I've played it a few times over the last month and I gotta say we never had trouble putting the game away or felt that the bridges were going to be damaged. I actually appreciate the effort of coming out with smaller boxes, it's a good direction.
Unless the American box is smaller, I really don't get the point about it being a tight fit. I have the bridges still constructed and it's absolutely fine.
Played this twice at the retreat and loved it. The first time setup was frustrating because I didn’t see the QR code link for explaining the components at first. Otherwise loved this one, Bamboo, and Red Cathedral.
Exactly. I played this game with people who were trying to get the most optimal turns every time + it was our first time playing it so we spent 3 hours, I was so exhausted by the end of it, never again 😂
Pues yo tengo una copia del juego, que por cierto es uno de los mejores de este año, y con los puentes montados la caja cierra perfectamente, incluyendo además los reglamentos en español e inglés. Será por haber jugado mucho a juegos con poliminos?
@@dimitris3655 good to know they are different enough to merit both, but wanted to know which one would be better to start with. Especially which one plays the best at 2 would be a good factor
@@zivpesso3226 I feel red cathedral plays slightly better at 2, even though I haven’t played White Castle enough with 2 players. But that’s a matter of taste in general. If I have to decide only one, maybe I would go with red cathedral.
Is the size of the box meant to signify the complexity of the game or something….either components or size? It seemed like you felt the small box size was misleading because the game has so much going on. But maybe you were just talking literally about the fit of the components? ‘Parks’ is the same way. It’s beautiful Tetris getting everything put away, and no wasted space. But, when played, the game feels much larger.
I hate boxes that are too big, but even more than that I hate boxes that are too small for the supplied components. That’s a pretty big turn off for me.
Nothing against Wendy, but I find her explanations lacking in information more often than not. It's kind of hard to understand how a turn works or the available actions. If the explanations were a little longer, I think they would be perfect 😌. Hope publishers don't hear your complaints about small boxes because they are great. Many boxes come half full component-wise and take a lot of space on the shelves =(.
As a reminder, our overviews are brief on purpose and do not contain every rule or space explained. I also specifically pride myself in keeping things as short and succinct as possible whithout (hopefully) losing the core of the game flow. I'll keep working at it and find a happy medium. As for this overview specifically, the action spaces are constantly changing because they are cards, so I can't explain all available actions. Also the turn structure is draft a die, place it on an action space (paying or gaining coins), and then take the actions. Hope that helps
If I may try to offer some thoughts, being short is good, but I think it would at the very least be better if stuff that will get talk in discussion would be better explained. Like the fact that dice move after being picked and the fact that it might give a better choice if a bigger number is moved to the low side. The fact that money is usefull and tight or then other ressource, or the other the fact that people only get 9 actions the whole game., turn tracker, there is an influence track ?.. I personally really did not get the fact that there is bonus action when you take action and its still doesnt make sense for me even after you talked about the subject. Of course we know you are not giving a perfect rules teach, and theres is no need to explaine everything that you will talk about but it might be a way to handle the next reviews so people will understand more the reviews @@DTWendy
@@DTWendyI know these videos don't intend to explain every detail, but I often times find myself a little lost with your overviews. I think Tom's overviews generally hit the sweetspot. Just a little bit of extra information would have been better, like a full turn in motion or something like that.
Nice review but I have to say that I wish you stop referring to dollars instead of the game's currency. You could say money or coins if you don't remember the name of the currency.
This isn't a big deal, honestly. I've talked to people all over the world about this, and almost everyone uses their home countries' currency when talking about money in a game. maybe you don't, but most people do.
@@thedicetower I’m glad you said this because I completely agree. Having spent most of my life overseas - with my frame of reference and limited experience the complaint seems like a very western non-issue.
@thedicetower of course it's not a big deal but I honestly think that it kind of spoils the theme of a game. And you re right, many people use the name of their own currency, but it will be nicer if reviewers use the proper name in order to reinforce the theme but also to acknowledge and pay homage at the country's currency. Of course it's just a suggestion and personal preference. 🥰☺️
I played it in a boardgame expo and it has a lot of stuff going on and it is so fun to proc domino effects Never played the garden area but uses courtiers and I made it second place😂
I don't really agree with Tom about the down time. I've played it four multiple times, and there has not really been much downtime. Because unlike Tom says, you CAN plan your move while others are playing. The board state doesn't change much per player, so if you all time think couple of options, you are all fine. For me this has been top 3 games of the year! I'm starting to get used to the fact that no one in the Dice Tower has same taste in games as I do, sad.
Tom, you complained about the down time between turns..... here's a suggestion, pay attention during other player's turns so as to reduce the "roll backs" during your own turn. If you pay attention to what others are doing during their turn, you can constantly adjust your strategy as to reduce the down time of every one else when it's your turn. Just because you're not doing anything physically during some one else's turn doesn't mean that you can't be involved in the game by planning ahead to make your turn as concise and efficient as possible. Sure, the higher the player count the more likely it is that things that you may have been planning to use are no longer available..... so, try to plan ahead by continuing the adjust your strategy, Who knows, you might actually discover something better. And remember, if you can't handle someone else dragging their feet because of "roll backs", then try not to do it yourself. Pay Attention!!
I'm just sayin.... I've played too many games where players complain about "down time" only for them to stare at the game like they were foreigners looking at a McDonald's menu for the first time when it's their turn.
Yet another "positive only" review... With only the people who like that exact type of game reviewing it does not bring anything. With all due respect - I'm very sorry but I sadly feel the value of the DT's reviews is dropping. What were the "constructive" feedbacks here? "box too small", "no theme", "art is meh but the iconography works"...
@@thedicetower I truly meant no disrespect. No game is ever perfect. With your experience playing and reviewing games you surely have more constructive feedback to say about it; otherwise it wouldn't be an "average ~8"

The box size is great! Please more small boxes!!
Would like to see Mike do a solo play through stream of this.
I believe The White Castle is the nickname for Himeji Castle in Japan. It is officially the "White Heron Castle" but called white castle for short.
It is.
The Heron symbol is in the game, i.e influence.

Same here, i even have my cards sleeved. Is it full? Yes. Is that bad? Heck no!!
Yeah everything fit just fine for me too. Hopefully the DT crew is in the minority for this
I have full sleeved cards and fit everything fine with no lid lift. The American version.
I think they added an organizer. Which would impact fit.
