This is the song for which my favourite singer Kishore Kumar won his first Filmfare award for playback singing.
That’s Sharmila Tagore, known as the Bengal tigress. This movie is an epic for Rajesh Khanna. Made HIM the first SUPER STAR of India. Also put Kishore Kumar on the Chart as a singer. Mohd Rafi was supposed to have sung this song but for some reason he couldn’t do it and it was ultimately given to Kishore Kumar. This song made him the most popular singer after Mohd Rafi in India of all times.
It was a secret wedding not declared yet, so they really couldn’t be having sex.
She’s one the most beautiful and talented actress of Indian cinema....can do any genre successfully and was Satyajit Ray’s muse......May years later, her son, one of the most talented actors in India, Saif Ali Khan got to be on that same train making the same journey that you read about for one of his movies.

The singer is one of the greatest playback singer of India.. kishore kumar ...in this song the couple had married secretly without informing even their close family members as yet and hence the hesitancy on behalf of the couple to go intimate or control their desires as since they had married in secret,for their family and society at large, they were still not married and in 1960's ,society was not permissive as it is today about premarital sex..hence the whole song is about the confusion going on in the mind of the couple about their desires on one hand and on the other hand the thought of what will be repercussions in society at large.

This song was a huge hit. As far as I can remember, they were not married. Mistake did indeed happen and it resulted in a kid.
They were technically married in a temple but not with any witnesses.

MAtthew, this seduction song occurs near the beginning of the movie, where the couple secretly marries and...ahem... consummates their union...leading to all the mess that follows lol
This movie is one of my favorites. I've seen it so many times and the music is amazing
As I watch it now after so many years I realise that we in the 70s felt awkward watching this number to really appreciate the sensuality of this song. Wow!! It was/is really a HOT number.

I love love love the intensity of the performances, and the direction of the camera, it's one of my favourite songs. It's very easy to get caught up in the sheer drama of it all, but actually there's a lot more going on. The circling round of the fire in the middle of the room is very much evocative of the ritual circling of the marriage fire in a traditional Hindu wedding, which by itself is a form of worship, hence the title of the film. Even after the death of her husband, the heroine still carries herself like a wife and mother, maintaining her honour and duty as is expected per religious and social mores. But it's also signalling to the audience an acceptance of shifting cultural attitudes, an invitation to question what one might do in their position (as you point out, they are married, after all), and from this perspective you can certainly see how Indian cinema becomes more permissive going into the 1970s.
By the way, I'm glad you noted the vocals of the impressive Kishore Kumar. As an actor, his vocals were never fully appreciated, as he tended towards comedy and his music drew a great deal from American swing. So he never compared favourably with playback giants such as Muhammad Rafi, or Mukesh. It was not until this particular film that public opinion changed, and he rightly gained the recognition he deserved. I'm pretty sure this song helped!
