I remember my first lesson trying to skate and practice skating in the rental skates 😣 When I got my own pair of skates from Polar Skate shop, it became so much easier to balance and skate on the ice and I felt a lot more stable!

I remember that too, Shirley! You progressed really well once you got your skates! Thanks for watching me almost die and leaving a comment too!
for three months i’ve been on plastic clasp rentals, my friends with actual skates have progressed way faster than me- i thought it was because i’m a bad skater but now i’m thinking’s it’s the skates xD
Somehow I got up to freestyle 1 as a kid with rentals (I guess that was my parent's decision?). But I'm starting to come back to skating as an adult and the rentals are a totally different beast. They used to be like normal skates, now they're these ski-boot-esque monstrosities with dull blades that hurt and cost 10x as much and somehow have both too much support and none at all. I think it's time to get fitted for skates if I want to skate at all.

I'd like to thank Aimée for this video. I'm a complete beginner in ice skating and I've tried to skate on rental skates several times until the last time, when the skates they gave me were particularly badly maintained, I felt my ankles were unsupported and I was too scared to move on ice. I ended up leaving after only 40 minutes with sore legs and back pain. Luckily I came across this video and it convinced me to go to a skate shop. I went home with a pair of Jackson Ultima 500s and they completely changed my skating experience!

I had a kid show up to skate school in those lake placid things, they were horrendous. The blades were like bananas, they were so much more curved then even hockey skates. Had to put her in rentals, and then she was able to actually stand up.

They're terrible! I can't believe that I tried them. But, I'm so glad that I did because I can explain better to parents now why they are not great for kids that are learning!

Very challenging to get LTS skaters to go to a pro shop. My adult students will go and sometimes I can get through to the parents of the little kids. But it's next to impossible to get the teens to understand "don't buy online" when that's been their normal. Hate the adjustable skates; the kids can't get their feet back together for learning proper stroking. Good video and comparisons!

Thanks, Sandra! It is challenging, but many of skaters that I work with do go to the pro shop!
When I went skate shopping for the first time, somehow the pro shop only had American Athletics in stock. I got them and… literally cried at my first Learn to Skate class. Broke down in tears. They felt worse than the rentals that my rink had and I couldn’t even do anything with them on at my level at the time. Went emergency skate shopping at a different pro shop and they fitted me with some beginner level Jackson’s. Now that I realize that they’re a bit too wide for me, but even with the extra width it felt like night and day and my broken dreams were mended. I still have the American Athletics 😂couldn’t return them and don’t want to pass the misery down to another fellow human. A lesson to always do your homework before purchasing skates.
Рік тому+2
A reputable specialty shop will not carry brands such as American Athletics for skates - those are usually available in sporting goods stores. Always inquire with your coach or the skating director about where to go because some "pro shops" at rinks are not the best places to go!
@ Thank you for your reply, coach Aimee! Yes, I definitely agree with everything you’ve said! I was also able to make some friends on the ice over the past few months and found out they all go to the same skate tech, so I have a new skate tech now :) Really appreciate how generally friendly people are on ice!
My daughter and I both started with those American Athletic ones. We surprisingly made good bit of progress during those first two or three months even though the blade has virtually no rocker and breaks down quickly. Then the heels started to separate from the back of the boots, on both pairs. We are now both wearing Jacksons and we had to basically start from scratch and learn how to skate all over again in the better skates. I wish I had seen this video when you first put it out, haha
One more thing I forgot to mention is that I purchased the Jacksons online too, but only because there aren't other options where I live--and only after careful consideration, foot-measuring, and reading comments in online forums.

