I rented one of these on a trip to L.A years ago. It was a blast driving that big new Caddy along the L.A freeway system. Cadillac was losing its identity back then. Since that time, it's almost indistinguishable from every other car that's out there. Not the special driving machine it once was. It seems like everything else has caught up to it in terms of luxury and technology.
Northstar is a magnificent engine but somehow I hear mixed reviews on it. Some people absolutely love it, some absolutely hate it. Remember cash for clunkers? I worked at a dealership during that time and people brought in all kinds of gas guzzlers including a Cadillac STS with a Northstar V8 in it. We had to drain the oil on all the cars and pour a seizing agent in and start it up. Out of all the engines we had to destroy, that Northstar took the longest by far to finally stop running. It ran for a good 5 minutes on seizing compound while all the other cars didn't last a minute before locking up.
Just picked up another Cadillac. 1997 Cadillac D'Dlegance White Diamond pretty much the same car with 82.500 miles. Price tag was very good I Couldn't pass on it. 1.450 The car was passed on to the grandson from his grandfather. The young boy wanted a truck and I was very happy to help him get it and I was tickled pink. I've never seen a Cadillac with mud inside on the driver floormat until I bought this D'elegance. It came from the young boys boots. It did clean up. I wouldn't take 4.500 for it. Has lots of life left in it. You hear bad noise about the 4.6 Lotus designed Northstar. If you drive a Cadillac 4.6 Liter or any car be prepared to know the engine and do routine maintenance on it. It's the life of any engine.
Add to that coolant leaks and the rear main seal blowing. None are cheap repairs and are a pain in the ass to do due to the FWD layout. On top of that GM develops this wonderfully powerful engine but sends the power and torque to the front wheels and kept a shitty 4 speed transmission long after other manufacturers had cars with 5 and 6 speeds. I wish these old Devilles were RWD, the powerful Northstar was reliable and it had a 5 speed auto. Would be a dream car.
Seems rare for people to know what you know about these old Northstar cadillacs. I had one 1998 model, well maintained by an old person and at the dealership, and the headgasket blew when i got it, it had 199,000 miles on it and blew like clockwork. Antifreeze would get everywhere, and fry my starter, my waterpump, my alternator, my oxygen sensors, it was a nightmare. Left me walking a lot towards the end. But the first hundred miles were the best. Ran like a dream, crazy fast, great handling and good gas mileage on top of that. Loved the looks of these things, but like you said wish they didnt cram a V8 in a front wheel drive configuration and wish the northstar wasnt a time bomb.
I don't know why you're so upset about the front wheel drive V8 configuration, when the Cadillac Eldorado was pure FWD V8 from 1967 until it's fateful demise after 2002. Also, the Deville was FWD from 1985-2011. RWD doesn't matter much in a full-size luxury car like this, as RWD is only noticeable for sporty cars.
