    For as long as it’s been around, The Simpsons has been one of the most beloved television shows in history. While few might envy the family’s lifestyle, there are those who would argue that Homer and Marge’s marriage is the ideal example everyone should aspire to. It makes sense. After all, they’re endlessly supportive of one another, sticking together through the good times and the bad. But if you delve a little deeper, you’ll notice there are dark undercurrents to their relationship. In fact, one of the most enduring staples of the series is Homer jeopardizing his and Marge’s marriage in one way or another.
    Early in the first season, one of Homer’s solutions to fixing his family is taking them all to shock therapy. Marge is stuck with the burden of taking care of Homer and the kids, and even when she does get a break, she realizes she can’t stay away too long without things going wrong. Homer might spend more time at Moe’s Tavern than he does at home with his family. Right from the get-go, neither of their dads approved of their marriage and actively discouraged them from being together. And though Marge disapproves of Homer’s bad behavior, more often than not, she takes a passive approach and allows him to get away with everything. You might even be shocked to learn that Homer and Marge have spent just as much time divorced as they’ve been married.
    As much as we might not want to admit it, it’s possible that Homer and Marge’s marriage is not as wonderful as it first appears.

And Google also asks, did you mean D'OH? So I think the logical conclusion from all this is that it's D'OH, and not DO'H.

    Don't you remember the episode where Homer actually does become a better, more considerate person (after he got his jaw wired shut).
    Apparently, Marge became so 'bored' that she had to go and put herself in danger and make Homer revert to his usual ways.
    I think that's one of my least favourite Simpsons episodes. He's finally realised he needs to be more considerate, and she literally forces him to change back >.

    • @reyniknamyrion3557
      @reyniknamyrion3557 6 років тому +26

      It plays on Marge's own flaws in the marriage and as a character - her controlling and manipulative side and her addiction to dangerous situations (gambling, theft, infidelity). Reckless, irresponsible Homer isn't the only one with some serious issues to work through, and that episode showed it in spades.

    • @AtticusDragon
      @AtticusDragon 5 років тому +2

      I don't remember that one strongly, but your synopsis reminds me of a Southpark episode that seems to have copycatted that narrative. Cartman's mom has him treated by a dog trainer and when he starts acting like the perfect child she realizes she needs someone to depend on her and feels lonely. She ends up spoiling him to revert his behavior, and I found it to be really disheartening/depressing. I found the episode oddly intimate; there's a really profound moment when Cartman confronts the ideology that causes him to be selfish that is quite poignant.

    People keep saying that Homer and Marge aren’t a “shining beacon of what marriage is” , but if you really think about it they are! Because in spite of all the troubles that befall them they always stick together in the end. Good marriages are never perfect, the fact they survive that is what makes them good marriages. I’d say Homer and Marges marriage has survived things that no other marriage would 😂

    This is something I thought of.
    You know how Marge took the gun off Homer in that episode, maybe Marge used that same gun to shoot Mr Burns. It said in 'Who shot Mr Burns prt 2', it was Simpson DNA on the gun that was 'used' to shoot Mr Burns. We have a flashback of Homer touching it when grabbing a lollypop off the ground. When Marge said that when she married Homer, she took his DNA too. Maybe she used the gun (the one she took off homer) to shoot Mr Burns. Chief Wiggum didn't know who it was, and Mr Burns might of assumed it was Maggie because he didn't see Marge, who would of been hiding in the shadows.

  • @chrissiewatkins

    I thought for sure the episode with Mindy Simmons would be mentioned. Homer almost cheated on Marge with her, and it's clear that Mindy is a much better match for him. Homer even imagines a reality where he and his whole family is better off when they split up, and the whole episode implies that Homer and Marge aren't a good match to begin with. I've been curious to see if they will ever revisit her character like they did with Lerlean Lumpkin. I really hope they do!

    Who tf ever thought Homer and Marge had a healthy relationship? Even when I was a kid I knew their marriage wasn't what a marriage should be. They're sweet together but obviously unhealthy. I'm so tried of videos like this saying"they look like they have a good/perfect marriage"

      Yeah, heck in an episode, it's reveiled that Marge was going to break up with him because of his drinking and repulsive behavior(ok the end shows her changing her mind but still)

    Okay so you title it differently than other lists but it is the same list as just about every other list on the Simpsons. Can’t you guys come up with something new?

    • @Anyienk9
      @Anyienk9 6 років тому +4

      Can´t you do the same?

    • @absynthefaerie
      @absynthefaerie 6 років тому +3

      Anyienk9 if you are meaning the fact that I commented they need to stop with copying lists because it’s already been done then that is fine because I am sure many have commented the same.... But you forget one thing, I don’t go through the comments and read them to make sure someone hasn’t already said it, it would be a waist of time. I am not a content creator so I don’t need to know if it’s been done already.
      If you are referring to the fact that I could make a video list to make it original then you are incorrect because I don’t make videos.

    • @absynthefaerie
      @absynthefaerie 6 років тому +6

      Safi Imani I watched it because it is a newly uploaded video and I was expecting to see some new clips supporting their argument in the title. I am actually quite relaxed over it, all I did was state the obvious over the fact that their clips to their video have been being shown for a while now and they could come up with some new ones to show. I mean it isn’t like The Simpsons doesn’t have over 20 seasons of product to go through to support the idea, they don’t have to continue to show the same stuff.

    As for the divorced/remarried/lapsed license/ thing: In most states, almost anyone can perform a marriage. They have to be over 18 or over and in some states NOT a ship captain (people used to get drunk on boat trips and get married, it seems). I have a certificate from the Church of Spiritual Humanism. But I don't need it or to register it. As long as an 'officiant' (and the definition is very broad) and 2 adult witnesses sign marriage paperwork filed with the town or city....it is all legal.

    Think about it for a second, Homer is DEFINITELY depressed. He’s an alcoholic, he has a dead end job, he Mavericks had a mother and his father was awful; I’d be surprised if he weren’t chronically depressed. He actually has tried to vomit suicide once, it’s awful. The I’d be willing to bet that he’s some sorta genius and doesn’t show it because he just can’t muster the effort due to his depression, and knows he’d have to give up alcohol if people knew. Well, if your depressed it have ever had suicidal thoughts or actions the most important thing to do is get help and don’t give up, things will improve by medicine or therapy. I feel like I have to say that due to what I’m talking about, so yeah you should definitely see a therapist and psychiatrist if that is your case. Really most people could benefit from that but due to the ridiculous stigmas about mental health that’s just not what people do. So yeah, to sum it up, go to therapy.
