Not only does the season show that he’s a lot smarter than he gives off. He’s also incredibly well-connected if his ability to figure out who’s got a beef with who is something to go off of, especially when they’re in higher ranks. I swear one of these days we’re going to just find out at a ceremony or something that that man is like a lieutenant, but only does patrol because he has no interest in taking command. That or he is IA and he’s just screwing with them to see what they’ll do which would also explain his ability to skate around the lines the way he does.
I mean if he has 20+ years on the job once you’re past your probationary period it’s easy from there. You could be as lazy or incompetent as you want because it’s almost impossible to get fired from a big police force like the LAPD, NYPD, CPD etc
Anything over 15 years you are 100% safe from getting fired due to laziness at an union job. There’s a clerk at my work that’s been there since 1977. She literally does nothing haha. Plans a birthday party here and there and the rest is all knitting
I've only watched a few episodes, but he seems like the 2 "idiot" cops from Brooklyn 99. He somehow did his best work basically off screen and he was awesome. Now he's just coasting by. LOL. And I'm aware the shows are different in terms of almost everything.
@@daveb947 do they talk about "his best work" on the show even if it was in the past? B/c Scully and Hitchcock are shown to be good in the past but I get the impression Smitty always only ever did the bare minimum
@devilpistons1269 I'm just joking. But, you can't deny Smitty is entertaining. LOL. And yeah, it's weird seeing what appears to be a strangely inept officer having a long running career in the series.
@@devilpistons1269I mean the bare minimum will get you by. He never had the intention of ranking up he is just like the majority of cops who do their 20 and retire
@@FernandoMartinez-ho3dz i should correct myself: he often does less than the bare minimum and shows himself as incompetent and undeserving of his position; he's often less than a guy putting in his 20 and then retiring. sometimes, he makes things actively worse but we never see the opposite
Grey: any chance he retire soon
Tim: you arent that lucky

Smitty comes off as a joke, but when it hits the fan, you want him by your side

Only a spin-off series could answer this question
