The truth is, most people who think they love the sport of boxing cannot stand to watch a real boxing match. They just want to see the most violent parts of highlight videos.
You don’t love boxing, you just want to stare at its sexy butt as it walks by.
Q&A with the coach. A viewer pines for the bygone boxing days of yesteryear when the thrill of the fight and the sweet science of pugilism was enough to keep true fans riveted ringside. But is that nostalgia for a past that never existed? Or are we looking at the history of fisticuffs through rose colored glasses?

I was at a Naval Boxing exhibition and in person, they hit a LOT harder than you'd expect from watching matches on TV. These were not even pro boxers.
Well they were amateur boxers. Amateur fighters are pretty great, especially if their in the military.
@@michaelterrell5061 I think op is just refering to the fact that even punches which may seem not very heavy on tv are harder than they're thought to be. You know how people criticize some fighters for not having KO power?

The reason Jack Dempsey was so popular was his aggresive fighting style. At the same time there was Gene Tunney, a highly technical boxer who beat Dempsey twice, yet no one remembered him, while even the casuals know who Dempsey was. He even had a fish named after him 😂. Fighting is also show bussines, so if you want the big bucks you better put on a show (of violence). Like it or not, that's what the crowd wants. I like to watch technical fights because I learn from them, but I have to admit that i do preferr a slugfest. Like the one when Lyle fought Foreman.
I love aggresion and slugfests too.
As for Dempsey and Tunney, they fought when Dempsey was past his best and not properly prepared. Dempsey won their rematched, but due to the "long count", he didn't get the nod.
I follow some old school boxing pages on Facebook and while Dempsey is more popular I do see plenty of posts on Tunney...🤔

So true, the Dampsey Roll was spectacular because he arced the punches wide so that everyone could see it. I guess the casuals eyes probably too slow to catch a good jab being launched and deem that weak and boring. Thanks for telling me about Gene Tunney though. That was such a classic match of Front stance vs Side stance, I love watching that type of match up.
The first time I re-watched Rocky as an adult with some stories to tell, the part where he yells out "Yo Adrian! I did it!" will hit you right in the feels man. Good good movie, and the world needs more Mickeys now more than ever.
Recently rewatched the saga from the first through Balboa. Can't say that I have a ton of life experience yet at 20 but man those movies have so many great emotional moments that were completely lost on me when I last watched them at 13 or 14. The movies I liked least back then (3 and 5) are wayyy better than I had given them credit for.
I feel like a guy that just learned what love is when it comes to boxing. I used to stare at its butt walking away. Now I look boxing in the eyes and wonder if I could get to know her more. Because the excitement draws me in (the violence and show) but the conversation (the skills learned and the fighters who work tirelessly for them) makes my heart thump a bit louder than before
I am an MMA guy and not much of a boxing fan (respect it plenty). But I have noticed that people who tell you they're "more into boxing" and that "grappling is boring" are almost always only watching the highlights
When swordfighting was first shown in the Roman arena most of the audience were able to fight, having been in the army for a decade or two. The arenas were small, so that the technique could be seen.
In later times the crowd screamed as baboons and leopards were crushed by elephants and hundreds of slaves clashed in naval battle in giant flooded showgrounds.
America still has decadent mountains left to climb :)
I feel the same way about a lot of MMA fans. I go into every MMA/Muay Thai/Submission Grappling match I watch mostly with the mindset of a student. I try to learn and problem solve as a match goes on. But most "fans" I see are only "spectators" who just want to see flashy stuff and will instantly boo the moment a fight shifts into grappling and those mindsets are soo irritating to me

