I was married for over 30 years to my wife from South Korea. We lived in the UK for over 22 years and raised two daughters. So why have I ended up living alone in Bangkok at 62? This upload explains all.

Very nice video Peter. I moved to Krabi in December 2007, when I was 51 1/2 years old.
No income from Denmark for more than 15 years. I worked hard in Denmark with a lot of overtime. Sold everything I had in Denmark. Moved to Krabi with my wife with a good bank account. Bough a oilpalmplantation , new house, new car and was able to pay cash because my wife could pay 50% of everything.
Now I am almost 67 and will get a pension from Denmark in 2 month. May wife is 47. Educated on university in Phuket in Community Development and business Hotel. Now she has been a Government Official for almost 6 years with a good income.
I met her when she was a hotel manager in 2003.
She is from a wealthy family who owns a lot of oilpalmplantations. 7 out of 8 children have been to university. They all have much more money than me, so never ask for money. My best advice to foreigners here is to stay far away from bargirls unless you want to be a sponsor 🏧 for her and her poor family in Issan. My wife lived 3 1/2 years in Denmark.
Left her good job and her family, for me.
It will normally take a long time to find a decent well educated women with a good job, but it's worth it.
This would have to be one of the most honest, humble, raw, videos I have ever watched in I don't know when... Thank you Peter for opening up to your loyal viewers. We all support you and wish you all the very best in the future. You have friends all over the world...
Brenton, your words could have been written by me. Exactly my sentiments too.
Well said. Congrats Peter! 👍
I am 63 , retired , have my own condo and new vehicle , cost of living is cheap in bangkok , I haven’t really calculated how much I spend but my monthly expenses are under a $1000 Canadian a month . I don’t drink , I don’t smoke but I am a foodie and manage my money well
Go to Thailand then, you too can be one of the hordes of sad pensioners sitting drinking alone in the bars there.
I liked listening to your story, I'm 36 now and one of the things I do not regret and never will is not having kids, my freedom is important to me and I cherish it daily, would not imagine getting involved in all that family drama I hear from everyone, not for me.
Man that is sad. As you get older - hopefully you'll gain some tiny fraction of wisdom.
Your life is very similar to mine. I've been here in Thailand for more than 20 years now. Left the U.S. to find a teaching job in Japan. Didn't have luck there, so I moved to Seoul, S. Korea. Worked there for two years, had a vacation in Thailand. Fell in love with Thailand and moved over here. Went back to the U.S. in 2015 after living here for about 15 years, stayed for 3 years in the U.S. and hated every minute of it, so I came back to this wonderful place.
The west has become to rich it is all about easy and no problem the young sit behind computers snd never interact with customers have no idea how to fix repair the things they use
I am 72 years old and I have a 44 year old Thai woman. I met her just walking around in different areas in Thailand. I'm not into online dating. Most have ulterior motives that could be a very bad thing for you. Just come to Thailand and enjoy being single. You might met someone who's very special in your life. I did. Be back in Sept,,,,,,,,,,,
I hope you don't get a call saying my buffalo is sick 😅
It doesn't matter where u meet them. All the motives are the same
Funny well as a 40 something guy it would take a lot of money to be with a 70+ sugar momma
@@dusty_muff hell yeah €£¥$
You are lucky. Tks for sharing
What a great upload, Peter. Really enjoyed it! Thank you.
I have been going to Thailand since 1996 and for about 22 years on. I got very bored at the end. I am a handyman, and I need to 'fix' stuff. I realised that living in a guest house or hotel did nothing for me to 'do'. I really missed my projects. I am into RC flying. But bringing a RC aircraft is not an option. I am into all kinds of building whatever from scratch. And I would love to show thai people. But I can't bring all my 'crap'. 55555.
So I am in Denmark. But not happy. I am like you. I have been away for to long. Friends are gone, and I don't mind. But bottom line is that I miss Thailand, and Asia. I just need something to keep me busy if I go there again. It's not enough to hang in bars and bang chicks, not in the long run anyway.
Excellent upload!
