Ok I’m gonna put this here because so many people have a problem with it in this video. In the 90s it was a running joke that Jeff Gordon was the first boy to win at the Brickyard in NASCAR while Dale Earnhardt was the first man to win at the Brickyard. It’s a joke, not a serious dig at Gordon. Lighten up y’all.

NASCAR has learned nothing. I haven't watched a race in over 15 years, and I used to never miss a race. The whole "points chase" idea was where it really fell apart. Then they put the top x drivers in points are guaranteed a starting spot, instead of qualifying on time. Seeing the local track experts get in was always fun. The idea of stage racing, just from hearing about it, sucks. NASCAR is so afraid of competition and controversy that the sport has become stagnant.
NASCAR has become so obsessed with attracting other types of crowds that they alienated there core fans. Example, for a Bristol race, 20 years ago you had to get your tickets 3 years in advance. Someone I just talked to said they now close the turns off and move everyone to the straights to make the stands look full on TV. That's a disgrace.

I was the same way/ I planned my Sundays around the race, but I stopped watching back around 2008. I tried watching the Daytona 500 this year and turned it on about ten or fifteen minutes into the race. Then they started doing this segmented race thing. I'd never seen that before. I texted my sister and asked her how long they had been doing it. She said about two or three years now. I turned off the race and haven't watched any since. I'd rather watch the Tour De France than any NASCAR race now and I live in a race city. Two races a year, as a matter of fact. Used to go to the race in March every year. Now, I didn't even realize they were in town this last weekend. Didn't care.

I hate to bring it up but when Dale Sr got killed, NASCAR died to. He was the only person who could keep NASCAR in check, in my opinion. When NASCAR started manipulating the races to get the outcome they think the fans want and fail, They just keep manipulating more. A Nascar fan that dates back to the 60's, I think the "sport" has lost its way. It started as a bunch of guys battling it out to see who had the fastest car. "Car" meaning something everybody could buy from the nearest Hudson, Chrysler, Ford, Chevy or Pontiac dealer. Now due to performance engineering and aerodynamic studies, the "car" is just an illusion. Don't get me wrong, driver safety is important if not essential. I love watching racing but my viewing is mainly K&N, Camping World trucks, and Xfinity races. Monster series has lost its grit.
The sense of Nascar's history has gone, shutting down great tracks like North Wilkesboro, Rockingham, and stealing Labor Day from Darlington just so they can reschedule those dates to newer tracks with more empty seats. Christ, Darlington was the first speedway and 75 cars started that race in 1950.
The point of this meandering is that the spirit of Nascar is right there in its name. National Association of Stock Car Automobile
Racing. Get back to racing STOCK cars...

Supposedly they’re trying to bring back The Rock and “update” it to conform to current standards. Not holding my breath on that speculation.
My family and myself have enjoyed Martinsville. Still decent racing there. Although the racing was decent, we just got the feeling that we were getting financially gouged every time we turned around. So we quit going.

@@windalejrno88 Spence I don't think the economy has much to do with it now. The stands are empty and tickets can be had very cheap. Buy a cheap seat and sit anywhere you want. Maybe for some families, sure, you are definitely right. Im only saying that the COT was the beginning of the end. NASCAR had already tried the IROC series.... identically prepared cars and put the best drivers around the world they could find including NASCAR's best and the stands were empty for those events too. It was "close racing, parody, close finishes". Sound familiar? The COT started a sudden slide and NASCAR tried to replay every thing that had been successful including making the whole series like an All Star race in segments which only took away from what made that day special. Now "to save money" they can only run mandated shocks, mandated springs, mandated gears.... whats left for innovation? Traditionally loved tracks in the southeast were mothballed and new ones built all over the country... NASCAR just knew they had something everyone all over the country would fall in love with... it didn''t happen and it just insulted the fan base that had built them up. Many things has brought the sport down, not just the COT, it was just the beginning of bad decisions. The sport is dead unless something drastic happens like throwing away the plates and end plate racing or open them up and get the speeds back up to 205-215 range. Bring some excitement back to the sport. Otherwise.... NASCAR has seen its best days and dying right in front of us.

Facts. In 2008 Goodyear performed their tire test in March. I live in Indiana, in March, we still get freaking snow here! You cannot use a tire in July when you test in 30+ degree colder weather. On top of that, Indy’s ticket policy sucks, therefore, they refused refunds to all the fans that wanted to leave during this race, Indy still hasn’t learned from that mistake. Hopefully, Penske changes that.

Moments like this ruin a great sport. People forget beautiful stories that happened afterwards. Jamie Mac, Paul Menard, Ryan Newman scoring a home track win. Jeff Gordon winning as an aging legend. Kasey Kahne giving it his all in 2017 to win even though he was obviously sick from exhaustion. It's not the track, the tires. It's people and their opinion. I have been watching nascar since I was 5. I'm soon to be 35. I left before the stage stuff started. I might tune in to a race once and a while, but I don't care any more. The chase is what caused me to lose interest. I was ok with only ten drivers being in it, but over time. Nascar added more drivers. Then kept changing the rules to get in. Them wanting to add artificial drama. Was another tipping point for me. The whole cot era. Was full of phantom cautions. That made races more boring. Plus the looks of the cot car. It didn't help. I came back when they made the current bodies. In 2013 for a while. As they looked like proper race cars again. The final straw was kyle winning that championship around 15 or 16. After missing 1/4 of the year. Because of a injury at daytona. No matter who the driver was. He shouldn't be able to miss that munch racing, and get free ride to the chase.

