Great video! I spent many years in the trade without this kind of help. If your a novice, forget the other videos and stick with this one. Very well done - big thumbs up!
Mate, thank you very much! I’ve never wrenched on a car this ‘deep’, and when i got the chance to buy a Corsa B (which has almost identical engines) with a blown headgasket, i could not resist. Without your video, i wouldn’t have succeeded in the smallest bit. Cheers mate!

No convenient edits, shows the job as it is without a fully equipped garage, putting up with the weather and overcoming the awkward obstacles faced by a DIY mechanic working on his driveway. Respect to you sir!!
A truly excellent 'how to' video. I'm an experienced classic car mechanic but occasionally do 'moderns' too. I still watch videos when a job comes along that I haven't done before. Very good.
I know this is 3 years late but i'm sure people are still watching this super helpful video! Just a tip, you could probably jack the engine up a little bit to get enoughclearance to take out the mount after removing the 3 bolts.
I like the way you get the stuck in as you English people say.. Always I have ever seen good the information provided by this channel. Much enjoyment here in Russia and the very in depth breakdown of events. Forgive my English, not so good. Your enthusiasm for fixing problem is very good.
Thanks for the video! Had to change my head gasket on a Astra h 1.4, and thank God the engine is pretty much the same as the Corsa's, because without this video I was done for :-) You were a God send, thanks again!
For the peice of that kit i always think its worth having a go at doing it yourself, in most cases your car's already written off with head gasket being gone so you're not exactly going to make it worse
Watching the problems you had helps to avoid traps. I will add a few things I found myself. I found that the timing chain could come off once the tensioners were removed without removing the cam sprockets. I did not want to remove the one that had the cam angle sensor. Also I looked for markings on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets and counted the number of chain links between each rather than trying to get top dead centre. Also workshop manuals tell you to do things that are not correct. The manual said the engine had to be lowered out. I lifted mine out upwards. I lifted it upwards till the sump could clear the frame. Then I put a bar across under the gearbox to support the gearbox at that position. This support bar was tied to the car frame. Then I disconnected the gearbox and left the box in the car. The engine came out with room to spare even with the inlet and exhaust manifolds attached. When I put the engine back in I got 2 bolts and cut the heads off and put a screwdriver slot in the end and screwed them into the engine so they would line up with the gearbox. The bolts were about 2 inches long plus a bit of thread. Also I filed a v shape on the clutch plate hub leading edge to guide the gearbox shaft in.
This has happened to my 1.2 59 reg CORSA. Got quoted approx £450 for full repair and replacing chain. Wished I'd seen this and tried it myself. Anyhow great job mate

I had an identical Corsa to that 10 or so years ago .... great little car although it was not that old at the time. It's still on the road according to the MOT website. only thing that annoyed me about it is that there's a metal bar under the seat base foam that used to dig into my right leg. Vauxhall replaced the foam but within weeks it was the same again.
Sometimes the milky oil on the oil refill cap can be from condensation :)) Best thing to do is buy a test kit and look out for the white smoke you cant miss it, Dont forget the head gasket can also leak from the exhaust part of the system.
That strip down all went fairly well,no seized bolt etc.. Jimmy owes you big time now Martin. You will have blame Jimmy's driving style for the blown head gasket.
I think it is down to poor maintenance throughout it's life Nick. No coolant solution corrodes these engines and poor oil changes. Jimmy doesn't thrash about so I know it's not his driving style.
Yes lack of proper maintenance is the problem. My daughter had a Corsa as her first car. The timing chain rattled on that, plus a couple of minor issues and all due to lack of maintenance. Like Jimmy she didn't thrash it around but it ended up an insurance write off..It was a fairly minor collision and not her fault, although the other "experienced mature driver" did try and blame her. Fortunately she was able to prove he was at fault.
The one use, torque to yield, head bolts were said to be designed to give the best clamping action on the head. There is no shortage of blown head gaskets to show that there are still problems. And the added cost of the bolts can make it not worth fixing the engine.

