I live In New Zealand, im very sure these long length trailers would be safe to drive on so Many certain highway routes. Shouldnt be a problem. Yea they might slow down a lot while climbing due to extra weight.. 😅
What was the gross weight of the first Kenworth pulling two trailers at the start of the video? The Kiwis put us Aussies to shame when it comes to log trucks👍👍👍👍👍
That was a Willy Willly (a.k.a Dave Williams & Warwick Wilshire) C509 KW loaded with short stems with roughly a net weight of 120 tons. Those doubles can haul 150 tons of export logs.
Great catch there thanks Will. Some seriously large loads with tyre distortion fascinating to watch. That sequence @ 17:40 was a good pick-up too. Not seen that before :-)
Spent alot of time around these massive rigs n kaingaroa my uncle use2 run crews out there and use2 take me to work az a kid with him now my cuzzy drives there massive rigs
@@liambishop5224 Cummins 550 egr motor I believe, self loaders still has one in r Smith colors that I pedaled for a couple months, actually looking at the video again and the number plate, that was the truck I was driving, it doesn't get used as much now but still hauls logs
I think this is in the Kaingaroa Forest, mid North Island NZ if I’m not mistaken. These trucks are running on private roads within the forest so I don’t think weight limits apply and they don’t piggy back the trailers. Correct me someone if I’m wrong here! I drove on some those roads in the 70’s in a MK 1 escort in car rallies. One rally was particularly tricky as it rained just before the event and most of the top seeded cars crashed out due to the greasy roads from oil and diesel spills from the trucks. The first time I crashed off the road and hit a tree as the car rolled and the second time we were leading the 1301-1600 class and had an engine failure on the very last stage. Great memories from those days though.
@@derekfromtauranga6012 hi mate i was on loggers in Kroa a few years ago, hiway truck 4 axle trailer pulling off highway loads, thinnings (for pulp) around 54t, logs up to 67t. Thats a man made forest Anna it use to be the biggest man made pine Forrest in the world. My dad use to chop the trees down in that forrest in the late 60s and early 70s.
Cabover Pete with a refer on and a Jimmy hauling hogs we were heading bear on I 1.0 bought mile out shaky town I said pigpen this here the rubber duck and I'm bought put the hammer down
None the less, these are highway tractors suited for off-road applications, not off-highway logging trucks. Here on the west coast of Canada, we use Pacific tractors. They’re much larger than your New Zealand trucks.
@@LibertyOrD___h If you look back at our logging history we have had Pacific trucks here for decades there is still a few working around the place all off road. If they were still being made no doubt we would still see loads of them here they were very popular, they not as big as your massive ones though. The off road ones here can weigh up to around the 90-120 ton all up all heavy spec well built, cheers
These logging trucks are the best in the world and the men work there asses off to do a quality job. Not an easy life working vehicles an loaders and chainsaws but the men have years of experience and a quota to meet of a day. Seen the work daily growing up in the area of Taupo carting logs on these stretches of road. Around the back blocks they end up on the main roads so just all have respect for these mighty machines. Brilliant video. Keep on trucking.
Carl Thomas, the Chinese do not drive on the same side of the road as we do here in New Zealand. The Japanese do, as do the British, Australians and South Africans.
I think you are right to be concerned about the destruction of old growth and virgin forests. What you see here is Pinus Radiata from production forests that do a rotation in about 24 years. They grow extremely fast, and like weeds if unchecked. That being said, while New Zealand has woken up to the value of leaving native timber standing, it wasn't always the case. It would be all gone if some people had their way.
used to live in Kaingaroa as a kid in the 70's. Watching trucks was a great past time.
Back in the days of KLC logging with their Pacific trucks and 6 trailers. When the village actually existed
Big boys 25 minutes of burning brakes and diesel fumes one of your best videos yet Will Bishop Congrats

Nice video...there are so many Kenworth.
Very interesting video 👍🏻 these rigs are a lot bigger than the ones we have in Germany
Love the long loggers there,if those Western Stars were hauling here in B.C.,no one would give them a second glance, almost the same setups
Long and double short stem units, what a site. Selfloaders, fiber bin units. Busy hive in the days. KPP.
Brilliant Will.

Used to be treble units, they were freaking massive. Now only doubles remaining
trebles , we logged in the 60's out of Murapara, still I'm three times your age' maybe 4
Interested to know how those oversized units carrying the stems get unloaded .
