    • @lorikeetrainwing
      @lorikeetrainwing Рік тому +23

      To me it seems more about classism. Racial categories less easily shifted, but status symbols can change again and again like belly-stars, or white and colorful fabric, or grammar rules. When lower class people gain the means to catch up, move the goalposts. I think that better describes the Sneeches' hijinx.
      No less effective a message and no less pointless a problem, though.

    • @johnnastrom9400
      @johnnastrom9400 9 років тому +71

      Xifihas It is more about classism than racism. The scammer in this movie represents the fashion industry, the luxury car industry, or the industry that promotes whatever is the trend of the day. One the trendy items are purchased by the "uncool" crowd (starless bellied people), they are no longer trendy and the snobs (star bellied people) want something new that sets them apart of the other crowd.

    i used to love watching this cartoon as a kid. looking at it now, i find it to be a very smart moral. all the sneetches were basically given plastic surgery so they can match the other sneetches so they wouldn't be segregated from them. i love the part when things got so crazy that they could no longer tell themselves apart from each other. i think it really shows why things like Racism is so stupid because really we may all look different but we are all sneetches.. i mean human...
    not sure what moral Dr. Suess was intending it to be but that's the moral i got out of it. so what if you look different?

    • @tashakoons5381

      Cloud Strife07 Cemetery Database
      Planning Started: 2007
      Construction Started: January 2008
      Completed: Ongoing
      Napier City Council is making good progress on an extensive project aimed at auditing and simplifying public access to all records for the city's six cemeteries.
      This large exercise is drawing together all the information lodged with or available to the Council. At the end of April 2014, 18,166 of 38,041 records had been completed and were accessible online. These records encompassed Wharerangi Cemetery, the Western Hills Cemetery and, most recently, Eskdale Cemetery.
      Work is currently underway on Taradale Cemetery for which there are about 4000 records. Park Island and Napier Hill cemeteries will follow. While these records are still to be audited and loaded onto the database, the public can still access the information held by the Council.
      Information being collated includes aerial photos of burial sites, cemetery records, photos of headstones and data sourced from funeral directors and monumental services. This information is being made available as a permanent record on the Council website, providing a valuable database and a resource for genealogical research.
      Unfortunately, no Council records exist for the years 1857-1895 as this information was destroyed in the 1931 earthquake.
      All the available information recorded in original cemetery registers is held in computer files. Council has a record of headstone information, including inscriptions, and a file listing names of some early arrivals in the Napier area, as recorded in newspapers of the period.

      Presumably because they and their families have been marginalized from the rest of sneetch society for so long that they lack the generational resources to access marshmallows and hot dogs. I'd imagine the star-bellied supremacist society also did things like ghettoize the starless, demolish their homes under auspices of eminent domain to build sprawling, inefficient suburbs, police their neighborhoods with sneetches who knew there would be no consequences if they should happen to be extraordinarily violent, and systematically deny the starless access to every resource they could.
      Just as an example.

    For years I always wondered why the Plain Bellies didn't host their own fancy parties and games and sporting events-then it suddenly dawned on me-they couldn't because they didn't have the money! The Star Bellies had the cash so they could host all these fancy parties and social events. While Dr. Seuss doesn't actually say that the Star Bellies had cash and the Plain Bellies didn't he hints at it-McBean charges the Star Bellies $10.00 a piece to have their stars removed whereas he charges the Plain Bellies only $3.00 a piece to have stars put on their bellies. The Star Bellies gave more money than the Plain Bellies, therefore they get charged more for their procedure! Great story about class division, class discrimination, and prejudice based on class! Just as relevant today as it was back in the 1850's!!

      Jenifer Joseph there is a clear flaw with your argument. namely that the they the would have have the same amount of many as both groups ran out of money at the same time give or take. also the price to add or remove did not change. if one group had more or less in the beginning then either that group would have stopped at a different point or the prices would have had to be adjusted based on which group they originally belonged to.

      The plain belly sneetches were raised to be attentive to the opinions of others (as opposed to star bellies, raised to look down on others), and therefore genuinely believed they were the "worst sneetches". Therefore, even if they had their own parties, they believed it would be nothing like the amazing parties that the "best sneetches" had, and figured they shouldn't even bother. The plain bellies don't want to have parties with the "worst" group - they want to have parties with the "best" group.

    Sadly, from most of the comments posted here, people think this only applies to race and miss only the other forms this takes. At the time this story was created, racism may have been the overwhelming problem in the western world; however, today classism is in full force and the sneetches in this movie symbolize it very well.

    • @TheFiercestCreatureInTheWorld
      @TheFiercestCreatureInTheWorld 8 років тому

      I think this applies best to racism as the problem with the sneetches was their appearance. However, this doesn't mean that we should ignore problems like classism.

    This just shows how an expected "fashion" or "looks" is so silly.
    People pay big money to change how they look to "fit in".
    Plastic surgery, implants, clothing.
    Nothing wrong with dressing up or wearing costumes when it's just for fun. Especially just to show one's individuality.
    But when it's to fit in to a certain expected look, that is where the fashion industry wins and everyone loses.