I'm a casual fan. That said, I was always ticked off when I ordered a big pay per view that the stands were largely empty during the opening bouts. You know those seats cost thousands of dollars. If I were one of those people with front row tickets, you know damn well I would be there from the first fight to the last.
I like boxing a bit as it's effective for self defense, has an amazingly complex amount of ways to be good and is an exciting sport but if you just said you don't love boxing I would've delayed watching this, you really put an image in my mind
This was one of the most transformative things I ever had happen in Martial Arts. I had a KF coach that was a Golden Gloves boxer, and asked him what the big deal about boxing was becuase I thought it was to simple. That started a 3 month crash course in the actual art of boxing, since then I have learned more and more about boxing and find I prefer to watch super technical boxing, than most MMA match. The mid and lower weight classes are so great for this.
The biggest takeaway from Championship fighting was Dempsey's breakdown of large scale financial incentives changing boxing, and how his analysis is applicable to so many other martial arts/combat sports and varsity sports today.
Growing up, my parents were on the splits and my fondest memories were staying at a motel in Wisconsin with my dad that had Showtime. I would stay up late with the motel space heater cranked watching boxing while my dad was in bed snoring loudly. Some of those fights would go five,six rounds and it was just back and forth “oh, he landed a hook...ten...nine... AND HE’S UP. Continuing on...”
Watching in person is a amazing. I watched Erislandy Lara fight live a few years ago and he was so sharp and fast. It was amazing. He got dropped because he got a little cocky but he got up and broke his opponent's orbital bone with repeated straight lefts

I’m not gonna lie, i myself am not a fan of boxing itself, but I love participating in it.
I’m nursing a knee injury which requires surgery, but in the mean time I’m trying to learn the basics of boxing on my own. I had a ACL recon Jan 2021, the very first exercise I got outside of home rehab workouts, was a boxing fitness class. It killed me but it felt great. I was dead after the warm ups. My first bit of working out and it looked embarrassing. But I had fun!
I asked my bro in law, who joined to go to spar. And we sparred twice, and the excitement I felt was amazing. Getting hit, trying to hit. Everything about it was amazing. I lost but it’s like my depression and all of life paused for a sec. while I ran trying not to get hit. Shots straight down the middle. “Everyone has a plan, till they get hit” and boy I learned that lesson! 😂😂
But once I finally move out my family out this situation, I want to join a boxing gym. Even if it’s just to learn, after my surgery (torn meniscus) I want to spent that time learning. Boxing gives me life. In the meantime, I’ve used my gloves to punch the tree. The corners outside the bathrooms, softly with gloves lol. Even made a slip bag. Space wise, there’s none. Once I relocate, I can box for a hobby. My ultimate goal, is to compete in one Amateur match before 35.
I bought the Jack Dempsey book, based off your recommendations, and it’s helped greatly. So not sure if I’m a fan or not but boy I want to do it forever. I want to get hit. Learn to try and not get hit all while trying to look for openings or creating openings. Sorry about the long vent. 😅

What you said about liking boxing and can watch the fights all the way through is like me enjoying watching people do traditional forms. Not the wushu stuff, but the traditional forms that bore the layman.
But I’m enthralled by the precision, weight balance, focus, breathing and so on. Other people just want to see speed and jumping around.

My favorite boxer to watch live is Ryoto Murata. He’s got an incredibly efficient style of fighting.
My favorite May Weather fight is when he fought Augustus Emanuel. Weathers is just lucky there are no other boxers like that. I like watching stylize boxers that can fight and even watch the mid tier matches to see if there are any and sometimes there are. Heck, I even like watching amateur matches to see something different like once this french guy fought like old English style and seems to have something effective there even thought he lost.

I hate when people call Combat Sport boring of any variety unless it's a truly poor show by two competitors who aren't boxers and aren't athletic.
When you have two Boxers sharing a ring, it's always incredible. I think you don't understand the sport if you only like seeing the damage. There's so much to enjoy about all aspects of the art form.
I mean I even dislike "highlights" of knockouts. The majority of the time a knockout blow requires a lot of setup. Understanding the patterns, the feints, the angles, the distancing, the tendencies. All of that is so fun.
I feel it's much like people who claim to like completing puzzles. They only enjoy the finish product, but someone who truly enjoys it, is encapsulated from the minute they lay eyes on the box containing the pieces.

