I've been watching gardening videos for quite some time now in preparation for starting my own garden. I had so many moments watching this video where things I've heard before suddenly made sense. I love your style of teaching, I'm learning so much from you. Thank you
There is so little content on this subject and anything I find is so broad and basic. This video is so so helpful and I'm so glad I found it! A huge thank you!
Beans, tomatoes, and melons on the same trellis! 🤯 genus! Why have I always thought the same vegetable had to occupy the whole trellis! 🤦♀️ thanks so much for all your help!
Polycultures all the way! This year I am going to go even crazier and try to do peas, tomatoes planted soon after, and then when the spring peas are spent the beans can go on. I did a video before on growing fall peas while still harvesting the last of our summer tomatoes from the same trellis. Someday my trellises will collapse from the weight. 😂
Thank you for spelling this out so clearly step by step! It's so hard to start a garden - even when you have all the details - and know how to put them together. Super helpful, thank you!
This is by far the best tutorial garden layout planning for newbies that I ever seen. Thank you for this!! Even experienced gardeners like myself can glean from it as a good reminder and very inspirational! Thank you!❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing your garden and knowledge with us. I’m a UA-cam gardener too. It’s my 3rd year and ever year I try to get better. This year I’m trying intercropping/companion planting. I found your channel in my research. This is very helpful and I and so happy I found your channel because it has so much to offer. I hope we can learn more from each other as we grow our gardens and our channels!
Nice; I’m glad it was helpful! I didn’t do as much under planting this year as normal because our spring was incredibly cold for quite late-need to get back into “layering”
i'm suffering with a major case of "analysis paralysis" and this video was SO incredibly helpful to just see someone go through the logic of placement. Since this was 2 years ago did you find that this was enough food? I am also interested in canning/freezing extras for the winter and was wondering what you thought of your harvest & if you would have planted more or less of some things. Thank you again!
Hi! First I’m so glad that it was helpful. That garden size was dictated by the space we had and definitely was too small to grow much for canning. We just moved to a larger property and I’m working on a video about sizing up the growing area to produce more of our own food including for preserving. I’m landing at around 1,250 SF of bed area and then some more space for perennials like berry bushes and fruit and nut trees.
This is such a great overview, thank you! A lot of content I searched for was just someone standing in a garden, pointing towards North and it was so hard to understand. This visual helps so much!
Very practical and well explained. Thank you. I find it hard to find gardening videos that "dig" into the practical side of things as well as this video does.
Thank you so much for your very detailed explanation of the garden plan. I'm only in my first year of growing our own and want to plan it better this time. I've learnt heaps from this one video. Thank you ☺️ and yes, I agree with visual order the fact that it's a productive garden doesn't mean it can't look nice and orderly 😍
I’m so glad! Let me know if there’s anything specific you want me to cover-I try and focus on the things I wish I’d known when I started gardening but it’s helpful to know what topics people are interested in exploring. :)
I’m curious, you have a 20’ X 20’ plot. But looking from the south you have a 4’ bed, a 3’ path, a 4’ bed which is 11’ so on the North side you have space for another path and a bed. In my garden the noon sun is where your south west is so on my south east I have a path an a garage and to my south corner and south west boundary I have a neighbours garage and a 6’ high fence.to my north west I have a 20’ high conifer hedge that overgrown half my plot. My plan for this year is to cot down the offending hedge to 6’ 8” (all 60’ of boundary ). Then use 28” X 9” concrete blocks on 2 sides of the plot to level the plot and solve a drainage problem, (the neighbours garage base no drain so he ha buried it onto his gravel garden which was laid over plastic sheet) I don’t have to water that part of the garden 🙁. All sides of my veg plot is a 2’ border that is planted with foxgloves, primulas and snapdragons with some marigolds Ansell herbs . I’m on the East side of the Clwyd estuary and we are blessed with April breezes Kathleen being the latest so I’m just wondering where to put a small green house. With luck you may comment on this.
Phenomenal video... VERY informative Thank you 💯💯. I live near Macon now but I lived in downtown Atlanta back in the 90's. Everyone stay safe and God Bless you and your family from middle GA 🙏 Kendra
Great video! Very informative and just what I was searching for. I must have missed the size of your boxes. I think you said 4ft wide. How long are they? Thanks!
Bush beans can be tucked in at the base of the north side heirlooms, no reason not to, especially if you trim the lower tomato branches (always a good idea).
I’ve done with with fall-planted peas (using the trellis area left by the pruned-off lower tomato leaves) but haven’t tried bush beans. I’ll give that a shot!
I get heavy rabbit pressure (not sure if that counts) and the occasional slug, but nothing too bad as far as insect pests. I grow Little Gem, mostly…maybe that helps? 🤷♀️
For the beds at our last place I had them right at the edges and curved over the walkway, but at our new place I’m running them down the middle of the beds (they’re narrower beds)
Terrific video with an outstanding summary of your thought process! How do you reach the plants that are shielded by the trellis? I can seem to reach more than twoish feet into my beds without putting my hand down and compacting the soil
That is the one thing I would flag as an issue. I did a separate video on what we do and don’t like about the trellis, and we go into more detail, there, but short version: I can reach in three feet, and then I use the one foot strip closest to the trellis as a “pollinator plant zone” with hyssop, borage, and holy basil.
Here is was summer squash but I’ve used trellises before to grow Spaghetti Squash and this year (bigger garden) I’ll be growing Delicata and Butternut.
Lol...”people, I mean plants “ 😆 Innocent mistake. We get attached to them and talk to them, so sometimes they feel like” people “ Thanks for the informative video 👍