I’ve been to Thai six times in the last year and a half. I also plan on moving there. The traffic is hell so I just get a scooter taxi or a car taxi for long drives it’s very cheap and hassle free. Definitely won’t drive in Bangkok. I’m from the USA but I fell more free in Thailand 🇹🇭. And the women are the most beautiful in the world in my opinion. But if you are looking for a long term girlfriend don’t get one at a bar or tourist area they will burn you. Find one with a regular job. I got one that works for the government in the highway department she is the most loving person I have ever met
Hi Peter, this is probably your best video yet in my opinion, very interesting and informative. I wouldn't worry about going on too much, I'm sure many viewers like all the detail and a longer video like this is better, I put it on in the background whilst I get on with some computer work! You're very honest with both us and yourself, admit your flaws and as somebody a 25 years younger is invaluable knowledge to take on board to make the right choices especially as somebody who definitely wants to live in Thailand some time!
After watching your videos the past couple of years I always thought why isn't he in Thailand full time. I think you made the right decision and wish you many years of happiness ahead!
ONLY THAT MAN IS FREE, THAT IS IN CONTROL OVER HIMSELF
I am happy, that you didn't loose yours. Thank you very much for telling us about your history, brave big man. Enjoy Bangkok!
Cheers from Berlin
I like that you said "if you can afford it", many vloggers tend to omit that one very important fact. This is hands down your best video of all time.
Rent in Hua Hin, Thailand for a basic one bed condo for a month's stay 6000 baht (£150) - includes a swimming pool. Eat local foods at local eateries. Around 80 Baht (£2) per meal. Tins of lager 50 Baht each (£1.10). "If you cannot afford" this then stay where you are.
@@stevenhull5025 This is not about me personally, if you want to know about me, I actually spend in one 2 weeks millionaire trip, what some expats live off as a yearly budget. However, I have personally seen, and we all heard off, that one person that attempts to retire and live in Thailand on a thousand or less USD, that's called barely existing budget, and would be adventurers need to hear some truth and heed Peter's advices in this Vlog.
What a honest, candid and personal story. Admirable that you not only mention the good emotions (love for the country), but also the bad that preceded your move.
Watched you since you started! I’m probably younger than your average viewer (32) but your advice and experience is invaluable to all. You gave me the Thailand idea a few years ago, I’d never been to Asia before. I went to Pattaya for a month after my relationship broke down (seems to be a pattern? 😂) for the first time in March and loved it. Now I’m focused on ditching the west and moving out there at the end of this year. Thanks mate!
Fantastic video Peter, been watching your channel for a long time and for the first time, I feel like I understand your story.
Thanks for being so open and honest Peter and its great to hear about your background. As im turning 40 in June i think itll be another 20 years before i will be able to retire in Thailand and things could be very different by then. Its great to see you living the dream though mate, and i hope i can buy you a beer or give you 100 baht towards your lunch someday! 😉🙌
Thats if the world is still able to support life in the next 20 years.
Steven, yes too many people on earth, lets get rid of half to start with, lets start with the
democrats,
Peter, this is the best "story"that you have told or read. I have watched all the videos with you reading out other people's stories. This one trumps them all. This is you putting your heart on your sleeve and pouring your gutts our to your viewers. Very heart felt and I wish nothing but the best for you. God's speed my friend.
I'm one of those guys that pointed at the map and came here... Hahaha. I've been living here almost 2 years. I lived in Jomtien, Bangkok, and Phuket and I mostly loved the easy access to excellent small western restaurants in the Pattaya area. Cheaper cost of living opposed to Bangkok and I happen to drink very little which accounts for most of the money spent here it seems that and women. Thanks for sharing and I'm happy you recovered and are happy from the 30 year marriage. Best of luck and enjoy your new life...
Why live in a foreign country and eat western foods which are bad for you anyway. Surely local foods are cheaper and healthier. Not many obese Thais walking around compared to westerners.
Thanks for sharing your story, very heartfelt and down to earth
Met the love of my life 47 years ago on one of the Sois off Sukhumvit. Followed her to the travel agency she worked in. Wouldn't have lunch with me for a couple of months and finally agreed after her sister checked me out. We were married 6 months later. In 1980 we built a western style house in Pak Ret just northwest of Bangkok. We visit here every couple of years and stay for about 3 months. The rest of the time we are in our home in Florida. In fact we are here in Pak Ret now and will be until June 27th. Peter gives some excellent advice. One, however, does not need a great deal of money or income to live here. Condominiums rent for 5,000 baht per month and up. That's a about $146. Of course better ones start at about 10,000 baht and up. Food is dirt cheap as is transportation. The night life is the most costly thing and medical, although, basically cheap, can add up if your are sickly. Have medical insurance and limit your nightlife and you can live in Thailand very inexpensively.