@rjensen2586 I have a great video about what to do if you don’t have a skate shop near you: ua-cam.com/video/MqYmERC5tgk/v-deo.html please watch it because skates still need to be serviced (heat molding and sharpening)
I had listened to my coach advice and bought a new pair of skate in order to progress to the next level. The entry skate boot can only take you so far.
I went to ice rink for the first time last saturday. I was born in the southern seaside of Itay, so I have no confidence at all with winter sports, but...I married the king of the ices😂 that came from the frozen alps. After years, He convinced me to go with him to skate and for me it was love at first sight. I used rental skate and at the end of the day I was able just to stay tall on ice, move some steps/march march and slip. Not much, I know, but I am 39 and i fall only once exting😂 ( this is a big satisfaction because I was very scared and I thought I never put a feet on the ice😂😂). I had a lot of fun and I make a new friend in there, that invited me to see competition, so I'll go next saturday to watch them and maybe try again with rental skates (no pain/hurt for me but I can't judge for stability etc ) So...I have a question: as an absolute newbie, is it appropriate to buy my own skates? And when? My hubbie is pretty good and he's trying to teach me. I am also considering to take private lessons, but the rink is 1h and 30 far away from the city I live in, so i think i can go practice only once/two per week. (There is a very good pro shop in my city, so it'd be easy to try skates in person) Thanks in advance❤😊

I’m glad you enjoyed your experience! The best time to buy your own skates is as soon as you decide to make a commitment to skate! Rentals are only intended for newcomers to give it a try.
The American skates are what I use I just got new skates today but in the Americans I learned to do walts backwards and forwards crossovers and much more
2 роки тому+2
If you are getting that far, I suggest that you look into getting more advance skates that are more supportive with a good blade.
Definitely avoid boots online. I bought American boots because I wanted to make sure I would stick with skating. Two weeks in and I broke the blade. Now I use them for off-ice flexibility training. They don't offer half sizes so I had to bulk up with socks which worked. I'm surprised they stopped me from pronating, I could feel it when walking in shoes that my ankles weren't rolling inwards. They are no where near as supportive as figure skating boots but they did build up my ankle strength quickly. I noticed my fast twitch muscles getting mildly sore. The toe pick is different too. After getting Jackson boots I had to relearn everything to prevent toe scratches because American has 1 less tooth. Even forward stroking I was tripping over the toe pick.
Рік тому+1
I've heard that from a number of people about the American Athletic skates breaking in some way after only matter of weeks! Yes, the toe pick on many recreational skates, including rentals, is less pronounced and intentionally higher to tuck it out of your way. If skates don't have half-sizes, it's usually best to size down and wear thin socks. But remember that skate sizing is different from shoe sizing. Most skates run one or two sizes larger than your street shoe size. How are you using skates for off-ice training?
@ Any spin or spiral positions that require grabbing the blade. I only wear the skate on the free leg I'm training. I do the normal on-ice entrance as best I can then hold the stretch for 30 seconds, the last 10 seconds I try to sink into the stretch more. I only do these after training since they are mostly static stretches.
Рік тому+1
Just be careful if you only have one skate on as it throws off your body mechanics.
@AimeeRicca, I dont understand why anyone would use rentals. I took a private lesson at Chelsea Sky Rink to try ice skating a few years back, and the rental skates were ill fitting enough they caused my toes to bleed. Although they were great to offer extra time if I wanted it, I declined because of the pain. I honestly couldn't see how anyone could use rentals for lessons unless they got very lucky. There are plenty of good skates out there for under $200 that adults could start out with for basic skills, though I personally just invested over $400 for my first pair, due to needing the extra support.
Рік тому+1
I think they use rentals because they don't know better. That isn't their fault either! I mean it seems like that's what you're supposed to do, right? The rink offers them! Many people think that's just how skates are supposed to be! That is why I made this video!
@, thank you for these videos. I know to listen to my body enough to know that pain means something is wrong. I couldn't even get a decent balance without holding onto the boards in that private lesson.

8:52 I’m curious as to why you say concertos aren’t appropriate for beginners? I find you cannot overboot in Edeas. Is it just because of the price?
Рік тому+1
What I showed was Edea Concerto with a Gold Seal blade. That combination is not appropriate for beginners. But, honestly, why would a beginning skater want to spend that much on a Concerto with a beginner blade? Especially if that skater is a child that will outgrow their skates in about a year. While you can't overboot in Edea, Concerto is not really the most appropriate entry point for most beginner skaters.
Idk if anybody will see this since it’s a two year old video but would the riedell ember be supportive to start jumps with? They don’t have it listed on their support guide as far as I can see. On rollerskates I can do a half lutz and waltz jumps that’s about as advanced as I get so far but I’d like to learn all the main single jumps eventually
4 місяці тому+1
Ember is a recreational skate designed for casual outdoor skating. The support rating is low and they are intended for style over instruction. This is why you do not see them listed in Reidell's support guide. I have tried on the Ember and found them very uncomfortable. I would not recommend them to a skater that is interested in learning to skate.
The skates I'm currently using are Jackson Ultimas stock skates that my mom bought from amazon, they fit well and have good support for what I'm doing right now(Basic 3). I really enjoy figure skating and want to keep doing it, but the cost is a biggggg problem for me. Are the skates I have now suitable for the more beginner levels I'm currently doing? If so, when should I get better ones? (13 y/o)

