Just like the title reads, this a a very simple aquajar build in an Ikea glass jar. The jars capacity is about two litres so its quite small. So it is not suitable to house fish. However a pair of shrimps or snails should be ok. Shrimps are better as they have a low bio load and do not need large swimming space.
I started the build by placing two pellets of ADA Amazonia supplement which came free with the aquasoil. This has high nutrient content and Nitrogen to promote plant root growth. I also added a cup full of pumice which will help provide surface for growth of beneficial bacteria. Next I proceeded to pour in ADA Amazonia aquasoil which will be my main substrate and capped it with a thick layer of ADA La Plata sand. I kept the aquasoil quantity minimum to avoid overloading tank with nutrients.
I did a simple hardscape with Lava stones and lava rock chips.
Next I sprayed the sand with water and proceeded with planting Dwarf hairgrass in the foreground.This build is based on the Walstad method hence no filter will be used. The idea is to have a heavy planting with which help with natural filtration of the water. Once the hairgrass was planted I filled the jar with water and proceeded to plant the midground and background plants. I used Cryptocoryne wendtii, Drawf Sagittaria, Juncus repens, Bacopa caroliniana, Cabomba caroliniana, Rotala rotundifolia and alternanthera reineckii for the planting. These are mostly low demand plants (except the hairgrass) and should do well in such setups. I also added Salvinia floating plants on the water surface. Once the planting was done I placed the jar under a dedicated 5W light (on a 10 hour photo period) and let it sit for a day. I did regular 50% water change for the next 7 days post which I added a pair of red Rili shrimps. They are very hardy and can thrive very well in such small setups. Again I would reiterate that such setups are not suitable for fish. A pair of shrimps or a snail should be fine based on my experience of keeping shrimps and snails in the past.

This is almost similar to a Walstad style setup and hence no filter or CO2 has been used. It is meant to develop into a small thriving ecosystem. Heavy planting has been done on purpose and they will act as a natural filter for this Aquajar. Only a pair of shrimp has been housed here since the jar is small. Fishes should never be kept in such small setups. Also this Aquajar will need regular water changes and maintenance to keep the plants and livestock in good health. Fertiliser dosing will also be needed for plant growth.

I made something similar but without the soil only sand 😊😊😊and I used a tea pot! Only two shrimp one clam and two very mini Boraras maculata fish! They are very timid and small and they don't attack the shrimps, I use them to prevent some uninvited Aeolosoma hemprichii worm! And one very very tiny snail for cleaning! The teapot is doing very well! Still required regular 3/1 water change every day tho

Before you invest in this kind of thing do a cheap/free experiment that will reveal an important flaw in cylindrical tanks, the way refraction of light actually makes it hard to see it's inhabitants/contents. Use a large plastic jar first. With some life-forms from a nearby body of water. You will see.
Very true. I have a 2g shrimp jar that's cylindrical (dirted in true Walstad fashion), and the curve of the glass most definitely interferes with visual enjoyment. Makes it difficult to monitor the inhabitants, so I have to sit and shift position or turn it a bit to get a good look inside. Eventually I'll replace that jar with a small cube aquarium of similar size, so the sides are flat instead of curved like the jar. I'll repurpose the jar as a terrarium. The curve doesn't seem as disruptive when there's no water in them.

The pumice is an interesting choice...light and good for building height, but it will float...here's hoping the sand and aquasoil cooperate with you.

El único problema que puedo decir de esta belleza de mini-acuario plantado es que son demasiadas la cantidad de plantas en ese espacio tan reducido, aunque su combinación crea realmente esa armonía, pero el problema real es que estas no se están quietas y empiezan a crecer y crecer, claro algunos dirán que solo es cuestión de podar y podar, pero bueno, habría que probar como funcionan estos pequeños experimentos.
It is extremely important to have very heavy planting in no filter setups because plants will be taking up the work of natural filtration. And yes frequent pruning would be needed for such setups and can even be an enjoyable activity for folks who love the hobby. I highly recommend the book - Ecology of the Planted aquarium by Diana Walstad.

