    Good morning Worm Dad 🪱
    Nice job. I have noticed that if my Can-O-Worms gets rather warm I see a few up in the lid. I like to make fruit and coffee grounds Popsicles and that keeps them happy.
    I've been keeping worms 🪱 since 2009 and the bin is just off my kitchen. I guess we (me & 🪱🪱)
    have found our rhythm 🎶
    Nice video 👩‍🌾👍🪱

    I killed accidently a whole bin due to compaction. The worms didn't have a chance. Learned my lesson quickly.

      Happen to me when I first started I thought I could just jam six months worth of food in the bin and it would be fine. Live and learn man!

    I’m new to vermicomposting. I started just 4 months ago with 250 red wrigglers in a tote with air-holes. They’ve been doing great. Just an occasional one on the top sides. Tonight I went to feed them snd they were everywhere trying to escape, it might be too moist or warm but I can think of anything I’ve done differently.

      Hi Jackie and thanks for your comment, sorry to hear you are having issues with your bin. Only time I seem to have issues like yours is when I feed my worms too much at once, the bin goes sour and the worms make a break for it. Even when my lower bins have been more moist is still don't really have them trying to get out. If you could fill us in with some more details like feeding, and your bin maintenance i it someone else may be able to help more. Thanks for watching!😉

      @@TheWormWhisperer it was an odd one time thing. Next time I checked it, they were fine. Yesterday, I took it outside and went through it, nothing seemed off. Temp and moisture 👍. Happy worms with a whole ball thriving inside a toilet paper tube I put in there. 🥰

    Nice information , thanks for sharing. I have a can o worm bin , it works nicely , I saw your square worm bin, what’s the brand of it ? Another question is , is it true that if you feed with cornmeal to your worms they could have a kind of indigestion and destroy its guts? In a long term of usage? Thanks in advance.

    • @TheWormWhisperer
      @TheWormWhisperer  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you! The brand in the video that I use is a Hot Frog Worm bin. I have a video doing a review of the bin pretty helpful if you would like to check it out! I believe that corn meal could cause protein poisoning. I could be wrong though, maybe someone could help out with this question.

    New bin here... I have like 30-50 trying to escape. Do you open the bin to light to have them settle? or do you put a light on inside?

    • @TheWormWhisperer
      @TheWormWhisperer  Рік тому

      Hi Floki thank you for visiting my channel! I would take the top off and put the light directly over them for a few days. The best thing though is to figure out what the issues is that is causing them to try to escape. If they are still trying to get out best to test for PH, and make sure the moisture content is correct.

    • @FlokiCrypto
      @FlokiCrypto Рік тому

      I did that for 24 hours. They were back in the ground within 15 minutes. But when I closed the lid again, the very next day there were small clumps of worms at the top of the sides... not a huge amount considering I have 2lbs of worms in there.
      Im still a bit concerned the conditions aren't right. Humidity is 85-90%, but there is not liquid anywhere... I'm going to test the PH next to make sure I didn't offset that...
      Any other suggestions ? This is a new tub btw. Less than 2 weeks old.

    HI what video of yours would you suggest that I use in order to know how to put half of my worm farm into a new container please. Do I just set them up with new bedding ie cardboard and coir and place them in there? I have had the three level worm farm for a few months and it is getting overcrowded. Also i will be going on holiday for five weeks. As long as I put some food and bedding in will they be ok? Many thanks.

    I have a mixed bin of red wrigglers and euro night crawlers (about a 55/45 ratio) and it’s only the night crawlers are the ones hanging around on the sides of the bin only a little like 7 or 8

    • @TheWormWhisperer

      I always have a few "hangers-on" in my bins when I go to harvest around the edges of the bin. No matter how long I leave the bin without food, I just pick them out and they get moved, wether they like it or not lol. Most do move up though using the methods in the migration video. Thanks for sharing!

    I use a single burlap piece at the bottom covering the holes and a double layer of moist burlap. They crawl through the holes in the burlap. They seem to like hanging out in the corners where it is cooler. Never had one go up or down.

    If you have enough bacteria for your worms to eat , you don’t need a light. You’re actually using light to force them back in to the bedding that doesn’t have enough food for them to eat. Once Bacteria grows After a few days to a week , there’s no need for the worm to try to leave. I hope that make sense.

    One reason I've found that could cause worms to want to get out of the bin is that the pH level is to high. So after feeding and/or fluffing I sprinkle a small amount of dolomite around the perimeter of the bin as it deters escapees and eventually gets mixed in to the whole bin. The dolomite helps to neutralises the bin's pH as food added over time raises the pH causing the acidity level to rise.

    • @stevekeats6652
      @stevekeats6652 2 роки тому +1

      @@TheWormWhisperer yes powdered type, also I believe that as it gets dispersed it becomes another form of grit for the worms as well as a source of extra calcium and magnesium

    Every morning, we came downstairs and found 4 or 5 worms had got out. We found that when we left an LED under-cupboard strip light on in the kitchen overnight no worms got out.. The bin didn't need to be on the counter directly under the light (thank goodness) just on the floor near the cupboard and the light wasn't that bright. They use very little electric. My question is obvious. The small led lights produce little heat and are too far from the worms to make a temperature difference: worms have no eyes AFAIK so how the heck did that work????

    • @TheWormWhisperer
      @TheWormWhisperer  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Evelyn thank you for visiting the channel! I'm sorry to hear your worms are making a break for it. 🤔 Worms are very sensitive to light from an source they really dislike it. I would try to keep the led over then it you can. Good luck I hope they don't keep trying to get loose ugh!😉

  • @victorm7274
    @victorm7274 Рік тому +2

    1:45 not actually true. Worms are not getting use to your bin. A new bin will not have the bacteria that the worm eat. So it takes about a few day to a week for the bacteria to grow. Once there’s enough bacteria for the worms to eat they won’t attempt to leave.

    so iv started to worm farm and the first one i started was so half ass and just threw any worm in a old cat litter box and would throw dog poop in it and sometimes food and then i got more in to it and started another one and eventually was full on in to it and went to the first one i started with the litter box and it had only redwigglers that survived all my horible torment and from that box i now have them in a huge tote and they all started from that very first half ass attemtp to worm farm and have grown to thousands now

    if only the edge of the bin can be slapped with salt tape (if it existed)
    so i dont need to closed it for good airflow and they wont escape because barometer

      @@TheWormWhisperer for now its works good (3 days). for my ANC and red wiggler
      the problem is condensation that will melt the salt to droplet.
      for now only 2-3 cm of tape that become droplet other side of the tape only contain water vapor that will dry again.
      i only re apply a little salt to 2-3 cm side.
      use fine salt and strain,shake,pull the tape to drop excess salt before applying to the bin wall, the result will be like salt on your frenchfries
