played this game in july when it was mostly fixed enough, really enjoyed it and honestly hope we get a souldiers 2 with better controls or more options on the controls. its not easy circling through a dozen items i have or potions, gets me killed sometimes

As a metroidvania nut, I've been eyeing this game for awhile, basically since the Indeimous review. But of course I wanted no part of the ridiculous difficulty & frequent crashes/save issues.. so ive waited.
Now I hear that most of the issues , on ps4, are fixed? My backlog is huge but it's on sale currently, so I'd give it a go if so... looooove that pixel art style.

Unfortunately I can't respond much on the ps4's performance, I played on Ps5 though and I can happily say I experienced zero technical issues, I think its a safe purchase and I really encourage you on getting it, its a great game.

I played this game recently on a ps4 standard and I can say it's a wonderful metroidvania. But there are several serious problems: the big one is that each saving can crash the game! The loading time is really long, even for the "fast" travel, the framerate tends to drop each time you defeat an enemy and there are some minor gliches. They released a 2.0 patch that make this game more unstable! It's really a shame because this game deserves these fixes, it's awesome.

Hello! Can you tell me if they fixed it? I'm experiencing something similar with the game Aeterna Noctis on the standard PS4. It's impossible to play. I'm looking for a new metroidvania and I became interested in Souldiers. But I don't want to go through the same frustration I went through with Aeterna.
If you could let me know how the game is running now, I would be very grateful! Sorry for my English. I'm Brazilian.
      Thank you very much!

@@fagundeskun Don't worry, I'm Italian! 😆 I know that Aeterna noctis is really broken, I don't know how these games are now. But I think Souldiers is less broken than Aeterna, but you have to be patient and save often. I played Souldiers till the end

Quick question: is the 30 hours for 73%-ish completion account for end credits, or just roughly 3/4 of the entire game?
Im not a completionist, but I do take time to explore and do as much as possible, and as such I’ll often finish games with a 70%-90% “completion” rate, meaning I didn’t do all the side quests, get collectibles, etc…
So is that what you meant: 30ish hours to finish the game at 73% completed or 30-ish hours to see roughly 3/4th of campaign?
Granted I realize this might be an odd, even nuanced, distinction, but one that may be important for new players.
Thanks. This is incredible review. One of the best out there. Truly shines. You’ve earned a sub.

First off thanks so much for the kind words man! I’ll be posting content again in January I had to take a little hiatus because of work. It’s a great question though in this specific review I meant 3/4 of the game. Keeping in mind I was doing my best to comb every inch and do all the side quests. I’ll definitely make sure to make that clearer in the future . I’ve got some pretty good games to talk about soon!

The best, part, however, is coming back to the game after its I trial release to see how it’s improved (or not) after updates.
So many games these days get bad initial reviews and wind up improving to greatness but by then the damage is already done and nobody realizes what a gem it is.
Hands down, your take is one of the most appreciated approaches to game review I’ve seen. Keep it up.

I played thru the re-release and is now trying the OG. New master is still quite far from OG warrior both in terms of numbers tuning and check/save point layout. IMO quite a lot was lost with the re-release.
Maybe it's because I've played the game once already, but while the OG felt frustrating and punishing (incredibly so at points), it's also generally fair. (obvious exceptions being project 0.5. 70+ dmg true combo that leaves you with paralysis when your player has like ~80 hp is not ok; A mage is prolly straight up ded.)
i think people mostly felt frustrated because they were expecting to fight trash mobs with their brains off or sight read bosses while spamming the attack button. Most enemies only have 1-3 attacks, bosses maybe 3-5, all of which are easily avoidable with clear damage windows afterwards. Once I made myself slow down and learn to dodge before trying to attack it felt fine.
Meanwhile the re-release added save points in many sorely needed places, but in doing so also released almost all the tensions of exploration. There's no satisfaction or catharsis upon getting to the next save point if the last one was only a minute ago and there was never any question as to whether you would make it. There's also no feeling cleverness by of opening shortcuts at strategic times to use them as checkpoints etc.
The game also actually has too much healing if you aren't saving them for the next fight, then the next, then the next etc. I'm on track to have like all 7 of the half/full heals for the final fight again, and will probably save them for ng+ there too. Over half of my frustrating progress losses are still from trying to conserve potions despite actively trying to not do that. I don't know those who are frustrated are doing the same, or are perhaps even more stingy.
But the OG does have some real problems. I had to restart the horse race quite a few times due to lag (and eventually reloaded every attempt). I've had project 0.5's room bug out on me a few times (solution is to find a pattern to close the doors before fighting), and fell into the void climbing down a ladder (actually a softlock) and lost all my unsaved progress in fire temple once. Backup your save i wanna say at least once a dungeon if playing the original.

Sounds like perhaps this is one of those games we can come back too after awhile. Let it lose its magic to time to later return and rediscover
I had to do that with Ghosts of Tsushima. 100% everything in first, second area and by then, as gorgeous and as much fun I had, I had leveled up basically everything I had and seen the magic it offered. Just got stale after a bit. (I realize that’s heresy) Had to let it go and return. I had spent hundreds of some hours in just those first two lands and the entire game can be beat in less than that. This is, if I may offer side note, the biggest issue I have with big open games. I do everything. Level up to max and then nothing left to see or do, other than story and sometimes I’m just not as engaged in story to keep going.)
Again. Great review. Super well done. Much appreciated.