You've mentioned that in Bareknuckle Boxing that fighters would have to fight more intelligently when they have no gloves to protect their hands.
You have any examples of things bareknuckle boxers would be doing more? How their punches would change, what strategies they'd employ without the gloves? I'm interested to hear more, or watch more if you have any channels/videos you'd recommend
They lean on the back and hit with the ball of the thumb on hard parts and with knuckes in the soft parts.
More carefully, not more intelligently. When you have a weapon attached to each hand, the intelligent thing to do in a fight is to use those weapons to your greatest advantage. When you fight with no weapons, the intelligent thing is to procede with caution.

@@patximartel Ball of thumb? As in the side-palm part of hand? That's very interesting. I've heard of martial arts use the palm exclusively in order to avoid breaking the knuckles. Which soft parts are aimed for usually? I started a street fight against some weak thief once and broke my knuckle despite having some boxing experience.

In the UK boxing is huge. A lot bigger than the UFC. In the UK amateur boxing is also very extensive therefore there’s a lot of opportunity to get involved in the sport and actually learn it. That’s why technical boxers like usyk and lomachenko get a lot of love from UK fans, whereas americans seem to right them off as ‘average europeans’.
It’s mental that Spence jr and Crawford aren’t as big as they should be, but that seems to be because america seems to have fallen out of love with it. But then again maybe they never did.
It’s my first love and I will die on the hill that Mayweather vs Pacquiao was a great fight!
I didn't respect boxing growing up. I would say it's stupid to fight with just your hands. It was you Ramsey you and your word's that changed that. As far as UA-cam Men go I have the most respect for you and what you have to say. I have been a fan for a long time now and you don't disappoint.

The Janitor in the boxing gym I went to in manila was a former opponent/sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao. Damn, the way he moves looks so world class. Tells you, not everybody will really make it.

I think that’s true not just about boxing but about all combat sports. Everyone loves the highlight reels, but let’s be honest in the course of a real fight there’s usually some boring moments. Of course, you’ll have a large number of casual fans that are there for the highlight reel stuff. But you’ll also always have that smaller percentage of (I’m not gonna call them real fans, because that seems I keep keeping so let’s call them…) More serious fans that can appreciate the more technical aspects. For example, I do judo in Brazilian jujitsu, so I love the grappling exchanges in mma. I can tell when someone is working towards something or setting something up, and so it’s exciting. But I totally understand that to the casual fan, doesn’t look like much is happening. And that’s OK. It’s OK to be a casual fan. It’s also OK to be a serious fan. Both sides enjoy and support the sport.

Hey coach, I had the focus mitt discussion myself at my gym, although I don't have sources, one of the head coaches said the focus mitts came from Emanuel Stuart who would use boxing gloves for students to punch at and eventually they turned it into a bigger almost baseball glove for him to hold. From my own personal sources I've come across Freddie Roach said he learned how to hold pads from Eddie Futch (Title boxing DVDs). Eddie Futch is reputed to be one of the greatest trainers of all time and was the main trainer of the great Joe Frazier. Now that said, I have never seen footage or images of Joe Frazier hitting pads. I believe Freddie Roach and Freddie was active from the late 70s as a pro fighter. So I'm going to assume Eddie Futch used pads from at least the mid 70s onwards.

I'll be honest, I usually watch the highlights, but I do watch full matches live and started practicing boxing, I get hit while sparring and my lord my reflexes are non existent, and I try to avoid the celebrity boxing matches, unless they are professional fighters.

I love the techniques, the athleticism, but after learning about CTE and I just can't get behind it. I understand MMA can have simmilar bouts, but the base idea of the rules essentially being about smashing brains to win just grosses me out now.
If it makes you feel any better it is quite easy to keep your brain safe if you spare responsibility very few boxers get cute nowadays though it is still too common. In football it’s nearly impossible to be a long term professional and not have cte by comparison
Mma luckily has a lot of champions and contenders that pride themselves for fighting smart (and training smart because that's where most of the damage will come from I believe).

