I was pleased with the Saturn port back in the day. But PS1 version is the clear winner here.

PS1 version easily. But let's not forget this was fully utilising only one of the Saturn's two CPUs. I feel it could have done this game better had the devs known their way around the hardware.

Roberto Jaketti Right, and we're just supposed to take your word for it. I only heard of one dev who explicitely said that. But even then, it was probably because those devs were not utilising the second CPU.

Bedtime Stories so you even heard urself now from 'one' dev. Well i heard it several times, here on youtube and in videogames magazines in the 90s. Believe whatever you want.
Quote: 'it was probably because those devs were not utilising the second CPU.'
What? So now you want me to take ur word for it? Or dont you think the devs are a way more reliable source into those matters?
How can i even take you serious after that? Are you in chronic denial?
The two cpu was the whole architecture problem in the first place. Two cpu on one bus? They were never meant to work together, so good luck with that.

Roberto Jaketti Yeah, much as i prefer the Saturn that gen, it was a issue that most programmers couldn't get the most outta the Saturn. I think both CPUs couldn't access the ram pool at the same time, or something like that. Also advanced dev kits were given to devs a little late in the lifecycle. Imagine what they could've got out of the Saturn had it stayed in the console market longer. It was very successful in Japan though

Playstation version has smoother FMV, more vibrant colors, slightly higher resolution textures, transparencies (not the famous Sega mesh effect), and a somewhat smoother frame rate. Still I'm impressed how close the Saturn came considering the remarkably different and complex hardware and the lack of decent developer tools, plus that whole inexplicable quadrilateral thing. I think the Saturn was likely capable or more than we ever seen during its lifetime. To a lesser degree this is also true of the N64. I would not be surprised that if a developer were able to perfectly master and balance the Saturn's resources, that it would be able to meet or perhaps even exceed the Playstation's 3D capabilities.

This is usually the opposite with saturn games, the saturn version of mortal kombat trilogy has better resolution and audio, but alot of there ports lack. Alot of there best stuff came out in 96 97 because the programmers knew how to use the internals to code better and more efficiently with the other cpu. Saturn bomberman, trilogy, mega man x4 these are all late games and all imo look better on saturn. Saturn bomberman isnt on ps1 but its just dope as hell, one of my alltime fav games i bought a sealed legit copy and kept it mint.

Wipeout is great on both systems, but PSX has a higher and more stable frame rate, plus those super cool lighting effects and licensed music. It's the showpiece of the Playstation launch and still looks terrific. Saturn version definitely looks a bit choppier with a lower frame rate, and the transparencies are either absent (weapons) or replaced with mesh-patterns (shields). On a CRT w/RF or Composite, you won't notice the latter, but you will see the dots in S-Video.
In Saturn's defense, I will say that the vehicle handling is better, and you don't grind to a halt whenever you touch the sides of the track, but scrape and glide past. Fortunately, Psygnosis added this to the sequels.

The Saturn version is not bad considering the game is only utilising one of the Saturns two CPU's, the game is effectively using only 50% of the Saturns CPU power. It's a shame the Saturns complex dual CPU architecture was so overly complicated to develope games for.

    • @Carsonj13
      @Carsonj13 3 роки тому +1

@@clarenceboddicker6679 Oh, I'm well aware of that. This is actually a good way to play the game. Looking at other Saturn third party games (that weren't built with the hardware in mind) things could have gone a LOT worse.
Also, one thing I failed to mention is that, although it can't be seen here due to window size, the PlayStation version DOES admittedly have "full-screen dithering" while the Saturn only dithers transparencies.

What most people here who are slagging off the Saturn version haven't really taken into consideration is that its a port from the PlayStation version, which in its self is always going to create problems and differences. The game was made using the PlayStation hardware, using the best of what that hardware had to offer, porting it to a machine with different hardware architecture isn't going to give you the same result.
Take a look at Exhumed/Powerslave, the Saturn version was created first, (using both CPUs) and is excellent, Labotomy Software decided NOT to port the Saturn version to the PS because of the differences between the two machines architecture, the PlayStation COULDN'T do what ghe Saturn was doing, the PS version ends up being a very different game because of this and unfortunately also isn't as stable as the Saturn version with some pretty bad texture warping.
Its proof (like with many other titles) when a game was built from the ground up on Saturn, and by people who knew what they were doing, those games really show the Saturn is more than capable 3D machine.
I can't remember what developer said it, but there was a quote saying "if you struggle to program using 3D on the Sega Saturn, then your not a very good game developer"

Power Slave has alot of 2D objects and the VDP2 is drawing the sky and weapons. Thus PS1 will always be in disadvantage in games with 2D stuff. In fully 3D games, however, Saturn just can't compare, especially in framerates. Tomb Raider was created on Saturn, but runs better on PS1 because it's mostly 3D with very limited 2D objects.

