Me too. This track is the introduction of the Peart ride cymbal pattern, which you hear in what I guess would be called the chorus. This pattern is repeated 4 times- twice at the beginning (starting at 2:25) and twice toward the end (starting at 8:38). The nuance I noticed here is that there are actually 2 variations- one includes single bass drum hits and the other has doubles. The first time you hear the pattern it's with doubles, then the next time is with singles. It's not easy to hear this without the isolated track because the bass drum gets sort of buried in the mix..
THIS track is why most drummers cannot measure up to The Professor. Aside from skill and technique, there was some mind bending forethought to the composition and fluidity across the entire 9:42 minutes. He makes drumming seem so easy...especially the parts after 5:00 SO damn proficient! AND Neil was only 25/26 years old at the time!!
This track proves to me (and I had my suspicions) that when someone says they can play La Villa on drums, they aren't really playing La Villa on drums.

This song was like the zenith of Rush's musicianship. But the thing with Neil has always been technically perfect, right up until R40. He is ALWAYS on top of his game.
I could listen to Neil's isolated drums all day long...it really gives more understanding to the perfection and always trying to improve...the guy worked so hard at everything in his life...so determined......I'm glad the technology is available for stuff like this....Just amazing....
You're so spot on with that. Being a guitarist, I'm hum'n every guitar part. I was obsessed with this song as a teenager and remember woodsheading the hell outta this for days and hours learning how to play it correctly by ear way before tabs and music books...

You can hear the Phil Collins' Genesis influence in his drumming on this song. Rush was very into Genesis around this time.
I agree, you can especially hear influence in Neil’s ride bell pattern, it’s similar to the patter in “It” by Genesis