Ok, that makes my embarrassment at being filmed totally worth it. 😂 Thank you for the kind comment! And I’m so very glad it’s helpful.

The best videos for newbies like me, took tonnes of notes, thank you.

So glad to hear it!
Probably one of the most helpful layout videos I’ve seen. Thanks!
Glad to hear it! Being useful is definitely the goal. :)
Wow! Thank you for simplicity and detail.
You’re welcome! Glad it’s helpful
Very practical and well explained. Thank you. I find it hard to find gardening videos that "dig" into the practical side of things as well as this video does.
Thanks! I’m glad it was useful; I never know if I’m going too into the details and boring people…but I tend to nerd out. :)

Thanks a lot well presented. strategies are well explained and illustrated on the graph.
You’re welcome-I’m glad it was useful!
Just found your videos, really informative. Helps my understanding of the logic behind a garden plan. Am subscribing. Thank you.

Hi, thanks! Yup, four feet wide 👍
@@WellGroundedGardens thanks! How long are they? 4x??
@@reallifewithali Sorry, I misread your question! They were 4’x8’. :)
I just realized I have you a thumbs down for your first answer. I didn’t mean to! Sorry. 😬
@@reallifewithali no worries. I didn’t even notice. 😂

Glad it's helpful!
Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Do you prefer to have the trellis right at the edge of the beds, and grow the plants up the back side instead of planting them on the inside?
For the beds at our last place I had them right at the edges and curved over the walkway, but at our new place I’m running them down the middle of the beds (they’re narrower beds)

When you say squash what types are you growing? Summer or winter?
Here is was summer squash but I’ve used trellises before to grow Spaghetti Squash and this year (bigger garden) I’ll be growing Delicata and Butternut.
I think your peppers need lije twice as much space. 18in minimum I live in the southwest and I space 2 ft and they still run into eachother
Could be-my Italian frying types do well at this spacing but the bell types have never yielded as well for me; I’ll try spacing them further apart 👍
Lol...”people, I mean plants “ 😆 Innocent mistake. We get attached to them and talk to them, so sometimes they feel like” people “ Thanks for the informative video 👍
Yeah, we get pretty attached 😂. Glad it was helpful!
No sweet corn?
We didn’t have the space in this garden for a large enough planting block of corn, to support full wind pollination. I do at my new property! 💃
Hindi me ho skta hai?
My Hindi is definitely not strong enough for that :)
I can hardly hear you!
I know! One of our earlier videos, before we got a proper mic. It’s since been fixed. 😕
Can you please turn your volume up when you record your videos. I bought new speakers and they are up 100% volume, and I can hardly hear you.
Yeah, that was an earlier one-we’ve since bought a proper mic to catch better audio. 🙂