NASCAR committed suicide by forgetting the Golden rule of sales...The customer is always right.
    1. Fans want the cars to be shaped similar to their model name...they are not.
    2. Fans don't like stage racing....tv does.
    3. Fans don't like paying for cable TV to watch a race....
    4. Fans don't like the obvious favoritism in rules enforcement shown to the top teams...
    5. Fans don't like restrictor plates and the freight train racing it causes. (There are much better ways to keep top speeds down without taking away the safety of good acceleration )
    6. Fans don't like the rediculous ticket prices. (Why don't they understand that when young folks see the empty stands on tv it turns them off?)
    7. Fans don't like having SOOOOOO many cookie cutter 1.5 tracks.
    8. Fans don't like it when the driver who wins the most races is not the champion. OMG the playoff scenarios over the last 2 decades have all been stupid and only rarely award the best team.
I could go on but why? No decision makers are listening because they think they know everything but it is apparent to anyone with an ounce of common Sense that they do not. NASCAR is basically dead and will only remain on Life support due to cable deals and sponsor money.

The Brickyard 400 had to be the being of the NASCAR expansion to larger markets as well which turned out bad for the most part. It’s interesting that the Brickyard 400 was thriving during the Indycar split 1996-2008. Then after Indycar merged the Indy 500 attendance started to go back up for the last 5 years.

NASCAR died the day they announced the race for the chase and then subsequently changed the rules for the chase every single year that followed. Every year NASCAR changed the rules of how the champion would be crowned, they erased more and more of it's history and the drivers who held records in the sport. It's the equivalent of moving the home plate, pitchers mount and the out field fence every season of MLB. What good are home run stats when the distance to the fence keeps moving? And as a reminder, NASCAR secretly did this because Hendrick's and "Wonder Boy" Jeff Gordon was so dominant that they figured if they poured salt in the soup they could fix the flavor. Oh and then Jimmy Johnson won everything since! NICE WORK!

The tickets were literally sit anywhere you want and move at any point. All of turn 3/4 were blocked off to try and keep crowds in a couple stands for shots. We just went right up to the start finish line like it was nothing.
The race was nothing like before. It was so boring, MTJ and KB just led in a line all day. Every time they came by you were just looking at a line of cars.
I’ve been going to the indy500 since 2014 now though and my god is that some racing!! Indycar is the sport that needs to blow up because those guys have amazing machines and know how to drive them.

I think the COT had as much do with it as anything. That package alone hurt the sport detrimentally.

Not sure why a tire problem, which I assume is long since fixed, had much to do with the Brickyard and the falling interest there. I think there are alot more factors at play than that.

never thought NASCAR had any business at this track anyway. this track is not built for these kind of cars. never cared for the race. let it die.

When they tried a few tests back in the 70's to see if it would be possible to run stock cars at Indy Richard Petty and the other drivers then told NASCAR that the track was not suitable for that style of racing. The walls were not strong enough for stock cars and the track wasn't wide enough. Granted the cars were a lot bigger back then but the reasons were the same. My late son-in-law and I were at the '08 race sitting in turn four and every time they came around the turn we got hit by the tire dust. We went home with our whole left sides covered with tire rubber. A lot of people were leaving before the race even ended.

To be fair I don't think attendance is good for nascar anywhere I ve seen alot of empty stands at almost every race. I also think ims was never meant to run stock cars it has no bank nascar are big and bulky dont take turns well, passing is almost non existent it is a indy car track and almost 300000 show up to that every year to the 500 I honestly don't see a reason to run the race anymore

NASCAR has its big TV deals. And those big TV contracts are why I don't watch anymore, at least not live. More than 50% of the races are now broadcast on the network's cable only channels. Since I refuse to be ripped off by cable and satellite providers, those races are unavailable to me. I pick which races I want to see, and watch them on UA-cam a couple weeks later.

Iver Tranes I still watch it but you are exactly right you are spot on. It’s about like University of Kentucky basketball that I dearly love you have to have cable or satellite to get a lot of the games years ago they come on the local channels for free.

Nascar popularity exploded in the mid/late-90's and now it's just gone back to the fans (and those fans kids) who liked it before that time. Some people wonder why the popularity has dwindled, but I wonder how it ever got so popular to begin with? I know that sounds like a slight, but it's an honest question.

I think it’s a little crazy as a kid I hoped nascar and goodyear would build tires that would hold up and be almost bulletproof.
Now we are wanting them to change compounds so they will wear so turning left for 500 miles will be more interesting. Absolutely strange how thin the line is between Entertainment and circus is.

I live in Indiana yes that race was horrible and as most driver's said the race shouldn't have taken place for safety reasons. But the reason the Brickyard has failed was every year the race kept getting later and later into the fall originally it was at the end of summer when people are on vacation which is why the attendance was so high.

Heres my two cents on this. Yes, Goodyear had a horrible tire but let's not forget that this was the first full year for the Car of Tomorrow. Goodyear had to learn and adapt to what teams were doing and the increase in side force and not just down force. Those cars had a wider foot print, was taller, different Center of Gravity along with the horrible aero push and side force factors. NASCAR was fortunate that this happened as late as it did in the season. It was just the perfect storm that befell the 2008 Brickyard.