Good video Peter, your honesty is commendable
Lovely account. Very kind of you to share. May you have Luck and Happiness in future.😊
Thank you Peter for sharing your very personal story. I wish you all the best in this new and exciting phase in your life and hope to move myself in the not so distant future.
I'm going through the lawyer stuff now , she hates don't know why .. l trying for 50/50 custody 2 kids l married a Vietnamese girl after she got her citizenship and that's when the big change came .. l try to look at the positive my 2 beautiful children and that makes all worth fighting for ..
Mate Anthony from Australia. I just finished watching your video and rewound it a few times to take some notes. Incredibly helpful and honest - as always. I'm arriving in Pattaya on June 2 and then onto BKK June 14 for a month. I appreciate you prefer not to meet blokes in person for a consult but if you'd consider it let me know - otherwise I'll be in touch for a video chat after I've had a look around. I've been a few times and I've decided it's time to get serious about the move. Great to see you fit and well. I'll be in touch mate. Very very grateful 🙏👍
Hi Peter, your life story almost mimics mine.
I've lived in Pattaya for eight years after a 40 year UK marriage. Think of it as this is OUR time, not being a son, husband or father. Don't let trolls etc put you off, there's nothing wrong with P4P.
Enjoy those final years.
By the way I enjoy your videos.
Brilliant video Peter. I very much enjoyed the story and your candor on the matter. I am also divorced after a 30+ year marriage and unfortunately it didn't go as smoothly as yours despite my efforts to make it so. I hope you find yourself happy and fulfilled in Thailand at this point in your life. I've told you this before... you are a wonderful storyteller.
A very enlightening and informative video Peter. I'm sure many of your viewers will have benefited from your honest and up front views and experiences. And I for one congratulate you for 'seizing the day' whilst doing it in a civilised way that doesn't burn bridges with your family.
I spotted you (or your doppelgänger) yesterday afternoon (Fri 5pm) riding a scooter down Soi 11 - you were looking very relaxed and cheerful. Happy days in Thailand!
Yep that was me
@@ThailandBound Keep your eyes on the road in Soi 11. That soi is crazy at night. But I love walking along and enjoying the atmosphere.
Peter, As the sticker on my car advocates........... "ONE LIFE - LIVE IT".
I wish you every success.
Great story and great storytelling as always!! can't get tired of your videos!
Thank you, that was an interesting story Peter. The laser eye surgery won't really solve your eyesight problems. If it fixes your shortsightedness it will worsen your longsightedness. It's age related. My opinion...just use graduated lenses and forget about the surgery, which doesn't come with zero risk.
Very interesting, informative and helpful video , possibly the best video you have ever done.Thank you Peter for sharing your life journey in a open and honest way.Wishing you a successful and happy new life in Thailand.
Hi Peter, really interesting to hear your story in greater detail and appreciate your honesty! I would say this upload was probably one of my favourites 😊
Just found your channel through Archie Luxury mentioning it. Well done Peter, I subbed.
I just went off and watch that video I had no idea cheers
as a 30 yrs old i really appreciate you sharing your life experience.. watched the entire video.
Thank you for the detailed explanation, always wondered the reason so many farangs retire to Thailand. Wish your daughters a wonderful trip !
Hi Peter, i enjoyed the video while sitting alone in my one bedroom flat in the UK 😄
It sure has made me consider my own situation. Thanks, Peter.
😂
What a great look into many aspects of your life . Real honest take on it.
I'm really happy that you've done what you've set out and are living life your way.
Moved here from US 3 months ago. I am learning every day something new here in Pattaya. It is way cheaper to live here and glad I made this move while young enough(62) to still enjoy what this place offers. You have a lot of good advice! Keep it up!
Excellent video, love listening to your viewers stories but this is your best video so far, getting to see your journey was fascinating.
Amazing to hear your story Pete. I’m only mid 30s but can relate to so much of what you say. The drinking, the relationship stuff and the parenting bit. All the best mate. Glad to see you’ve found your happy place now!
This video was outstanding. Brilliant advice. The consultancy service sounds worthwhile too, and very good value for money. A very reasonable price.
Wow an open and honest point of view. I had the horrible divorce. Lost the contact with the daughters poisoned by the ex wife. Well done for keeping good relations between all of you.
