Pronunciation and the Ragas they follow, Hindustani classical follows a different set of Ragas whereas Carnatic music has their own way. North Indian music has been influenced by Persian classical whereas South Indian was not influenced by any invasions.
Very true, also if I might add, the compositions in Hindustani are mostly in Awadhi and Brajbhasha, rarely in Khariboli,...... never have I heard a single Sanskrit composition in Hindustani. In the Carnatic tradition, while of course there are loads of compositions in the four primary southern languages, Sanskrit compositions are very very popular, perhaps to do with the fact that an overwhelming majority of the composers down south were Brahmins, or influenced by Brahmins, and hence the role of Sanskrit was always felt, so much so that, even when there were compositions in Telugu and Kannada, many of them have the pronunciations which are very heavily Sanskritised, not with any ulterior motive, but only because the composers were speaking the southern languages with a decidedly Sanskrit accent and lilt. They couldn't help it you see, for Brahmins, Sanskrit is always the first language taught in the gurukul. This is not to say that there were no important non brahmin composers, of course there were loads of them, but the Brahminical influence on Carnatic music is very strong. Ironical, that for a language that was essentially an 'import' into the South from beyond the Vindhyas, it exists in its purest pronunciation only in the South. The pundits up north chop up the word endings and swallow the 'halanta' when it should be used, or use it where it is unnecessary....for example 'Naaraayana', is always 'Naaraayan' in the North. the Rishabha which is 'Ri' in Carnatic becomes 'Re' in Hindustani, another prime example of how pronunciations are much more uninfluenced in Carnatic.
