Today we’re learning French with the French president Emmanuel Macron. This is a great opportunity to become familiar with a more formal speaking register, so that you can feel at home with any level of French.
In this clip, Macron is speaking to the French people in the aftermath of the fire that nearly destroyed the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris in 2019.
First you’ll watch the whole video with subtitles. Then we’ll break down the most challenging words and expressions, and finally, you’ll watch the video again without subtitles to test your knowledge.

Macron vraiment un très mauvais comédien mais bon communicant pour la tromperie généralisée.
NOOOOO! Never!! Don't listen to Macron: he speaks such a poor French! He's a total counter example (Sarkozy and Hollande were even worse, if possible). Listen to Mitterrand instead: he's the last president who spoke decent (indeed, elegant) French. No politics involved, c'est juste une question de qualité de la langue.
Le président Macron est de gauche et cite donc « les parisiennes et les Parisiens ». Toute personne normale sait que ce n’est pas nécessaire ; Cependant, depuis quelque temps, ces politiciens de gauche sont devenus aussi idiots.