I’ve followed you for a long time telling your stories. Welcome to Thailand, I’ve lived here for over 10 years now and love it, returned to the U.K. for 9 weeks and could not wait to get back.
Ok enough Enjoy your new Life and may you get more than 20 years.
Best wishes Les.
Just a note on Prescription for medication. If it is string medication even the Hospital won’t give you these without 1st seeing a Thai Doctor, once he gives you this then yes you can get it over the counter.
Interesting video.
Hey Peter
Great video. I made a HUGE MISTAKE
I came into Thailand on January 3, 2023 on a 45 day visa. I extended it for 30 days then I did 2 boarder runs to Cambodia. Then I flew out to Malaysia. Came back expecting a 30 day visa stamp and was rejected and deported. My intention was to get a 15 month retirement visa but my mistake was taking advice from an agency that was wrong. If you max out your extentions and boarder runs, thai immigration frowns on that. Imagine this, I just brought a back pack with me to Malaysia leaving all of the rest of my stuff at my Hostel in Jomtien. So I'm currently stuck in Malaysia and have no answer as to when I can return to Thailand. Please share with your subscribers that DO NOT ENTER AND EXIT THAILAND MORE THAN 3 TIMES because you will be DEPORTED. I didn't overstay, I was allowed 180 days on a tourist visa but what the agency failed to tell me was that if you re-enter more than 3 times, you will get deported and they do not tell you when you can come back
I'll read this coming out on next week's live stream
Hi Peter
I flew to Laos (Thai Embassy)from Malaysia and was granted a 60 days Tourist visa. I'm back in Thailand and this time I'm going for a retirement visa straight away
Thanks for reading my story. I certainly hope this doesn't happen to anyone who doesn't deserve that. It is embarrassing and humiliating. Almost made me feel like some sort of criminal.
thank you for an honest and vulnerable clip !
Thank you so much Peter. This is the video I had been waiting for.
Enjoyed watching your video! Thanks for sharing!
Seeing Thailand was always on my bucket list. I was lucky to pull off a trip just before Covid hit. I totally agree with Peter and all here who love the Thai people.
17K views, 1.3K likes and 450 comments just show how much your viewers engaged in this post, I really appreciated it. I bet you could write another book about all the things you must have seen during you career as a hotelier in Asia in the 90's and your wife must have really loved you to follow you all over the world. Thanks for the video Peter, best wishes in BKK and counting down now until 50K subs ...
Slick video..
Look forward to hearing more of your life story's you've certainly been about✌️
This video is extremely helpful in more ways than one thank you and congratulations
Great video. Really appreciate the consultant option.
Thank you for sharing your story Peter - great advice on every level!
Amazing life story, mate. Really appreciate you sharing this. I did not even realize it was a 50+ minutes video until it ended 😂
Tremendous video, authentic and informative, practical and you are a genuinely good human being , well done , you have been very engaging and all of it is appreciated.
This was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. A lot of stuff resonated with me. My place is up for sale.
I came across one of your earlier videos Peter, when you were in Bangkok just after the pandemic. I enjoyed it so i subscribed, and really liked this one as I’d considered doing something similar. I’ve been coming to Thailand since 1986, then married a bar girl (bit mad but heart in the right place. Her, not me!) in 2002.She came to the UK with me on a six month ‘fiancé visa, fell pregnant, we got married. It didn’t last long as we were very different people culturally, and pretty much the only thing we had in common was our daughter. She stayed in the UK and got a council house, and thankfully didn’t rinse me in the divorce, and to this day we still see each other regularly and remain on good terms. I have no regrets as I have a beautiful daughter (now 19). Nobody knows what’s around the corner and I’m feeling the same as you were, like it’s Groundhog Day, going through the motions but not living my best life. I’m 58, also with a rental property in the UK, plus a private pension, so I’d say maybe another year and I could jack in the job and bugger off to Thailand to live.
I really appreciate your honesty, telling it like it is and admitting you didn’t act perfectly, and I look forward to seeing future video updates. Thank you!
Duncan, Surrey
Probably never see Thailand but thank you for the last couple of years of UA-cam videos.
Appreciated.
A very good and interesting video Peter.
Thank You.
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to your life story.
Peter your best video to date and it will help many people thanks for sharing
Thank you for posting such an emotional and personal experience, glad to see that you handled it like adults. Great outcome for all.
Great Video. I followed you since covid days sitting back in Europe in my house starting Separation and selling house. Very much your timeline. I moved to Bangkok 5 months ago.Good and honest video and well done.
