And what a handsome baby Kayembe was (and is)! Coincidentally came across this video again but I always remembered how young he was when he was already crawling around, very curious about everything, even when he was sitting on Freddy's back. He was given a lot of freedom by Freddy and also always took every opportunity to develop himself. That little guy was only 5 1/2 months old then! An energetic bundle full of zest for life. A little king 👑. Kayembe will always remain my first and greatest gorilla love. A beautiful look back at a little boy who grew up, was really naughty regularly but still heartwarming, a real toddler. And now at 3 years old he has become a lot calmer and can also play very sweetly with his sisters Jameela and Kunda. A beautiful video of a promising Kayembe. Thanks Larry! And especially because to this day we are often kept informed twice a week about the life of the Mokolo family and especially the 3 beautiful, young and lively gorillas in Cleveland through your beautiful videos!🙏🏻🦍🐒❣️
I Can see why Freddy loves that little stinker so much. Wasnt he the cutest little baby? It had probably been a while since Freddy had a baby she’s so darn good to him gentle patient. Jameela resembles him his body type both just beautiful

He (Mokolo) was in a bachelor group since age seven (so 23-24 years) until his last male partner passed in 2016. Im so glad they brought Freddy and old hut extremely savvy female as to how a gorilla 🦍 troop should work (she had just lost her male partner and was by herself at Zoo Miami and then they also brought in Kebi Moyo fom Columbus Zoo to be Mofolo’s first female partners. Plus with Freddy’s experience as an alpha female both her and Kebi could make it a smooth transfer for Mokolo and then they brought in the other two which one was only 21 but Tulsa was raised by human so it makes her more vocal than the others but Mokolo is handling her outburst quite well. He’s disciplining her but not overtly. It’s truly a great troop and before my (MS) I use to go around the USA 🇺🇸. Japan 🇯🇵, many others.. As a personal note and my opinion I have to say I’m more impressed considering everything that we here in the USA 🇺🇸 are leading the way and not saying other’s aren’t working hard to do and make the other facilities first class as well (so no disrespect intended) I just like to sit quietly to observe and take notes. I feel like I truly want to write a book about Freddy fostering on the day Kayembe was born along with her spontaneous milk production at 46 and the whole troop truly being one of her best I’ve observed and I’m hopeful ti help raise money for the new wonderful facility that they’ve already started but I know that more money can always be raised to help all the animals. I hope to visit next spring after I make contact with the management first about coming to ask some questions and hopefully getting some more important information that’ll make the book even better in my humble opioids. Also about how Cleveland doing research on Silverback’s getting heart disease in captivity and the tremendous strides made not only in the USA 🇺🇸 but I. Other countries, also other important details they’ve learned from that science on their diets and other important discoveries they might’ve made as well. I feel that would help people want to give more knowing they’re making the animals life’s better and being a CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES in the wild. P.S. Please forgive all grammatical errors because of my (MS) side effects I have issues with eyesight and even cognitive problems if I’m extremely tired but that’s fortunately rare, but I don’t have my laptop so I’m commenting on my iPhone which I’m sure you understand is much more difficult. NO PITY. I’m grateful for all the tremendous strides the researchers and scientists have made regarding (MS) treatments and medications. I’m also BLESSED with my amazing husband of 38 years, our wonderful grown children their darling spouses our 2 precious granddaughter’s and our 1 month old HEALTHY BABY GRAND SON. So I can’t complain because I’m still able to walk with my can or walker if longer distances and a wonderful longer life expectancy diagnosis. Just 15-20 years ago I probably would’ve been in a wheelchair already with a diagnosis with a shortened life expectancy. So I’m so grateful and blessed 🙏🏼. God Blessing’s To All With Much LOVE ♥️ and RESPECT. Remember just smiling and showing kindness today to a stranger could.maybe change their day or how they’re feeling but I can assure you it will make you feel better without question.,
Fredrika and Kayembe, toooo wonderful! Love how she swings him up right behind her head, best place to ride. Check out Kayembe’s smile and SPECTACULAR eyebrow tufts at 5:11!!! What a great footage you caught! thank you for sharing this beautiful family. It’s my first time watching this troop, so I need to catch up with names and etc.❤️
I believe that answer is yes. I attended the tails and cocktails presentation at the Cleveland Zoo in April. It seems the entire zoo staff were surprised that Fredrika assumed the role of mom minutes after Nneka abandoned him after birth. The surrogate role has captured the attention of zoo keepers around the world.
Update to my first reply, I learned that while there have been other foster/surrogate moms, per the zoo…this is the first time that a gorilla has fostered a baby gorilla on day 1.
The incident between Freddie and her baby's kidnapper is a good illustration of why fathers are needed in the home. I have 4 sons. They grow up quick, and get bigger and stronger than mom pretty fast. Moms need dads for backup with the kids (among other things) and kids need dads for examples and security.
Peace through Strength. Watching a Silverbacks is Amazing. If things got out of hand, one or both could have been seriously hurt. Daddy said "Not on my watch"
I believe Fredrika (Freddy) is the highest in hierarchy of the females. I say this because …The alpha female is usually the oldest, the female that has been with the silverback the longest, and spends the most time with the silverback. Fredrika seems to spend more of her time near Mokolo than the others. While Kebi and Fredrika were introduced to Mokolo at the same time, Freddy is with Mokolo the most. Also, when Kayembe is fed by zookeepers it is Mokolo and Freddy that get treats and not the other females.

Kayembe was the first baby gorilla born in the Cleveland Zoo’s 140 year history. A group of zoo professionals create a Species Survival Plan for each animal in zoos in North America. You can't hear the gorillas because that annoying music. The music spoils the entire video. After 2 or 3 videos with that music you don't want to watch any more videos. They become irritating and annoying and I have to give it a 👎 because of the music.
1). I suppose you could turn down the volume. 2). When the gorillas are inside you cannot hear them because they are behind thick glass windows, unless one yells at another one , I’ve seen that maybe 5 times in two years, 3) when the gorillas are outside you have crowd noise and you can’t hear their grumbles, that is rather soft. Sorry you’re disappointed with that. I’ll even go in and remove the music on a few videos. That was when I first got started - learning as I went along. Have a nice day.

At some point will Kayembe realize the other female gave birth to him?
In my opinion, he will never know. It’s not like there are any agencies to help them. And I don’t believe their ways of communicating can do that.
I wish there was natural gorilla sound instead of the annoying elevator music is there a way to get rid of that?
You can turn down your volume. This zoo does not have any speakers to allow guests to hear any vocalizations from the gorillas.