this is why i tend to prefer kickboxing over boxing these days, less entertainment, with only a few fighters acting like they're McGregor
This "commercialization" of boxing reminds me of this one Thai interview featuring Samart Payakaroon who is hailed as one of the greatest Muay Thai fighters of all time. He basically told the interviewer that the reason that most Thai fights these days end up in the clinch is because of gambling. Sure, gambling existed before too but there were Muay Thai styles that were much more commonplace. If I recall, a dump in Muay Thai scores a lot of points and many upstarts or champions in their local areas, when they go to Lumpinee or Rajadamnern just employ these same old tactics. Samart himself told the interviewer that to keep the spirit of the art alive, foreigners will carry the torch since they focus more on what makes the art special.
Pardon me for going off topic but for me, this is "commercializing" the sport. That and well, Muay Thai I think is now a part of the Southeast Asian games.

Happy days... I used to watch this serie too. It was great. Now they do the same with series like Stranger things. My kids get to see which kind of phone I used, how I listen to music. I'm all nostalgic when I watch 😅 What's funny is that I watched "the Goonies" as a child and Stranger things is probably taking place around the same time and one of the Children in the Goonies played a part in Stranger things. we're stuck in the 80's 😂

Hey Coach Ramsey. I was wondering if you’ve seen the latest One Pride Championship event in Indonesia. It’s alright if you haven’t, but in the first ever fight I was able to predict who won. One of the fighters, nicknamed the “Black Dragon”, was going up against a striker. I knew the Black Dragon was going to win because he had a background in grappling. Not many people, my family included, could’ve seen the Black Dragon end the fight in a first round submission. Not many people could’ve predicted that Triangle Choke he applied onto the striker. It was a highlight in my book because of how quickly the fight ended and how important it is to have a base in grappling. The Black Dragon’s opponent didn’t really have any type of defense against his grappling or groundwork because all he knew was striking. To strike your way out of a grappler is like a deer trying to escape a python; the more it moves and tries to resist the more mobility the python will take by squeezing the life out of it. What do you think about that analogy? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I like Boxing, and also Bare Knuckle Boxing (which is a more "ancient" idea). But MMA is the best 💪. In the end is a FIGHT, but with different set of rules

I haven't had the possibility to watch boxing matches since professional boxing is banned in Sweden. Since moving to Germany I've started going to MMA fights and boxing fights, everyone? No, it's expensive but I love boxing and martial arts. I both train it and watch it, the more I watch the more I enjoy it, learning the finer details in the fights. I'm more of a casual hockey fan though when my home team or Sweden plays, grab some beers and enjoy watching the games for the social aspect.

There are photos of Rocky Marciano hitting homemade punch mitts with his trainer Charlie Goldman. That's the earliest known use of pads in Boxing that I know of. I think they let the punches slide off instead of catching the punches because there's no way anybody was taking full power punches from Marciano. Especially little old Goldman. I think he said it was for Rocco's balance and punch accuracy. Maybe he kept the mitts moving targets and made Rocco use his feet to cut off the ring while using them?
In the pictures he was throwing uppercuts so maybe it was convenient for helping with that specific punch as well.

Being a boxing fan makes it more fun for me watching with casuals, as they miss some of the nuance. I'd never pay for a stadium ticket, but I watch 10-20 fights a year. Thurman v pac and Tyson-wilder 3 are recent favourites.

Also in the early 1900s professional wrestling, not the WWE style,may have been more popular sport than boxing. This is covered I the movie the Unreal History of Professional Wrestling. Thanks for the great content.
You can tell how hard they were pushing rousey in the advertisements. She was their golden goose. Nunes wasn't shown to be anything but a speed bump to Rousey's return. Dana white being upset over the loss is a given...but I guess people are starting to forget the "Rousey era".