I have to chime in here…….. i am a hockey player NOT a figure skater. I work at a rink and see mostly figure skaters as well as the LTS programs on the weekends. My point to this ramble is this………I will see a pair of skates to be sharpened (figure skates) and I see new skates with scuffs on the boots. I look at the blades and notice….these skates have NEVER even been sharpened. No wonder they are already scuffed, the poor kid went out on the ice with skates that have never been sharpened. Is this something that should be taught in the Learn to Skate classes before the student even gets on the ice? Not sure. I would like to hear your input. I realize that a lot of parents dont know about skates and just assume that they are sharpened at the factory. As im sure you thing this that you want the new skater to have a good first experience skating. Im not sure if you go over this in your videos, but, can you teach the parents or new skaters that yes in fact, if your not sure….have the skates sharpened for your first lesson or public session skating. Thanks to videos you make, I am constantly learning about figure skates, as well as the different runners too. Hockey skates? Yeah, Im always learning about the latest and greatest skates, now, im trying to learn about this ‘new’ field for me. I have a lot of respect for the figure skaters that come to my rink, as I see them skating a lot. I enjoy watching and learning about the different figure skates and what features they have. I know that the higher end skates cost as much or more than the custom hockey skates. I will continue to watch and learn from your videos, as some of the skaters ask questions that I want to be able to answer. Thank you.

Unfortunately, that is very common - skating on new skates that haven't been sharpened. Most programs do inform skaters and parents that all skates - including new ones - need to be sharpened. In my learn to skate profranm I send out a welcome letter to parents that spells this out. And all reputable skate brands come with instructions that tell you they need to be sharpened. For whatever reason, it still happens anyway! I can generally tell when skates have not been sharpened by the way the skater is skating and immediately inform the parents. That is true for most good coaches! That is why I bring up skate sharpening in every video - including this one - that I do about skates! Thank you for watching and commenting!
I remember my first time skating like 9 years back at aspen now it is called sportscare but same thing and the skates I used were so bad now I have gone through 5 pairs of hockey skates and have been playing hockey for a while and I see people at like free skates use these skates it just hurts me physically😂
Is this your first video from Sony and getting rid of GoPro?

Nope! I had the ZVE-10 for about a month at the time that recorded this video. I didn't get rid of my GoPros tho! I have a GoPro Max, Hero 9, and Hero 10 - I still use them all for a variety of things.
Hope this is your first video with the Sony camera and getting rid of go Pro.... Even I m planning to her a camera for vlog.. mostly walk and talk and some sitting shots... Which one do you suggest?
2 роки тому+1
I didn't get rid of my GoPros! I have 3 and use them for action and vlogging because the stabilization is better straight of the camera. With the ZVE-10 you have to use Catatlyst Browse to get the best stabilization. I mostly use the Sony ZVE-10 for sit down videos. I had it for about a month and used it for several other videos before this one.
@ thanks! So i m planning to get only one camera which should cover my vlog needs... Most of which will be sitting or standing with B rolls.. only some of which will be walking and talking... In a dilemma between Zv1 and go pro... Suggestions welcome

The video was very helpful, thank you for sharing! Sadly the nearest pro shop I could find is 4h by train from my city : ( so I had to buy online and return several pairs of skates before I found what I think is my size. Still not sure if I picked the right ones but at least I had an idea of what to look for : ) Before I had a pair of adjustables that my parents got me when I was a kid, which I now lend to my friends, most of which vowed to never get rentals again after trying them on once 😂

