In a world facing complex environmental problems, science is looking for ways to find answers on a global scale. Traditional research methods often reach their limits when it comes to creating large-scale and accurate models of our ecosystems. However, the combination of modern deep learning with satellite data opens doors for a comprehensive assessment of nature.
Jan Dirk Wegner, a researcher in the field of machine learning, presented his ongoing work. His data-driven approach promises great potential for achieving transparent and globally consistent assessments of our environment. In the lecture, Wegner presented methods for estimating environmental parameters such as snow depth as well as vegetation parameters such as biomass or vegetation height.
