So, while Auden certainly focuses on Breughel's Icarus in the second stanza, he alludes to images found in two of Breughel's other works in the first stanza (both of which he viewed at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels in 1939): Lines 3-8: refer to The Census at Bethlehem and Lines 10-13 refer to The Massacre of the Innocents. I've taught this poem for years, staring with a discussion of all three paintings before delving into the poem. Awesome video! But don't you think Auden was alluding to Nativity when he wrote about the ancient men waiting for the miraculous birth? Perhaps the ancient men are tha Magi?
I think that's a very astute observation. It certainly pairs well with the line about martyrdom, and Auden was no stranger to including references to his Christian faith in his poetry. Thanks for sharing your insight!