Have you watched my other video? Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/Byqm0R5yo7o/v-deo.html Jackson Mystiques are not very supportive. However, they would be ok for a smaller skater that is just beginning. As you weigh more than 100 lbs, you should look at other options. The rink may not be the best place to go for a fitting. Definitely ask the skating director or a coach where to go! If you are looking at Jackson, it is reasonable that a starter pair should cost an adult sized person at least $180 - $270 USD. BUT, you cannot get fitted correctly at a shop, and then buy on Amazon as every model will fit differently. Plus, most Jackson skates perform best when they are heat molded and you cannot do that at home. Also, they will need to sharpened (they don't come sharpened) and many professional techs will include heat molding and your first sharpening with the purchase! Sharpening figure skates runs $20-40 each time. So, definitely ask where the best place to go is!
Hi Aimée! I am an adult and don't really want to go through the drama of buying multiple pairs of skates. I skated as a kid and want to get back into it after a long (15 year???) hiatus. I still have a lot of stuff, I would say I'm at a basic 5-6 level, and I'm mostly interested into getting back into footwork and spins, maybe a little jumping. Would it be absurd for me to just get some Jackson Elles and call it a day? The skate shop near me includes them in their "gold package" which I'm considering investing in. Thanks for the advice!
2 роки тому+2
Have you been fitted and spoken with the skate tech about it? It depends on so many things! Height, weight, foot size, foot shape, and skill level. I I highly recommend that you speak with a coach or the rink's skating director and ask them if that shop is the best place to go - we have a few skate shops here and there's only one that I recommend. Then, make an appointment for fitting. As an adult you will likely keep the skates you get now for several years to come. The Elle may not be a long term investment, especially depending on your size.
@ sorry to come back again-- I'm realizing the proshop I'm planning to get fitted at seems to only have Jackson. I'll be moving to NYC in the fall, is it worth it to hold off and continue skating in rentals in order to have more variety?
2 роки тому+2
@@TheRacingWind I don't recommend skating in rentals for any extended period of time. They are not very supportive and the "variety" you describe lacks consistency. But, be sure to go to a good shop with professional skates techs. Have you asked anyone where the best place to go is?

Not to sharpen your skates. That should only be used for emergencies to retouch your edges. You can not create or maintain a hollow into a blade with a handheld edger. New skates need to be professionally sharpened with the appropriate radius of hollow (RoH) before you skate on them!
So, I wanted to ask your opinion, I am 40, have a bad back and plantar fasciitis in my feet, went ice skating for the first time last week, used the rinks skates and they hurt like heck, my feet still hurt. I have since bought the Jackson ultima freestyle with aspire blade. Did I make the right decision? Like I said, bad back and feet and I weigh 357 pounds also. I just wanted to add, there is a pro shop at the rink but it is small and there is no specialty shop around where I live.
Рік тому+2
It's hard for me to say. Were they recommended to you during a professional fitting? Or, did you pick them out yourself online or off the shelf in a big box store? An adult with plantar fasciitis and other complications should definitely have a professional fitting. Jackson says that the Freestyle offers moderate support for skaters more than 80 lbs. but you may require additional support. That said the Freestyle is the highest support rating that Jackson offers in outfits with boots and blades. A more supportive Jackson skate would require that you purchase the boot and blade separately.
@AimeeRicca No, I did not have a professional fitting, I purchased them from Amazon, they have not shipped yet so i can still cancel the order. I reached out to the skating rink and even on my first time on the ice, I had a professional trainer and I didn't really get the support I hoped for. I told the trainer and the ice rink manager about my concerns and health issues. The trainer didn't even help me find the right skates. I was somewhat disappointed.

There are different levels of coaches. Many are casual while others are career coaches that will help you every step of the way. It’s worth asking for a PSA Rated coach to get a higher quality professional coach. Those coaches usually charge more than more casual coaches but it’s worth it for the level of support they will provide.

