Thank you so much for sharing! It is hard to find any informational videos about being a female applying to a service academy, and this video was such a breath of fresh air. I am in the same boat as you when you were applying for nominations. I am a high school senior with a 4.2 GPA but a low ACT and SAT score (I will be retaking both tests until the deadline; I'm actually taking the ACT tomorrow, lol). For the CFA I maxed out pretty much everything except the mile. I also am involved in many extracurriculars while holding leadership positions and my volunteer hours are up to par. I am mainly anxious about my test scores affecting my chances of getting appointed, but hearing your story made me realize that they really are looking for well-rounded individuals. Also, I wanted to ask how your experience at NAPS went and how that transition was to the academy. I 100% will be attending NAPS if that is what I am offered, but the prep school is not talked about much, so I would love to get some insight on that.
Oops I forgot to add that I got a 26 on the ACT in Feburary and I'm hoping for a superscore of atleast 30 this time around! My SAT score was around the same as my ACT as well.
Yup! Don’t stress too hard and consider how competitive your area is as well. I can try to make a video in the future but firstie year is busy at the moment!
My congressional interviews were similar to yours! My first one was super scary and the other two were not. The biggest one I did had ten people on the board but they were great to talk to.
I had an unintentional interview at my gym. I can’t remember what political position he held but he offered to nominate me. Ended choosing a state college but OCS is still in the future.
Sorry you lost Herndon!!☹️. My son is in Plebe summer right now. He has not been able to celebrate anything. High school graduation, getting in to USNA, real I-day, now no Plebe parent weekend. It is looking very likely we won’t see him until Christmas with all the COVID lock downs. Keep your head up and like I told my son...”Your in (USNA) and your there, that’s what matters!!”
My school doesn’t even have sports since it’s an early college, but I’m trying to compensate for that by being a body builder and getting as shredded as possible 😂
This is such an awesome video, so so helpful!! I’ve been told by so many people that being in cheer isn’t very desirable to service academies, so I’m glad to see someone who was in cheer attend the Naval Academy! Also when would you recommend starting to talk to blue and gold officers? I’m currently a sophomore in high school.
Hey girl! Ideally a BGO will reach out to you the summer before your senior year but if not you would probably need to go to the admissions website and ask in an email who your regional BGO is. And there is no one activity that the academy dislikes- it’s just how diverse your extracurriculars are! Do what you wanna do! I know plenty of girls who have only ever cheered and still do at the academy.
Hey Molly, Im a junior and really want to go to Summer Seminar but am afraid I'll get rejected because for the past 2 years I've been applying to the summer stem program at USNA I got rejected both times. I don't know what I need to have in my application to be accepted, could you give me advice on how I can better my odds at being accepted to summer seminar? Thanks!
I’m a junior in high school. Leadership wise I’m president of my school’s Latin club and I’ll be captain of the fencing team senior year. I just joined the Boy Scouts. Obviously this is subjective but am I at least on the right track in that department.
Helly molly great video! Do you think that it matters to submit the nomination form earlier than a few days before the deadline (which for me is October 31). I'm asking this because my SAT rn from last year is 1290 and I'm taking the SAT again this September 26. So I would like to turn in my SAT score from the test I will take on September 26 but I am worried that I will turn the nomination form with the updated score only a few days before the deadline. I'm worried my congressperson will have a bad impression of me because of how late I turned my form in. Love to hear some feedback. Thanks!
walnut ash hey turn your packet in and then simply email your new score to the office when you get it, and in the email just explain that this is your newest updated score. They can come separate as long as the initial package has the old score at least. No biggie
This video was so helpful! I am currently a senior and I am going through the application process right now. I have already applied to the Congressman in my district and in the process of applying to the senators. I noticed you talked about connections a lot; however, I don’t really know of anyone. I was wondering if you would be able to be a person that I can talk to if I have any other questions and just to get more knowledge about the Naval Academy and the interview process.
