This is 15 minutes from my house, so cool that you guys were likely in my hometown! My local school used to do winter trips to this resort to go down-hill tubing on the snow, thanks for bringing back these memories. They also had a golf course too, my father and I played a round here when I was also very young. I hope this place is revived to its full potential.
Very cool! We just happened to be in the area & I hadn't been since around 2013 I think. Sounds like new development is coming soon now based on a submission back in April 2024!
Over 50 years ago I owned a small plane and flying to North Bay I came across a large abandoned resort on the edge of a lake. There were no roads leading to it I could see . In the boathouse was a large wooden boat raised out of the water and on the stern was a name "Lady Evelyn". I circled it a few times and yes I was that low. My guess was the resort was from the 1920s. I have searched the area on Google map many times and can't find it.
Very interesting find. As soon as I saw the name in your title I had to watch. I learned to ski there in 1978 if I remember correctly. 3rd year of H.S., school trip for 3 days. Whoa...memories. with all the over growth its a bit hard to get exact bearings, but do remember the hills somewhat. I once and awhile recall going to Talisman ski resort, man that was in those days a bustling place! Memories are great, but have to say its kinda sad to see whats become of it, I expect poor winter conditions contributed to its downfall. Would be interesting to see what comes of your findings of the repairs. I can only imagine the $ involved with it. Thanks for sharing your adventure. First time seeing your channel, will be interested in seeing more. Those were the party days. Andrew
The plan is to restore as a retreat for the wealthy individual. The land is owned by a separate company and they plan to build residential housing for the wealthy. Lots of push back from Grey County residents but it will probably happen regardless. On the other hand, cool video and I do remember taking a school class trip here as a child. Beautiful land and beautiful memories!
Nope. Thats a different project on the old golfcourse land. The old lodge is being repurposed into a nordic spa. Im a Grey County resident and am certainly not against development - its a great opportunity for my nearby community
Makes a person wonder what they plan on doing with it. Maybe they have multiple investors. Keep us updated on this. Thank you RR for most excellent video.
This is not the first time that it as bought for redevelopment it was bought out by some investors at some point but it really didn’t get the rebuild like they had hoped.
We went skiing there with our kids for many years great place no crowds and a wonderful alternative to Blue Mountain so sad, but have great family memories
Hotel and Nordic spa planned for former Talisman resort property Author of the article: Rob Gowan Published Aug 19, 2024 • Last updated 1 day ago • 4 minute read
As far as I know, my wedding was the last event held there. October, 2010. Stayed in the hotel and dinner and bar in the main building. It was a lovely place.
Looks like it will be up to 370 units of town houses and semi-detached. The current buildings will not be included in the plan so it looks like they are safe for now. If the tennis courts are to be torn up for housing then they're ok but if they have to restore it, that's a lot of work. Maybe they'll turn it into a swimming pool/ice rink?
Talisman shut down 13 years ago in 2011. Unfortunately, when they closed it, they neglected to drain the plumbing so ALL the pipes froze and burst inside the walls and floors causing millions of dollars of damage.
I worked here for many years in the early 2000s. Sad to see it like this. It was my first job. I worked in the retal shop, and we used to see over 500 people a day pass through for rentals. In the summer time id work the golf course and grounds keeper. Near the end of my career, I worked in the hotel section. Fun fact in 2006, the coors light mystery mansion event was held here. I do kno that prior to covi, it was being restore, but now it looks abandoned again. The insurance got way too high for this place after a couple of deaths from skiing.
I’ve stayed here before, and years ago. The first room at one minute in is a board room, banquet hall. Great video. I just looked on-line and it says it closed in 2011.
I read that a developer was looking to build condos on the Talisman lands. I used to work in the ski biz and spent quite a few days over the years doing events there and escorting VIPs around the place. Sad to see its died.
My family skied there for five years in the early 2000's. My kids all learned to ski there. My wife and I Ski Patrolled there for a couple of years too. It was a really nice little family ski resort. Then a new owner took over and tried to squeeze more money out of the members. He killed the resort. We went to Blue to ski for the same money. Lots of great memories there though!
Looks like it could be a really cool resort once renovated…but it would take $$$ to get the lift operational. Just Needs a lot of TLC, construction efforts, and a few mowers..Nice find though!❤
i got into this place back in 2011 when it had just been abandoned. it was phenominal. lots of stupid people trashing the place after but all the rooms were made up with chocolate on the bed when i got there. ran into a couple squatters and a dude stealing kegs from the kitchen. been back a few times since but it got bad fast then lots of security. too little too late. amazing to see this video! one of my favourites i had a chance in was the old mimico detention centre on horner. dont ask me how. never had any cam or video equipment at the time so just slowly fading memories left. haha.
@@RiddimRyder its kinda crazy thinking back how perfect a place to explore it was. my experiences at talisman are what spurred my interest in abandoned places and DEFINITELY got me hitting up your channel again and again. a lot of the places you go, is it more of taking a chance? do you ever have 'permission'? i get sometimes its impossible to even find the owner. youve probably answered before but what got you into exploring? particularly abandonded and lost to time places?
looks like working inside but if they dont start cleaning up around the outside the growth will totally take over and start rotting all the outside nice find
I guess Blue Mountain out-competed them. I never went there but did a summer weekend at a place in the BM compound that was brand new at the time. If you're the lesser competitor and trying to expand four or five years behind it will financially catch up suddenly like that.
It seems that most of that "new" work is from 2021 and prior. Then it stopped. The latest news is to develop it as a residential community along with the ski hill and golf course as recreational areas.
FYI: Over 2 million in tax arrears paid by municipality, then sold to 2 guys who will supposedly spend 400 million to restore and turn it into a wellness resort.
I think they don't have the money to seriously fix up all that rotten stuff because they're doing it piece by piece whenever some cash rolls in somehow. The place is doomed. Check it out again in a year.
From the August 19, 2024 issue of the Owen Sound Sun Times: "The owners of the former Talisman Mountain Resort property have announced plans for a large health and wellness community complete with a hotel and Nordic spa at the former ski resort. Brian Ellis and Phil Cavano, who own the property that includes the former resort and ski hills, have announced the proposal that could see more than $400-million invested and bring hundreds of jobs to the Beaver Valley."
What a shame ......lotta money went into there, ski resorts must be extremely high risk vs reward because BC has quite a few failed ones going back to 1960s
Mortgages maybe? Let the bank deal with it. It was a fine resort and had a good restaurant, but the skiing always was second rate because the hills are too gentle and too shallow, in the opinion of experienced skiiers. Faster and higher hills compete nearby. Something could be done with this place, but reviving the skiing would be foolish.
Our economy is so very sad! I find this upsetting. I used to come to this resort many times for conferences. Lots of great memories. I can’t believe it I just cannot believe it..