All these skates look awful... think it's comparable to people who go skiing with rental boots and then don't know why they can't do anything (I'm a skier). I’ve seen that happen a lot with the heel separating from the boot! I’m glad you upgraded to Jackson!
Exactly!
How does Aimée not melt the ice every time she skates??? 😍🔥😍
I had a lot of fun and I make a new friend in there, that invited me to see competition, so I'll go next saturday to watch them and maybe try again with rental skates (no pain/hurt for me but I can't judge for stability etc )
So...I have a question: as an absolute newbie, is it appropriate to buy my own skates? And when?
My hubbie is pretty good and he's trying to teach me. I am also considering to take private lessons, but the rink is 1h and 30 far away from the city I live in, so i think i can go practice only once/two per week.
(There is a very good pro shop in my city, so it'd be easy to try skates in person)
Thanks in advance❤😊
I’m glad you enjoyed your experience! The best time to buy your own skates is as soon as you decide to make a commitment to skate! Rentals are only intended for newcomers to give it a try.
The American skates are what I use I just got new skates today but in the Americans I learned to do walts backwards and forwards crossovers and much more
If you are getting that far, I suggest that you look into getting more advance skates that are more supportive with a good blade.
@ the new ones I got were jackson artiste
That’s a better choice!
My figure skating coaches said that watching people in lessons wearing those kinds of ice skates make them cringe. 😬
Absolutely! It makes it so much harder to learn to skate when your equipment is inferior!
At least they’re better than rental skates
But you could buy a much more appropriate pair of skates for not much more!
Wish I had seen this sooner. I know of a reputable local skate shop now though!
Good to hear! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@bradleyolinger1691 You're welcome! Yes, pain means that something is wrong!
I used rental skates for my first lesson, I hate it my mom bought me some skates and loved them and finally got freeeskate ice
I'm glad you like your skates!
Oooo! Which skates did ur mom get u?
@@j4niqtz i got axel / aspire xp
8:52 I’m curious as to why you say concertos aren’t appropriate for beginners? I find you cannot overboot in Edeas. Is it just because of the price?
If the Jackson boot you have is working for you, that's great! Jackson is a brand that makes a variety of different skate models. More information about Jackson's models and how they relate to skills level is available here: jacksonultima.com/pages/jackson-fit-guide Additionally, I have many more videos about how to select the best skate for you: ua-cam.com/play/PLhIvo-BmGcaWrdSOyrzbgzakn8HtnAGqV.html&si=1Jp_wnXBGesL3ZPQ
I swear the worst ones on amazon are still better than rentals
I agree with that! However, why spend $60-$100 on the worst, when you can spend slightly more for a quality skate?
@ I am planning on buying a Jackson mystique actually, can't wait to try new movements on those :)
@@randomcubing7106 Be sure to go to a reputable skate shop and get fitted!
@ got it!
I don't know. I didn't get the ZV-1 because I wanted the ability to switch out the lens. I started using GoPros because I had one! Then I got additional ones until the ZVE-10 came out and I had the money. For some things that I record on the fly, I honestly just use my phone too!
@ thanks!
You’re welcome!
Glad it was helpful! I have another video coming out about what you should do if you don't have a skate shop near you. Look for it coming this weekend!
@ can't wait to watch it!
Never been a fan of buying clothes or shoes unless there are free returns
With skates even with free returns you need to professionally fitted
@ are they going to be molded to your feet?
They’re usually heat molded.
Can I clean my skate guards?
Yes! I put my Edea E-Guards in the washing machine! If you have rockerz or something else with springs just be careful so that the springs don’t rust!
do you see your students in jackson misquies? i am going to buy on amazon even though it’s not recommended, i just don’t have a lot of money and i’m only planning on doing skating for 7 months bc i’m going to college :)
@ Appreciate it! I'll schedule a fitting for sure.
@@TheRacingWind Excellent!
@ sorry to come back again-- I'm realizing the proshop I'm planning to get fitted at seems to only have Jackson. I'll be moving to NYC in the fall, is it worth it to hold off and continue skating in rentals in order to have more variety?
@@TheRacingWind I don't recommend skating in rentals for any extended period of time. They are not very supportive and the "variety" you describe lacks consistency. But, be sure to go to a good shop with professional skates techs. Have you asked anyone where the best place to go is?

Ok I know now I shouldn't buy skates online but they fit so I should be satisfied right?
As long as they are appropriate for your level and they don't need heat molding. They DO still need to be sharpened though!
@ that is true
What about a hand held sharpener just in case
Not to sharpen your skates. That should only be used for emergencies to retouch your edges. You can not create or maintain a hollow into a blade with a handheld edger. New skates need to be professionally sharpened with the appropriate radius of hollow (RoH) before you skate on them!
@ oh ok
So, I wanted to ask your opinion, I am 40, have a bad back and plantar fasciitis in my feet, went ice skating for the first time last week, used the rinks skates and they hurt like heck, my feet still hurt. I have since bought the Jackson ultima freestyle with aspire blade. Did I make the right decision? Like I said, bad back and feet and I weigh 357 pounds also. I just wanted to add, there is a pro shop at the rink but it is small and there is no specialty shop around where I live.
@ Thank you very much Aimee
You're very welcome!
Thanks!

