i love this channel :)
You can get people who'll mod a Toploader to get composite, and fake stereo if you want to, like GameTechUS, he has a channel on youtube where he shows it.
You can also get mods for RGB, and there's an HDMI mod coming soon.
Wow,how Nostalgia is a great aspect of Life