more common on these is the timing chain cover leaks water into the oil and has the same symptoms of a head gasket. the timing chain gets changed with the head gasket to it gets remedied anyway
This head gasket was well gone so needed doing bud.
hello have you checked the antifreeze strenth, I picked up a fiat that had been running round with just water and it corroded the alloy waterway and did the head gasket
I think that's what caused the head gasket failure on this one too. Poor maintenance throughout it's life.
Those Corsa engines are notorious for mayonnaise on the oil cap but that gasket was well blown
When will part 2 be made???
Great Vid..Magic!!!
Very soon as Jimmy wants his car back lol
retrorestore
I really love your Vids as it is all calmly and clearly explained with a little comedy which I absolutely love!!!!
But can I a make a BIG REQUEST could you please make a vid on HOW TO USE A TORQUE WRENCH PROPERLY AND AND HOW TO READ THE TORQING DIAGRAM ON HOW TO WRENCH THE HEAD BACK ONTO THE ENGINE IN THE SPIRAL TIGHENING FASHION WHICH YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT AND THE 60 DEGREE X4 and where to get these diagrams and torqing information....AS I SUFFER FROM DYSLEXIA AND NOT AT ALL GOOD AT MATHS I FIND IT HARD TO UNDERSTAND...SO PLEASE COULD YOU BE SO KIND IN MAKING A VIDEO FOR PEOPLE LIKE US WHO LOVE WORKING ON CARS BUT HAVE DYSLEXIA AND LEARNING DIFFICULTIES!!!!
Many thanks
El😊
Another great vid , I usually F and blind when I can't get bits off lol . how many miles on the clock ? Your so right those cars being thrashed as they are mainly first cars for new drivers . Cheers 👍👍🍻
Poor maintenance on any car will cause these issues. It needs proper coolant which protects the engine and stops corrosion like this has suffered.
Hi great videos. I followed your video part 1 and 2 and did the same to my corsa d. Car now very quiet and going well. The only problem I have is I still here water swooshing around the heater box. I have tried to bleed but still can’t get it sorted. Is there any advice you could give me to sort the problem. Thanks
Graeme.
Well done Graeme, Not sure hat you mean bud .
retrorestore. the cooling system still has air in it. I can hear the air inside the car which seems to be coming from the pipes that supply the heater. It happens when I rave the engine. Just wondering if you have any method of removing the air from the cooling system. Thanks
Graeme.
I have the 1.0 and I only need to do the chain will I have to remove the exhaust manifold throttle body etc or just the rocker cover and cam cover
I don't see why you'd have to remove the exhaust manifold or throttle body bud.
@@retrorestore okay nice one Thankyou also decent video the best one I could find on UA-cam :)
nice video good music 👍👍👍
Im having my vauxhall corsa head gasket repair how long would you say it well take it be two weeks
where did you bought the KIT from ? u got a site ?
Good clear vid,Question... did the crank pulley have a woodruff key or similar ?
Can't remember
@@retrorestore Thats ok.i stripped one today and the pulley is flat sided which in turn runs the oil pump straight off the crank which is directly behind the timing case oil seal........thank you for the reply :} I am a fully qualified mechanic of 30 years but nobody knows everything lol ..thanks again.
would it be worth changing water pump as well,?
@37:34 please count how many sides are on the sockets
hello mate im sorry to bother you i got a question if you dont mind i got a 1.0 corsa c my water pump was leaking so it over heated the engine rattled then conked out i got a error code for bad egr valve so i cleaned it but had drained my battery so charged it but when i put it back on and tried it never started so i shut the bonnet not realising the live terminal touched the bonnet and it was 3 hours before i realised and when i did the terminal was welded to the bonnet is there a chance that its not done anything bad in regards to the terminal touching or would it have definitely caused a problem would really appreciate any advice
Hard to say but it doesn't look good.
hi nice job. how much will it cost to replace a timing chain on vauxhall corsa 2007 1.2? thanks
I don't really know what garages charge but its quite a straightforward job.
Great video!!!!
Good video as normal I like how jimmy turns up at the end martin😂 typical..
Haha, exactly Col. Well spotted lol
Thanks for your help❤
You're welcome 😊
I know you can get a kit that doesn't include the sprockets (a bit cheaper). Would you always change the sprockets?
I think it's wise to as you have it stripped down if you are keeping the car.
seems a lot to undo to the cam ' but just been quioted £450-500 to do by a garage
There you go, it's worth saving that kind of money if you can
Very nice videos! I like how you actually film the video, you do the job, you say it, HOW it is and things to watch out for! Not like some of these other people who just go on and on about pointless, irrelevant stuff, Keep up the good work !! Also, what you got going on with that chassis you got on the stands? :P
Thanks Ash, That chassis is for my Reliant Regal Trotter van restoration, You can see the vids in my car vids playlist.
Cheers
Martin
Very good video,,,
Hi Martin I have a 1.2 Corsa 2007. Do you know if it'll be the same engine, as I need to change my head gasket. Cheers
There will be subtle differences but in general it's a 4 cylinder engine as in my videos if its a petrol engine.
@@retrorestore ok cheers
nice job mate
Thanks Leon Like your new helper Steve btw lol
Cheers
Martin