Sorry but that's a weak argument. the Tekken, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil games (to name but a few) are all heavily reliant on 2D images, and you'll find 2D in just about every PS1 game you play, it's just produced differently.

@@RetroGamesBoy78 I don’t think he was saying that the PlayStation can’t do 2D, but that the PlayStation can’t do 2D as well. Street Fighter Alpha 3 shows in the right hands the playstation can do a great 2D beat-em-up too, and I think that the Saturn needs an extra RAM cart for most of its fighting games doesn’t say much of it base power either. But still overall The vanilla Saturn did 2D better than PlayStation and when developer knew how to use the hardware properly they could make games the PlayStation would struggle to handle. I think powerslave is a good example. I would argue DOA 2 as well. As it runs in the Saturn’s high res 60fps mode like VF2. They basically had to remake a different game on PS1 when converting that.
Resident evil and Tekken aren’t doing too much in the 2D department. Tekken usually has a plane mode 7 floor and a flat BG. With nice 3D characters. Tekken never seemed to push the PS1 technically. It seemed like great art direction and gameplay at work here. Resident evil is just basic 3D characters roaming around a jpeg. Good art direction but not much complexity.

@@sloppynyuszi but the problem I have with that original argument is those 2D Sprites are not taxing on the PS hardware at all, they are very simple animated textures drawn on to a flat polygon, yes Doom runs on an entirely different engine, but there is no great problem for the PS when displaying several enemies at a time there, and surely displaying a fully 3D model would always be more taxing, so I really can't understand that argument.

I didn't realize that my old Saturn's video playback & frame rate was so much more choppy than PS1's, side by side it clearly constantly stutters a bit as if it was running at slower frame rate or constantly swapping out of CD buffer or something, and the FPS drop is quite large probably in the 20-24 range & visibly slows down into mid teens in certain turns, weird. When u play the saturn u don't notice it, but side by side it quite shocking how PS1 frame rate is rock solid, even though Psygnosis developers said its locked at 30fps it looks smoother than that... ok this is now bothering me & i gotta get my cousins old PSX and play this thing on it.

In my opinion, the PlayStation version is clearly better. I am unbiased and like both platforms for various reasons. I've recently become aware that the Saturn is actually capable of slightly better 3D performance than the PlayStation (which as far as I know was never actually realized). I owned a PlayStation, but I've always been curious about the Saturn. I would have liked to own both but Saturn was too expensive. It seems to me that on this particular game the PlayStation has a higher framerate both in-game and in FMV, and the PS version seems to be running at a higher resolution. Also the lack if hardware transparency support on the Saturn is very evident here because we have those awful mesh shadows which were so common on the system (and the genesis as well). Some developers went through the effort of coding software transparency, but most chose not to. If Sega had made a few different engineering (and pricing) decisions with the Saturn it would have done much better in North America. Still I like to see how close the two platforms can come in practice. I think the closest comparison I've see was the first Tomb Raider game. The Saturn's biggest advantage in 3D is the drastically reduced texture warping on the system in comparison to the PlayStation. The Saturn will always be my biggest historical gaming curiosity, and had I been a rich kid, I would have bought one for sure. Can't have everything, lol.

That's the thing about opinions, everyone has one. While I respect and appreciate your right to say I'm "completely wrong about the Saturn", I would recommend you check out the PlayStation vs. Saturn episode from Game Sack and maybe educate yourself a bit more on the subject. On paper the Saturn is more powerful than PlayStation, most notably with 2D but even with 3D. The catch is you need a team of coding geniuses to make it happen. Due to a number of factors, not the least of which was marketing issues, it was never worth it to developers to invest that much effort for minimal payout as opposed to making their product for PlayStation.

    • @Nexus9_KD6-4.8
      @Nexus9_KD6-4.8 7 років тому +1

Absolutely agree. While the 2 CPU's vs 1 CPU in the PlayStation is an impressive spec, it is somewhat crippled by the fact that the two CPU's share the same bus. This means that both CPU's have to rely more heavily on their on-board caches and rapidly juggle which CPU has memory access for both the be used effectively. Because of the issues coding this into software, a lot of games simply ignored the second CPU. This is because the second CPU and one of the GPU's was added at the last minute when Sega learned the PlayStation specs. My guess is they didn't have time to completely re-engineer the motherboard and had to stick it on the same bus. Those with the programming Kung Fu needed to balance the two CPU's though could do great things with the system.