Nope you’ve hit the nail on the head. I agree with everything you said. There was nothing inherently wrong with this title. I do think that overstaying your welcome is a design flaw BUT everyone has a different threshold for what that means.

im playing this now on ps4. Goddamn, i think the devs really hate the players lol. im currently at the fire temple and there was this one platforming work where you need to jump from a wall to an electrified elevator to another wall with another electrified elevator. it took me 15 minutes to finally pull it off.
i feel like the platforming at some parts is too much, a lot of platforming needs to be precise, too precise lol.

I was having a really hard time getting into it just because of how hard it is. I play all FromSoftware games and this one almost broke me. Right now, I'm plowing through the game with a mage in the Floating module and it feels like one of the best 2D games I've ever played. It takes forever to have the impression that your upgrades really make a difference and that's probably what killed the game for a lot of people. I am totally invested now and I enjoy the metroidvania aspects. It's fantastic and if it had been easier, a lot more gamers would praise it to the level it deserves.
The load times on the native PS4 are crushing. I had made the decision to download the PS4 version instead of the PS5's and it was a mistake Since I can't use my PS4 save to continue the game on my PS5, I downloaded the PS4 version to play on my PS5 and the load times are noticeably better. The load times on the PS5 version are much quicker, of course, but it's going to have to wait for my next game, if I choose to do a second playthrough. Not sure about this one! I will beat this game!

That question is tough for me Metroidvanias are my favorite genre but I’d have to say Hollow Knight, Blasphemous and Grime and Astalon are some of my favorites. I mean it's totally a preference thing man. For me 20 hours is the sweet spot. There are games like Elden Ring and Diablo that I have no problem with the length. I just think it's so difficult for a game to be truly engaging for 40+ hours and a lot of games in just my opinion become worse as a result. For example I LOVED this new Final Fantasy but I'm about 53 hours in and I don't know if I'm going to finish it the game has some of the worst pacing and in my opinion really drags down the experience.

This game is a great metroidvania, but the Desert level is where I called it quits. I've played too many metroidvenias, beat all the souls games multiple times (im currently working to 100% Celeste ), beat Salt and sanctuary / sacrifice, Hades, Dead Cells, the list can go on but the Desert Pyramid area is complete nonesense. Every dungeon drags on soooooooo soooo long, backtracking, find this, now go through these doors that take you to complete random areas with teleporting enemies that dodge your attacks and attack in a split second, area of effect enemies, projectile enemies, enemies that debuff, poison enemies, enemies then immobilize you all in the same room at the same time. Great game but im done for now till they rework the dungeons

So, i have a love hate relationship with this game, on one hand it's combat and mechanics are pretty well designed, but the map design is damn terrible in a lot of instances, like the pyramid having 2 maps but it being impossible to view the inner pyramid map unless you're there, or in places where the have moving platforms, making them take way too long to move into position.
On top of that the fact it's maps are way too big and fairly repetitive in the sense they're not recognizable kills the whole aspect of metroidvania games where you remember a spot where you couldn't progress so you return after a new power

"...Couldn't beat it 3 more times for platinum" meaning you beat it? This came shortly after complaining the game was too long and you couldn't get through it all? I'm confused. Are you complaining that the game is too long, or that platinum completion is?
Personally, I'm perfectly fine with stopping a game before I've done everything. In fact, I even love that there's more for me to look forward to if I ever decide to come back. I feel like I'm an oddball and no one else feels that way. Probably because I grew up in an era where most people I knew rarely beat games. It's hard for me to get a read on this critique though, to see what it would do for me. Different opinions are fine. It's just all about understanding the differences and if they'd apply to oneself.

Game too challenging or too long? So i take points out.
In 2023, we are even offended that a dev takes the effort to make a long nice experience, and we bash at him for that?
There was this streamer at Hollow Knight, who forgot his exploration points and asked his viewers where to go. While also bashing at them, for spoiling at him.
Games dont need to be easier, and devs dont need to bend to public outcries by average bobs.
People need to play better and more methodically.

Too be clear I did not remove any points at all for length , just because that’s a negative for me that’s not an objective negative towards my final score. I’m just voicing my opinion on the game for others to decide

True but if you played then you would know some areas just keep going

Doesn't respect your time??? I've never understood this dumb argument about games, I don't want games to respect my time, I want them to respect my waller by giving me enough content to warrant a purchase to begin with, imo a $20 game should be a minimum of 20 hours, anything less isn't worth the purchase, I would feel like I wasted my money, this is one of the few metroidvanias that actually respects the money I spent on their game

That’s ok man! We all have different things we want out of games :) I have no problem spending $60 on 8 hours lol

I believe in quality over quantity

@@grittygaming I believe a good developer can balance both quality and quanity because both are equally important, it doesn't matter how good a game is, if it's over in less than 10 hours then it doesn't really matter in these types of games progression is one of the most important aspects and you can't have decent progression without a lengthy game that warrants that progression, this is something that all RPGs have to balance, let's stop pretending that quanity isn't important because looking at most high quality RPGs, it's definitely important, most of the best selling games are either long or infinitely replayable, I think it's pretty clear most gamers value quanity of content, I'm sure some of them pretend they don't care but I guarantee if the next final fantasy or dragon quest were less than 30 hours ppl would start complaining

@@grittygaming I definitely have a huge problem spending $60 on a 8 hour game, most gamers would not buy something like that, that's called a rip off

@@mathewhosier9739 listen bro I’m not gonna argue with you , I obviously didn’t believe it was balanced well, if you watched the video I mentioned other games that are good examples of length. I’ve played so many metroidvanias man, these dungeons fucking drag period. Glad u liked it tho homie!

Maybe, the game STILL sucks because it's STILL broken. This game wins the award for the WORST character control EVER. TRASH.
