Love your narration, helpful thoughts, and techniques! I’ve learned so much from this video! I’m so thankful I ran across this video and your website. Thanks and God Bless!
I loved the narration. Rather than just observing a painting being created, I felt I was learning so much by listening to what colors and techniques were being used. Thank you, Susie Thomas
Amazing color blended shading. This composition is attractive to the eye and does create a story . Thank-you for your instructions and expertise in color with highlights definite highlights of warm and cold . The approach with color mixing a wash builds the shapes you have created with an individual likeness and personality in your pumpkins. I am excited to try this approach. Happy Fall 😊to you Rick. I have an urge to give each pumpkin a name! MaryAnne
I liked seeing the basics of three layers of paint. Thanks for showing how to do the wet into wet as you go so it looks like there are many more layers than there needs to be.
Never would have dreamed I could fall in love with pumpkins but you made me do it...I just LOVE this! Thank you so very much Rick for all your generous sharing and wonderful, helpful, teaching. I truly appreciate you from the bottom of my heart!!!
The pattern of highlights make this composition sing. The technique for painting the far background of pumpkins is very effective. As usual, the tutorial is informative & enjoyable.
Ohhhhh, this painting makes my heart happy!! Just got back from Omaha where our family travels far and wide each year to gather at Vala's pumpkin patch. It's gigantic! Kids & grandkids get un-plugged for a weekend of fun, and we all have years of great memories there. This painting is special to me. Thanks for sharing!
I really enjoyed this one and have been toying with the idea of doing a pumpkin painting this past week. Now I think I’m ready. Thank you once again for a great detailed tutorial!
Rick, one of my most favorite subjects are pumpkins and I think they look so easy to paint, but I've attempted a million of times - this is a great tutorial and I think I'll try this myself....thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Rick. Loved the liberal use of masking fluid! The brights are so important. I appreciate the reiteration of color combinations. Very helpful. Great painting to celebrate Fall. We in California will be glad to see the rains come.
Nature will soon be painting beautiful scenes surrounding you. I miss all the amazing colors - I am too far south. However, pumpkins and gourds are here! The crows are here, as well, and carry on the most adorable but loud conversations; they're in the large live oaks across the street. They are hilarious! Thanks for the detailed explanation of the pumpkin painting. I love how you executed the last few brush strokes to sharpen the pumpkins and gourds and added the final stem! It's a beautiful painting!
Hi Rick it’s Julie! Painting in a similar color throughout an entire painting has been challenging to me and the constant reference to warm/cool colors next to each other and value strengthening for shadows/edges has truly turned a lightbulb on for me today!! Sometimes it seems to come together in my head and then translates onto paper and today is one of those times!! You leave no details out in your explanations no matter how simple or obvious it may be. As a relatively new student of watercolor, the generosity and patience with which you teach is truly masterful and I personally am so grateful. When asked how I am learning to w/c my answer is consistently the same, from Rick Surowicz!! 🎨 💚
Thank you Julie ! I appreciate all your comments and great feedback !!! I'm glad this "turned on a lightbulb" for you. I call those my "Milestone moments".
hopewithjulie Julie, you said everything I wanted to say and I also got that lightbulb moment about the warm/cool finally! It registered! Rick is also my favorite watercolor teacher! What seemed maybe simple (painting pumpkins) has taught me more in one video than I learned in the past years of learning to paint with other mediums! Thanks for expressing yourself so well and taking all the words right out of my mouth and thank you Rick for your generosity!
This a great demonstration of the importance of counterchange, which you did repeatedly between one pumpkin and another. It's so easy to make a painting like this flat, especially using a limited palette. The result is superb, thank you Rick.
This looks wonderful - Now I know what I'm doing tonight. I love your tutorials and your instructions. I also really like working with masking fluid (except the smell) so this looks fun to try. Thanks again for sharing and teaching others.
Just wow! To advanced for me and I have no masking fluid. I did a pumpkin piece with watercolor pencils so it's more like an illustration. I may try a smaller one with watercolor using your excellent instruction. May have to use gouache for the white though if I loose the highlights. Thanks Rick.
Simply gorgeous Rick! We will soon celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada and this painting would be a beautiful addition to the feeling of Autumn. So well done. I'm a little behind on watching your videos, so lots of catching up to do. Am very grateful to you for sharing your knowledge and skills.
Thank you Mary ! I hope you have a great Thanksgiving !!! The leaves haven't changed yet, but they are getting ready to here in Northeastern Ohio where I live, and the temperatures are feeling more like fall.
Before jumping into painting the whole cartload, I plan to try some “skills” buildup in the manner you have demonstrated in other subjects. Maybe the application of masking fluid and the various color combinations and a pumpkin or two.
Thank you. As a new painter your tutorials are amazingly informative & I'm learning so much about the art of water color. We don't have local classes to take so I've been youtubing everything and become addicted to your tutorials and technique. Thank you for giving us watercolor wannabes help.
Hi Doug, I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you talking abut where do I add the title in my videos or are you asking about putting titles on the actual painting?

Hi, I love your paintings, could you tell me what the pigment is for the royal blue your using?
Thank you Teresa! It is PB60. Other brands version of PB60 are indanthrene, indanthrone, and delft blue.
Can we get a link to this photo reference

Will you be putting the pattern on your website?
I'll see what I can do.
The reference is posted.

Where do you add the “title” of the painting?
Hi Doug, I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you talking abut where do I add the title in my videos or are you asking about putting titles on the actual painting?
Rick Surowicz Watercolor Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I meant on the painting itself.
Hi Douglas, Myself, I don't put the title on my paintings. I believe those who do write it on the back along with their name and date.
