Things I wouldn't believe if I hadn't seen them with my own eyes. But that's another story. I absolutely loved Erlangen. It was a great city. Best beer I ever had was the Erlanger Pislner. My favorite club was in Nuremberg by "The Wall". It was called "The Green Goose". I had just re-enlisted for 6 years of service in Germany "Guaranteed" but Desert Storm happened and I never went back. Best time of my life was spent in your town. Cheer!
The organizers chose Country Roads and Sweet Caroline on purpose. These are easily the two most popular songs at the Oktoberfest. Literally EVERYONE in Munich and Bavaria knows the words :D

There`s lots of thousends of great festivals, bigger or smaller festive occasions all over Germany over the year. I live in a small town of 12000 people and we have 4 of them/year. Plus, we probably have Millions of country and trucker fans all over Germany. So maybe the only ones where these two songs are not been played would be the Wacken Metal Festival and Heidelberger Frühling lol.... ok maybe the Christmas markets either. And you`re right, HOW they sing. Because they`re fans and enjoy the event, how else can they convey their joy to the guests. Hope you had a good stay here and enjoyed your time.

Our clubs represent our city, our area that gave us and our ancestors prosperity or hardship. Its what they lived for and it is what some of them died for. My uncle was buried to my clubs anthem, it is about the mining people that made my area prosper. But you are right: This passion sometimes comes with feelings deeper than hate. Well Oktoberfest origins in Germany. Country roads is a song everyone knew since ages I would say due to beer tents on Oktoberfest in Munich and all over Germany. Thus it is a bit curious how Americans are so surprised everyone know the lyrics. Both country roads and sweet caroline are pretty common party hits on Volksfeste in Germany. But on the other hand Americans unfortunately don't know that much going on outside of the US 🤷🏽 (no offence, just what I've been told by a couple of American friends moved to Germany). And German fan culture due to football (soccer) games is worldwide known for its stunning vibes inside the stadiums I guess.
There's no reason to feel offended because you're absolutely right and it's kind of you to point it out. Literally every American expat and tourist I've met in Germany told me they were shocked to see the life quality that Germany has.

First of all: Country Roads is a song, everybody in Germany can perform. Its almost mandatory. Second: They are all not leaving because they know how terrible it is to come out of the underground garage at Allianz Arena^^
The American army brought the songs over to Germany (Bavaria was the American sector after WW II) so everyone knows them. Why exactly these songs remained that popular remains a mystery though ...😃.
Me, I'm originally from the Jersey Shore who arrived in Bavaria back in 93' thru the US Army and still here due to me helping raising 3 kids with my German wife. So very true that the US Army bought these songs over and many more. Listen to the chants from Borussia Dortmund, the entrance chant/song before the game begins. You'll never walk alone! I still remember watching Live Aid 85' Queen with my older brother. The European or South American crowds singing/chants before, during or after the game blows us away! A great atmosphere experience that I've seen many times over the years at soccer games, American Football games in Frankfurt or small village games, rock concerts or at Volksfests across this great country.

The chiefs fans do tomahawk chop with their arms (some say it’s racist), Steelers fan spin a yellow towel over their heads (called terrible towel), redskins fans (commanders) will sing their hail to the redskins song, and eagles fans will start violence because they are criminals