Thanks. The plants I am using are mostly low demand except the hairgrass. If you are using similar low demand plant species you can puck up a lamp with a 5-8 watt fluorescent bulb. Any other clip on aquascaping led light should also work

i see you mention the walstad method but you seem to only use aquasoil and ada supplement. from my understanding the walstad method works very well because you use organic soil and you end up with a balanced ecosystem that need almost no maintenance. its been a while since i read the walstad book but it seems like the organic dirt is a big part of why it works very well.
You are right wrt to organic soil. The organic dirt I have access to here in the city has not yielded good results. In fact it destroyed my earlier setup which could be due to several other factors as well. My best bet right now is to go with aqua soil capped with sand. It has given some good results so far. So lets move forward and find out. It is also an organic soil extract so it should perform.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist its similar where i live but most of my local aquarium stores has tropica substrate which seems to just be normal soil thats safe for aquariums. i have several vases with tropica bottom substrate and aquasoil or sand on top. in my experience you get similar results but with potting soil vases last longer (like 4+years)

How you going to deal with those fast growing plants? i did this once but couldnt handle the plants , they grew up so fast so i eventually gave up. besides each time you trim the plant it develops more and more stem so i wonder what is your plan here . Can you help me? :)
Its good to have more plants because for no filter setups plants will help with filtration. I will have to keep up with trimming as well.
sir whenever I add fish food in aquarium, after sometime the food goes to bottom and I can't see it because of the rocks, so will the fish be able to eat this in between stones? My stones are small in size and there are alot of it, I dont think so that the fish can push the tiny stone and eat the food. so what to do? should I removed these stones and replace it with something else? please any suggestion???
Avoid gravel and stones for substrate. Have a layer of aquasoil capped with a thick layer of sand. You can read the book Ecology of the planted aquarium by Diana Walstad to know more about fish tanks and how they work.

Can this be done with only small stone chips and sand.
You will also need some soil so that plants get nutrients. You could however use epiphytic plants without soil and use liquid ferts.

You can build without filter. You will need to test your water for kh gh and ammonia and adjust accordingly. Regular water changes will be needed. Plants help with natural filtration. Cleaning, trimming and maintenance will not be an issue once plants are rooted. Thanks

Thanks. ADA product pricings are a bit on the higher side but quality is top of the line. All materials are available online as well as in local auascaping stores.

@@TerrAqua from reading the book using organic potting soil is a must and cant really be replaced with aquasoil. like a walstad vase/bowl/tank is different from a low tech planted vase/bowl/tank that uses aquasoil. you probably get similar results but the walstad method is sorta its own method where you cant change too much and still call it walstad imo.
its been a while since reading the book though so i might be a bit wrong.

@@TheUrbanNemophilist Walstad's book is EXCELLENT! Since I read that book, I've done all of my setups as dirted tanks with sand caps. Haven't had one fail yet. Truly is a wonderful read.
I'm completely ignorant about, shrimp doesn't need more space like fishes?
Experts say 5 dwarf shrimps per gallon. Invertebrates do not need as much swimming space as fishes. But space is one thing. Shrimp has a very low bioload and hence can thrive in smaller setups compared to fishes.
They can reach 1.5/2 cm so you should give them more than a gallon (about 4 litres), a shrimp tank is recommended to be a minimum of 5 gallon (about 20L) but 10 gallon (about 40L) is better to keep ph levels more easily stable.
I keep my shrimp in a 100L tank and I have 30 in there with 4 kuhli loaches (be careful with kuhli loaches, only tank breed kuhli won’t eat shrimplets) and don’t plan to get many more shrimp in there.
I’ll probably cap the tank at 40/45 but by the literati I should be able to keep around 200 in a tank my size but I don’t see how they’d like that, unless it had a shit ton of surface area and less height like breeders tanks.
That shrimp will be dead in no time