You are super lucky the divorce ended that way. As you said, most men end up getting gutted and left for dead from divorce.
Hi Peter you handsome man great video today I really enjoyed this one here you have a great place that your living in now I wish you the best of luck and your do fine with all the lovely women there and the great food too thanks for sharing this video I hope it helps other people in your situation have a great day
Thanks a ton for sharing your story and valuable advices Peter. I am happy to know that you are living in the place you love with living in peace.
Thanks for sharing Peter I wish you well & all the best in your retirement
Unless you have a lot of money, retiring in the West is pretty boring and expensive. A lot of these guys end up alone, celibate, sitting in front of the television all day.
That happens when you hit 50 years old in the west 😂😂😂
All the best for the next chapter in your life , you’ve certainly got your head screwd on , and your family sound really nice
you don't retire in the west you fade away and die
It’s just as bad or maybe worse in Asia for someone who has very little money.
@@mrslcom It’s almost impossible to be worse, life in the west is a soul crushing routine no matter how much money you have besides life should be about quality not quantity. The best time to retire is between 50 and 60 years old because your Cock still gets hard you can still walk you have no aches and pains yet and not too many chronic diseases
Great vlog Peter I’m a few years younger than you but have already decided fo retire ASAP and spend time in Thailand. I wish you well with your new adventure it’s a no brainer
Another great video Peter, your best one so far. Thanks for sharing...😃
I really respect your honesty Peter fair play mate 👏 👍
Hey Peter, thanks for sharing your journey, I appreciate your honesty, and I'm sure a lot of people can relate.
Really nice to hear about your personal story. Thanks
Greetings Peter! 👋 This was an awesome background/origin story. Love it!!!
Fascinating. Thanks for the backstory.
Great video Peter. I could see the emotion on your face. You are just human. I hope you will be okay. . Make the most of Thailand mate. Maybe some day in the future I can meet there. 👍👍
Pete. I really enjoyed this one. Nice to hear about your life from the past to the present. I’m sure that you will inspire many men to make the same or similar choices in their lives. Thanks for sharing . Cheers 🍻 🍻
Thank you Peter for a great video. Being a young healthy minded 66 year old who was married for 30 years, I have decided to live in Jomtien from this August, having spent all of March exploring Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai as a single guy. Loved every second of it! 👌🏼
Like you i am from England, left in 94 with a mate but I have always realised I can never go back. My mate keeps going back but never happy. Young people beware once you get the Asian bug you never lose it. Your story is a good example of this.
First trip overseas for me was Singapore way back in ‘81. Back when Singapore was a very different place. Spent the next 10 years traveling to Asia with work. Left that job and moved to Japan where I’ve been living since. I’m 60 now and after huge numbers of trips to Thailand over the years, I plan to retire there in the next 2-3 years. I totally get what you’re saying about that Asia bug. :-)
@@cbs1963 I am in Japan too. I will spend more time in Thailand and the Philippines. Due to proximity we don't have to choose and can have two lives in Japan and SE Asia.
@@trevorharvey105 wow....small world. Whereabouts? I'm near Kobe.
Yes, Japan is good because it's pretty close to everything but the frigid winters kill me. I'll be hopefully doing rotations between Japan and Thailand. 3-4 mths here, then 3-4 mths there.
@@cbs1963 I am in Tokyo. Like you I want to escape the winters. Philippines for me has the edge over Thailand just because of distance and English but sometimes for a change.Thailand is good, I still like Japan in spring and Autumn
super entertaining and very very honest~! love your stories bro : )
This has to be one of your best videos Peter. Many thanks
Thanks for making a great video Peter. Very honest of you to admit some were your fault and good advice on what to think about of your planning on making the move 👏👏👏
Thankyou for a very insightful interesting Video. I can relate to a little of it. Seen so many marriage endings break guys and make them so bitter. Glad you are having a nice life.
I would say the bottom line is (1) have an income to support your chosen lifestyle, & (2) have a solid reliable health insurance plan to cover the risks of getting older, & to cover the risks from Thai driving behavior.
Living the dream needs a sound financial base!
ive watched you pretty much from the start peter and always enjoy your content..thank you for sharing your background and honesty, wish you all the best for your future 👍👍

Well well buddy, so glad I had the opportunity to know you and do a You Tube video with you.
