This video helped me study Leyendecker’s works so I wrote down some rough translations (so not really accurate just what I understood😓). I'm really late to the part ahhh regardless I hope someone finds it useful when studying his works! The pens he's using is explained by another comment! so I'm just translating in clumps of what they are saying 3:30 When painting this man I'm using lines, Leyendecker often draws lines with brushes, starting from dark colors to lighter ones and then the highlight. Make sure to leave these lines visible at the end. 3:50 Here I'm painting an arm from one of his works. Starting with the dark colors making sure to take into account the direction of the brush lines to evoke three-dimensionality, and then painting in the lighter colors. 4:18 There 2 points I'd like to mention regarding Leyndercker-san’s works (he’s talking about types of processes of painting here I'm pretty sure) 1- Starting with the darker colors and then using a translucent brush to color over it and then adding highlights 2- This is the case with this man with the helmet. Where it's colored thinly with paint before adding the darker colors and then lastly the highlight. Though this is not the general of painting imo. Between these two ways of painting processes, I'd like to show what I think is closer to showing that Leyendecker-ness 5:10 Here I'm starting with a smudged ink pen to do the draft. These lines will remain till the end so be aware of that. 5:25 painting the underpainting with ‘nikko rull wet’. Now regarding the underpainting, in Leyendeckers works usually you can see it in the final result. Ex: on the side of this man's jaw. So we’re gonna do that too. 6:00 Fill in the darker colors, here I’m using ‘nikko rull wet’ to paint in the dark lines. In this reference, the light is coming from the top right so I'm filling in most of the shadows on the bottom left. 6:26 After this I'm using ‘nikko rull wet’ to paint in the lighter colors. Leaving the brightest parts exposed I'm going to add the highlights in the end either way. 6:42 Now this part I think I could have done better, I feel I should have made it more simpler. Moreso I think the mistake made here is that Leyendecker often goes ‘zombie mode’, as in, when painting skin he tries to let the colors come through as little as possible and in the end add warm colors--- that’s his kind of style. 7:00 For example this boy, if you remove the redness on his cheeks his face becomes less of this reddish hue it had going on before. 7:10 This man as well, aside from his nose and cheeks. 7:14 So that’s why I think I used too much warm colors in this. 7:19 Leaving as many brush lines as possible, I'll now move to using the brush pen as shown before. Adding the highlight and the environmental light reflected on the skin to the edges here[neck and face]. 7:39 Now, especially for Leyendecker-san, the edges of the shadows, or like here [pointing at the shadow on the eyelid], those places as well as this yellow line I just added on the cheeks, leaving clear brush strokes is important. 7:56 [pointing out the dynamic lines he placed purposefully on the cheeks, chin, and in between them around the corners of the mouth] 8:27 In regards to the hair, not only just painting in the shadows and the highlight but also the reflective light above and below it gives it a glossy sheen which is also important I think. 8:58 Talking about the hand and arms it’s the same process, here for the brightest parts I'm utilizing the underpainting, that’s what Leyendecker often does so I'm taking that into account. Also when painting shadows I’m trying to leave the underlying lines of the hatching visible. 9:21 The clothes again same process, painting lines for the shadows and mid-tones, and lastly for the highlight I'm using the brush pen so basically the whole process I'm using the ‘nikko rull wet’ and brush pen. I'm sure there better brushes out there though. 9:52, In the end, I put lines here and here with the ‘Nikko rull wet’ (pointing to the shirt's ribbon ends) to give it the clean-esque vibe as you see with this man's collar here. conclusion 10:05 ok yes so in this video there's a lot of excess in my drawing it doesn’t have that beauty and elegance that you see in Leyendecker-san’s work. painting process-wise-from the shadow hatching-> paint in the colors. I feel if I held back on the intermediate colors (I'm not sure of the eng word it's colors between warm and cool colors) it would have been better I think. 10:42 Now I've said this before in the previous video but I think the most important part evaluated about Leyendecker's works is what impact it had on American culture as well as designing many magazine covers for merchandise during the rise of posters. So this kind of illustration style is like a bonus. So yeah if you want please get this art book or just look at his art and absorb the knowledge ( 11:47: I think this person's speedpaint would come in handy to study as well as many other videos that are already there about Leyendecker-san’s art so please check them out.
Hi for the english speakers I will try to translate some stuff for you since I understand japanese a little bit. for the first part he said try to play around with the brush "nikko rull" and check the dynamics and change it to wet mix. and you can play with the grain to your liking (This will then be the background and to do the main colors). the brush he use to color the dark colors is the procreate brush pen.you color it first using the darker colors then lighter then highlighter.
Is there any way to provide english subtitles? This information is of incredible value! This looks to be one of the most thorough and in depth leyendecker style deconstructions.

YOU ARE A GOD!
That's really helps a lot thank you

Cashさん、