  • @orderofmagnitude-TPATP

Sony was mass market and a lot of crud was released, saturns flaw was its complex programming. On paper it was higher spec. It could do transparencys. Panzer dragoon zwei and saga and sonic r and sonic jam show that. This version of wipeout is not as good as the psx version with lower frame rate and scrappier textures but it wasnt utilizing the other processor, which was a common theme. To prove my point check out powerslave/exhumed on psx to saturn ~ a 3d game, and duke 3d... then we had quake which you could literally see the saturn break into a sweat. It had a dedicated 3d chip and 2d chip, and it was way better on 2d and it had more ram so faster loading. And it could do higher res than the psx. Programmers are lazy tho . Psx ran on c++ and would you rather create a game with a quick turn over for the pay? Or grind like fuck for the pay? ~ most playstation titles on saturn were ports not built ground up! It is a case of quality over quantity with the saturn, vf2 and last bronx really showed how fluid and vetsatile it was to emulating a $10k arcade board (model2) wheras tekken etc is pretty much psx hardware (even tekken3 was just over clocked psx hardware wheras vf3 was again a model 3 cutting edge $18k board! ~ but as an arcade operator could you afford one? Most just rented) anyway so an easy ride once again for programmers with psx. Psx had some ace games and the better versions of a lot of things from developers like psygnosis. But we got capcom. Both consoles are note worthy... especially saturn in japan ~( i do wish they did arcade sega system 32 conversions tho) i had both, but the saturn has certainly aged better and become a cult classic and you will pay much more for one today than a playstation. As far as this side by side comparison goes with wipeout ~ the psx version is better. Same story with destruct derby, die hard trilogy, and wipeout 2097! ~ advice. ... get a dreamcast and run 'bleem' ~ that plays psx games on your dreamcast and ups the graphics even further.... hope you enjoyed my novel.

I used to own copies of this game for both consoles and unfortunately, this was one of many examples where the developer didn't take full advantage of what the Saturn had to offer.
Unlike the PlayStation, the Saturn used 2 processors but because it was very difficult to program for, using both, only 1 of the processors was utilised, showing this lagging effect that was seen far too often.
If the Saturn was made easier to make games for, I think the console wars may have gone a little differently.

I played both versions to death years ago, I had the Saturn version, by bro had the PlayStation version. The PS1 had the best graphics and the higher frame rate... and yes, the professional music artist tunes, but, the Saturn version I found the crafts looked like they were actually travelling at the speeds displayed. I too believe the Saturn version to be the most controllable, which is most noticeable while playing the Silverstream track. Last thing, is the music... I like all the tune from Orbital, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, but, I did preferred the tracks used for the Saturn version and was rather disappointed that they didn't appear on the audio CD release :(
Overall I do prefer the Saturn version, not because I'm a Saturn fanboy, though I one at that, I just found it a better playing experience, my bro did to, often I found he'd gone in my room and played on it whilst I wasn't around, even though he has his PS1 version.

This really isn't a great comparison. It seems like it's down to how-much-of-a-sh:t the devs gave (or were given the time) to do this game justice. A good comparison would be Tomb Raider as it was originally intended to be a Saturn exclusive, but did very well on the PlayStation (and admittedly still looks better imho). The argument that the Saturn doesn't do 3d is nonsensical. The base polygons on the Saturn were different in that they had four points instead of the new-at-the-time standard of 3 points. Ported games had to accommodate for that by squeezing one side of the square to a length of zero and create a triangle that way. Interestingly, this is why you rarely see semi-transparent polygons on the Saturn. It can be done (as it absolutely is done with Sonic R), but if it's that triangle-hack of squeezing a square, you get some really odd gradient transparency issues on the model when it comes to lighting and textures. Also, the argument about the dual-chip architecture being more powerful than the single-chip Sony, sure it is in straight arithmetic. But that's not the entire picture. Both chips had to take turns grabbing data from the shared memory. Speaking of memory issues - Nintendo really shot themselves in the foot in a bad way. It was literally too small and just not enough to hold image data for a decent texture - hence why every damn N64 game has that ridiculous amount of blur (or very small, tiled texture) everywhere. Literally every game. Blurry af.

The wall collisions on the Saturn seem to be less punishing than on the PlayStation but in graphics, the PS1 easily beats the Saturn. Then again, most games on the Saturn didn't optimize the hardware to its fullest so it makes sense why there's a definite performance difference. Video encoding is also different for each platform which effects the ability the Saturn to display the same butter smooth frame rate of the PS1 intro.

I absolutely ADORED the Saturn port back in the day - it was my first WipEout experience. However, time has proven that it is indeed an inferior port. Still impressive, but nevertheless inferior. It's quite hard to go back to these days because of that 20fps framerate (and lower on PAL systems), I think all the WIpEout games are harder to go back to after BallisticNG... the higher framerates in that game and the fan back-ports of all the original courses and custom soundtracks almost make the older games redundant, since the gameplay is identical & improved, even. I do wish there were mods to make the menu's in BnG look like Wip3out though... but that is a small niggle.

Like most ports back in that age, the Saturn one is the inferior one, you can clearly see how slow the refresh rate is, probably not even a 15 fps average, which makes it much less playable, as you can see by the video, the player is having trouble controlling the ship - which is due to low fps and eventual response time cause by it.
If you think this Saturn port is bad, check wipeout 2097 (or XL in the US), it's an even worse port compared to the ps1.
