If your sciatica is caused by a herniated disc, or if you can feel the pain down your leg getting worse while getting into a position where you bend your back forward (like the child position in the beginning), STOP doing these positions immediately. If bending forward worsens your sciatica its very plausible that you have a herniated disc, in which case bending forward should be avoided at all costs until the disc has healed (might take a few months to two years, depending on severity) or the herniation has been surgically removed. As to the relieve felt by many after doing yoga or stretching, this is due to the stretch reflex, where stretching will alleviate the pain - but in the case of a herniated disc will worsen the underlying condition. I have personally experienced this - in the early stage of my (then undiagnosed) herniated disc i would do stretches such as these, feeling the pain lessened, and therefore assuming it helped me. However, after some time, my condition had worsened a lot, and stretching would now start to increase the pain. So for anyone who can relate: please dont make the mistake i made, and take care of your back. And of course im not trying to criticise this video, just want to grow some awareness of different types of back pain, and what to do and avoid in different cases.