Hey Ramsey. I am a diehard true boxing fan. Especially love reading about and watching old time boxing. People like Max Baer, Max schmelling who was a real life hero in my opinion. I could go on and on. I bought Jack Dempsey book championship fighting based on your suggestion by the way. That being said I still like to look at the ring girls. Who do you think will when between Tyson and Jake Paul by the way?

a born striker makes an incredible boxer. And if boxing was filled with Born strikers boxing would be absolutely incredible.
The problem is the coaching. Guys can be world champs and be very limited/have bad habits because they weren't taught better

Boxing is a real rose-tinted nostalgia game. As opposed to MMA, which has a massive recency bias. In boxing, nothing happening now is ever as good as what was happening decades ago. I am old enough to remember when Lennox Lewis was champ in the 90s, and no one gave him any respect. He was nowhere near what we had in the 60s, etc. Now, people say the same thing about today’s boxers compared to Lennox, who was the real deal, back in the good old days. While in MMA, this weekend’s knock out is always potentially the best ever 😂
Ah the self-deception that is nostalgia...I saw something recently comparing 80s nostalgia to the reality with all pink neon colors, and in the reality corner...a coffee-brown ash tray from McDonalds... I saw That 70's show as a successor to Happy days, and I've made the observation that the nostalgia craze always seems to go about 30 years in the past...this is probably because all the young adults about to be thirty long for that "simple time" but from the book The Kid who Ran For President: "There are no 'good old days' the 'good old days' are before you realize how the world really is"...I knew who Max Bear was before I saw Cinderella Man, but only because of The Beverly Hillbillies...

I use to be that drive by, weekend, casual fan if you will. Not anymore. As I learn more about the strategy and the technical skill involved I’m more and more interested in boxing.
Every great has their own distinct skill set and strategies that worked for them. Often times these skills or strategies are completely distinct to that fighter, and completely ignored by others.
Boxing is amazing. Minimal hand techniques, 10 or less punches and add in advanced footwork. Less is more. The footwork involved in boxing is also very technical.
Look at Thai kickboxing or western kickboxing, the hands aren’t as good as a boxer. Because that’s all the boxer focuses on. They get to that next level.
Don’t get me wrong, I like kickboxing, and mma, but the level of hands skill in boxing is next level by comparison.
Casual fans really want a tough man contest

I just like watching young Iron Mike beat up people on youtube, not pretending otherwise. Also the recent creator clash with all the youtubers punching each other was actually good perspective to what would happen if we yt comments nerds who claim they are masters of many arts would fight.

I loved boxing as a kid, my grandad was a huge fan and was a pro boxer for 20years between 1925 and ww2 where he was a Royal Marine went back to pro boxing after the war he loved it again... he died in 2008 at the age of 110 he wasn't as much of a fan due to guys "running their mouth" which he admitted Ali did but "wasn't as much of a Jackass about it" and i always thought the same, he never pulled punches never sugar coated the past just said "if your gonna run your mouth, at least have the decency to shut after the fight"

Hey, coach, as a guy trying to understand boxing more (I feel like baguazhang focuses on some principles of movement very similar to boxing concerning footwork, and I'd like some extra ). What would you say are some standout things to learn first from boxing? What kinds of footwork or movement patterns or principles should I look into while I fix my finances enough to actually attend a boxing gym?

Something I got from this is that romanticizing the past isn’t always necessary something to be ashamed of. Nostalgia doesn’t make you ignorant, it just means you’re human. Pretending to be completely unbiased, as though all of your likes and dislikes are determined solely upon their objective merit, is deceitful. It’s okay to like a movie for having pretty CGI, it doesn’t mean you have bad taste!

I don't know if this is the place to put questions but... I have a karate background and I do various striking arts such as Muay Thai and boxing. I am going through a 2 month fight camp to fight my older brother who does BJJ. I am training solo, by myself mostly. Do you have any advice or tips for this?

My brother is kind of annoying were he tries grappling with me all the time and submits me. He is a couple inches taller than me and outweighs me by 15-20 lbs maybe but always says that BJJ is a superior martial art and that karate is useless even though he has a physical advantage over me. I just wanna show him that I can fight too. It's not a fight per say, it's gonna be more of a sparring match that's semi contact. My intention is to be able to hit him with a bunch of semi contact karate strikes and keep him from knocking me over and submitting me. I just want to outclass him in sparring.
