Just compression makes those diagonally cut strips not leak, only touching each other?

We haven't had any issues with the neoprene strips, but it is important to ensure the corners touch together. If there is a gap you could add in some extra neoprene foam or use 100% silicone

Are the metal screws inside the tank safe for fish?

Good question...The bolts are stainless steel so they won't rust. The rounded pan head is on the inside of the tank so there are no sharp edges.
