Man, I love this song. Johhny is such an underrated Country Music singer. I was born just down the road from J Cash, and I would put J Rodriguez in the top 5-6 Country Music singers.
Why do you say that he's underrated? What the blank does "underrated" mean anyway? He had a great career, sang and wrote really great songs and made millions of his fans happy with his music and was a big country music star. Does that sound like he was underrated?
I believe Willie means he hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves!! Many others today has gotten and doesn't deserve it! He's wonderful pure traditional country!! He should get the Hall of Fame!!
Perhaps after the murder and his drinking and drugging he lost favor with the major labels. That happens. Yes, others did drink and drug but G. Jones stopped, so did Haggard. JR didn't. I am crazy about his singing, the BEST along with Marty Robbins, just as good as Haggard, but we have to consider his personal behavior. It's the way businesses see it. Not a good image. Meanwhile, he was given a gift from God and has enjoyed a good career. Had he not gotten involved with bad stuff, he'd be considered among the top three, I think he is still among the top 3. I literally am in tears when I see where he is today. @@garyolsen3409
I've been listening to, and loving Johnny for 38 years. I was in awe the first time I heard him.sing. He's one of the top 10 in the entire country business of all time. Today's "country" singers just make screaming sounds and the lyrics are indecipherable. You can't tell one from the other. You know it's Johnny when he starts singing the first note. He doesn't need to be identified by a song.
I still can't stop loving his voice!! Truly unique and very country!! Magnetic, magnificent!! I'd love to meet him!! Ive never ever had a chance to go to a concert in my life.. Johnny Rodriguez is extraordinary!!
Johnny is one hell of an entertainer still today. Like you say, better than what you hear on the radio. He's a great entertainer still. Little Lacey in Memphis.
My husband was a big fan .He introduced me to his music .I g just love his music I lost my husband last year . Listening to his music reminds me of him
Just a great tune! This song is one of so many in Jimmy’s catalog that outshine most of the SYKBH. He had so many incredible tunes that most people had no idea existed. Thank you, Jimmy!
I got attached to him way back in like '74 when my oldest daughter was born. Then about a year after she was born, he came to town and I went to see him and took some pics of him and my daughter. Still have them somewhere! We were all babies back then!
Its hard to say why he didn't make it into the country music hall of fame, he damn well deserved it, such a talent, not sure race had anything to do with it, Charley Pride made it in, if it was based on race, one would belive it would be harder for a Black gentleman to get in over others, Charley Pride was a damn good entertainer as well. With that said, im a fan of great music, music isnt a race its a talent not everyone has.
Yes, it is. I listened this morning to his audition songs for Mercury. "I Can't Stop Loving You," just sensational. Of course, they signed him on. Well deserved.
Me and my dad went to see him live right here in my hometown back in the mid 70s. He was almost unheard of back then. I was a whole 13 or 14 at the time!
A truly great, smart song, so well written and sung by the BEST. He obviously caught sight of a pretty girl and flirted with her. So cute, even though I felt jealous as hell! He is the best!
I wrote Hugh Moffatt a fan letter a few weeks back. Sensational lyrics, just the best. If you see him, please tell him a writer in Chicago is so in awe of his writing. Love the, "till a drifter stole him from me, like I stole her from you," so many good lines in that song. And Johnny does the song justice. Love them both.

To those people commenting why doesn't he get the recognition he deserves and why isn't he in the hall of fame, Well just like Freddy Fender, I think we know the answer to that.
I agree. The song, written by Hugh Moffett, is a smart and wonderful song. I write country music, had some recognition, didn't know I could do it till later in life so I have to catch up. This is a GREAT song by a GREAT writer. I'd love to meet the writer and singer. If there weren't sensational writers, there wouldn't be hits like this. And BTW, when someone calls it a novel, songs are all about stories. Let that sink in. Because that person can't do it, doesn't mean this song doesn't have value. It was a HIT!
As I read, JR did not write it. A writer by the name of Hugh Moffett in Nashville. Such smart writing, absolutely respect this writer so much. I write, so when I hear great writing I admire a person who wrote a song like this. Love the word "drifter" in there and "As my eyes fit the darkness." Oh, "fit" was such a smart way to say. Thank you, Hugh Moffett!@@paulawallace9173
Great he deserves all the awards he gets he’s that good so put him in the country HOF this year
I agree 100%. Not only a great singer, he gives his all. He loves what he does.