Hi I want to start figure skating but im not sure if there is a skate shop in Switzerland that can get me fitted if anyone knows please help

its awful but hilarious that i know exactly which rink you’re at (im from nnj and taking lts classes there now) and i know *exactly* how awful the rentals are. i had my first class last week and i have a polar skate appt in a week and a half, i cannot wait until i can get comfortable skates and hopefully i can actually learn
Truthfully, the rentals are usually that bad regardless of the rink! I'm glad you're getting fitted at Polar Skate Shop!
boutta spend $949 on these all black EDEA skates, as a beginner... wish me luck
I wouldn't recommend that a beginning skater spend that much on skates.
the nearest skates shop to me is in another country
I’m sorry to hear that! Have you watched my video about what to do if you don’t have a skate shop near you?? No Skate Shop Near You? Avoid Expensive Mistakes Buying Ice Skates!

I bought a pair of skates online and they fit should I regret my decision? I don't have a pro shop by me anymore
I have a video for that: ua-cam.com/video/Byqm0R5yo7o/v-deo.html In that video, I explain exactly how to make sure that they fit you correctly because skates must be tighter than regular shoes to balance over the blade correctly. Also, if you don't have a pro shop near you, how will you get them sharpened after every 20-30 hours of skating?
@ that's true I'll watch more of your videos and find a pro shop
😀
Amy what brand do you recommend for knee pads and butt pads?
Honestly, I don’t like knee pads as they impede knee bend. As far as butt pads, I’ve never used them but there’s lots of brands out there - I don’t have any that seem to be better than any other
I dont have a skate shop in my country. Im not a pro but i enjoy skating once in a while. Now i want to do it weekly for fun & fitness. How to choose which brand! and size?!

What should I do if there are no skate shops where I live. Like...none haha ????
Good question!!! I actually have a video on that: ua-cam.com/video/MqYmERC5tgk/v-deo.html
Are Jackson classique good for beginners?
I'm unsure if you mean Classic or Mystique. But honestly it depends on your weight, height, age, and foot shape. It's best to go and get fitted by a Pro!
I just bought the American athletic 😅
That's ok! You can return them, right? Or you can try them and see if you like skating and then go to a pro shop and get fitted if you want to keep skating. They were the lesser of all the evils that I tried in this video!
@ thank you I’ll try them
You’re welcome!
Oh no I bought the roces essence skates😭😭😭
I have never heard of that brand until another viewer left me a comment about them on another video. I suggest that you stick with Jackson or Riedell skates that you have been fitted for. Have you watched this video? ua-cam.com/video/Byqm0R5yo7o/v-deo.html
All these skates look awful... think it's comparable to people who go skiing with rental boots and then don't know why they can't do anything (I'm a skier). Buying properly fitted footwear is SO important and I'm so happy I traveled a couple hours to the Edea official dealer here to get fitted and buy my Edea skates there. I'm a beginner skater but I don't I'll develop proper skills & technique if I have the correct footwear, same thing as skiing.
They were awful! You are smart to do that!
@ I followed your advice, that's why having experts such as yourself who are so kind to share your expertise here on UA-cam is super important! I kind of thought that maybe buying skates would be similar to buying ski boots (there are the awful ones, the "one type fits all" rentals and then there are pro boot fitters who are going to fit you with proper ski boots = not cheap), but before drawing any conclusions on my own, I researched, found your awesome channel, watched all your videos about buying skates, and I was convinced :)
I am so glad to hear that you appreciate the information!
Damn. I’m just broke as sht though… 😂😭
Beginning skates can cost around $150, depending on what you need. Many skaters save to buy them.
Thanks Coach! I will have to learn with cheap skates, and upgrade as I get to the next levels.
You're welcome!
Amazon skates? Yikes.
I can't recommend those particular skates!