@@mkchap so I just did my interview with my bgo I'm curious to see if I get accepted in April he complimented me on my fitness so that's good I guess thanks for your help BTW
This is one of the best usna videos I have seen ! Question when should I start my application for nomination I just started my junior year and don’t know where to start
Makayla Ruth go to your congresspersons’ websites and they should have an academy nomination tab that tells you the due date and when the portal opens. Most of the time itll be due around october or november of your senior year. Portal prob opens in the summer time after your junior year. If there’s no info on it, give them a phone call and ask
Hi Molly! Thank you so much for the time you put into this video, it’s very informative and nice to see from someone who went through the whole process. I’m a junior in high school now and class of 2022. I’m interested in the academy for women’s diving. I picked up on what you were saying about connections... how did you start regularly emailing the admissions to get them familiar with you? I hope you see this comment, and if you have any direct advise on how I could get involved with them I’d really appreciate it! (Or just more on how you did what you did)
I asked my blue and gold officer the name of my regional admissions officer. Then every month or so, I’d send them a quick update on things like alumni I’d met, leadership positions I picked up, volunteer work, results from big spring track meets etc. Just keep the emails concise and only send them when youve built up a significant amount of items on your resume
So I’m in 8th grade and I found that USNA is the only place I see myself in a few years. I really wanna work hard in highschool years so I’m glad I know this in advance. Do they accept home scholars? Nobody made a video on being a home scholar and getting into USNA.
I heard that you must play a sport in Naval Academy, I played a sport and was a 2x National champion. This sport isn’t in the Naval Academy but, I did track. How does sports work at the Academy?
You do have to play a sport at either an intramural, club, or varsity (NCAA) level. During plebe summer this will be introduced to you. What sport did you do? There may be a club version of it or a similar sport
Molly Kate, I competed as a Artistic Roller Skater. Like ice but on roller skates. I ran track and could do track or soccer. I have very little experience in soccer though, I just like to play.
Rahul Parekh very cool. Thats unique for your application for sure! There are plenty of sports here you will find one you like, and probably several you never even thought about before.
Hello!! I am a military child whose father is currently in the navy, I have a few questions. 1. Due to being assigned new duty stations will leaving certain programs such as varsity wrestling, USNSCC, and AJROTC have any effect on applying? 2. What kind of connections should I have and how can they help me? (Being a navy child, I have met many sailors and marines who have attended the USNA.) 3. What can I do to work on SAT/ACT scores? 4. What credentials would you consider important when applying gpa, clubs, etc? 5. Is there anything that will severely hurt the chance of being selected?
- it is a military college with a selection board of service members so im positive they understand your situation of having to leave ECAs - your greatest connections lie in high ranking officers if possible, particularly alumnus (but even just knowing a midshipman from your summer seminar is better than nothing) -the best way to improve your scores is to simply take practice tests over and over again, theres no way around it :P - most important credentials are leadership positions and fast tracks in STEM classes -the only thing that severely hurts your chances is getting injured pretty bad the year before you enter, but dont avoid physical activity because of this
I'm a freshman(14 years old) and have high 80s -low to mid 90s, I want to get into the navy but I mainly want to go to the naval academy when I'm older. Any tips so I can get better prepared for it? Oh and can you pick what you're going to be an officer? For instance I personally want to get on a sub.
you can put it preferences what you want and depending on your standing you may or may not get it but yes- keep doing what youre doing, control what you can and don’t stress what you can’t
Great video!! Very helpful. Asking a question for my daughter.. What did you wear to your nomination interview? A suit? Or keep it simple with black pants and a collared shirt? Thanks again for making the video!! Good luck to you.
Yes, you NEED a congressional/senatorial/vice presidential nomination to get in. Prep schools can still accept you though for you to try again the next year, but the Academy will not.
Hey Molly, I’m a senior in high school right now and I know you say it isn’t too late but It sort of seems that way. Anyways I’m interested in the Naval Academy and was just wondering sort of if you even responded to these anymore.. thanks !
Collin Monesmith hey, it truly isnt too late! It isnt too late until the application is due in the winter. You cant change your resume at this point but up until you get appointed you can always add to it.
Music Man Grant it’s decently significant if sports are available to you, unless your time is devoted to being a leader in music or art or something instead. But even still, physical fitness is a baseline for the school so the fitness test will weigh more heavily if you dont do sports