That’s a beautiful spot for a resort. Would be a great place to relax once it is restored.

Wonder where the pool went. Used to be a great outdoor pool that was heated for winter use. Great resort back in the day. Lots of ski weekends there.
I don't recall seeing it back in 2013ish when I first went. Must have been filled in a while ago!
Holy crap I stayed here and went skiing here as a teenager

That would be a great summer stay as well beautiful country side.
Yes!! It's so nice that area
Unfortunately Blue Mountain resort and its redevelopment and financial backing has put a few of the smaller resorts in that area out of business.
Neat old resort. Good to see some form of restoration. Wondering why it closed. Too bad you couldn't get inside. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It looked like a great place to go. too bad it was left that way. Great explore, thanks 😊 👍🫶

I got drunk af on a grade 12 field trip to Talisman. I'm not much of a skier but posted up at the bar in the chalet. Good times...
hahaha aweosme!
looks like working inside but if they dont start cleaning up around the outside the growth will totally take over and start rotting all the outside nice find
Yes....the inside was all being worked on it seems.
Great family ski resort in the 1970’s.

For sure. Blue was definitely the go to spot and obviously still is.
I presume The Peaks are also still going strong too ???
Holy shit I recognize the house on McCowan. That place had a nest of vultures when I went 😂. Torn down now

'Fraid so... The development plans make more sense, but perhaps not a whole lot...
I used to race quads up the ski hills 2 years ago
I bet that'd be awesome. Maybe i need to bring my quad there for a revisit!

This is true
The banks repo these propertys and let them rot instead of finding incentives for buyers or private owners ,shame

👍🆒

You might make some muslims curious and they take it over to make a mosque. Or government will use for migration
LMAO. So thats what is called a ski hill in Ontario eh.
hahahah...yeah...we don't have huge mountains really so it is what it is!
Exactly. Mind you this was one of the worst. There are far better nearby. Still not up to the Gatineaux or the Rockies.
Another Climate Change Victim. Winter in Southern Ontario has gotten shorter with a lot less snow.
Maybe developers can bulldoze the place and build 50 storey condos that are tiny and overpriced.
Hope our tax money was not used for this wasted place.
The facility owned millions in taxes so the township took it over. It is now with an investment company that will revitalize it.
