I worked on this movie as a camera assistent. Shot in my home country, it was a true honor. The crew visited more than 1000 locations in and around Amsterdam that I only got to see a glimpse of. Bravo 🙏
Ziet er goed uit! Y’all did that 🙌🏾
A24 and Steve Mcqueen. You hit the jackpot.
Beautiful shots
I just watched it, what you guys pulled off is incredible, some of the low light work was pretty mind blowing. How many cameras were in your package?
@@bigmilkhog6440 The period that I worked with them we rolled with just 1 camera and a crew of 6 people. They worked almost 1.5 year like that.
They included my high school as the “schools” part ! And an interesting thing about this school is that its named after gerrit van der veen . The leader of the resistance against nazis. Its a monument at this time. This had to be on purpose. Such great film making.
It’s so rare to see a documentary shot on film now, this makes me so happy

It’s not on film it’s just digital with a slapped on 4:3 aspect ratio like usual A24 films.
@@shiven513 I mean a) it is shot on 35mm b) you can’t really slap 4:3 on because 4:3 is most times the native aspect ratio so 16:9 is a crop of 4:3

Was fortunate enough to see this at Cannes FF in the presence of McQueen. It's very striking, with a certain undertone of urgency relating to the complacency surrounding how communities are treated today. Very impressive, and very touching.
I have Not (yet) seen it however that Summation Alone should be Nominated for an Oscar.. 👏👏👏
The main question I have is did you feel the runtime or was bothered by it?

Im from amsterdam, i saw so many spots i grew up in. Im so excited for a24 to cover my beautiful city.
I was so happy to have visited Amsterdam in 2019, as a New Yorker it was such an experience to have left the continent for the first time and for that to be the first European city I visited
Great choice! Wonderful city.

Amsterdam isn't a real European city, it is made into a big tourist theme park. Hopefully you visited other cities as well.

So glad to see A24 doing more movies on film! This is the way to go. I hope it’ll be feasible for you to release prints in the future.

When I was in Amsterdam last year (as a American visiting my German friend, crazy) the Anne Frank house was booked so we got the next best thing a tour of the Jewish History and Anne Frank. I can’t quite remember the name. There we were walked all around the city and shown the cites where memorials now exist and where ppl lived. Heartbreaking.
You've been in the Jewish quarter?
This looks insane! I’m Dutch and there’s so few movies set in or from our country, especially since all our best directors and artists immediately move to America, so its really interesting to see a whole A24 movie about the Netherlands? But also as someone who studies history it just remains so vital that we teach and inform every generation of what happened. There’s already reports of how few young people are really properly taught about the Holocaust, and with the internet thats not gonna get better. I mean the fact that some ppl see WW2 as irrelevant or just distant history is insane to me, the way it plays a role to this day, and the stories I remember as a kid from those who actually lived through it.

This reminds of Chris Markers documentary Sans soleil and Michael Haneke’s 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance, this looks great!

Boo I'm going to watch it at home & zoom it in.. 16.9
I'm assuming you're being sarcastic but all films were in 4:3 before the studios decided to start doing widescreen to compete with television. It was a gimmick, and was intended for use with films that had big sprawling landscapes. 4:3 is a better ratio for intimate close ups and other framing. Where can we watch this?
Does anyone know the piece being played? It is beautiful.
3 Etudes Opus 104 No. 1 in B flat minor, by Felix Mendelssohn
Thank you!!
Let's see if this movie tells the truth. The trailer paints it like it was JUST the Nazis, but the fact is that the Dutch were big time collaborators in that effort, just like the citizens of many of the European countries during WWII.
And Zionists were collaborators with Nazis since 1933. That is how Haavara agreement came about.
I scrolled down to find this comment. Guess you are also predictable.

Three tickets for me, my wife and my wife’s son for the newest A24-produced, genre-redefining, trope-subverting, atmospheric, dark and eerie, emotionally draining, gut wrenching, aesthetically heavy craft by post-horror auteur with an arthouse edge, dread-inducing, suspenseful build up with strong character development and gradual feeling of escalation, bone-chilling slow burn with “say more with less” approach and soul-shaking, blood-curdling, skin-crawling and nerve-wracking exercise in persistently looming dread where tension and anxiety permeates every frame as movie reaches its nail-biting, jaw-clenching and paranoia-inducing final climax, free of any cheap gore, cartoonish CGI or infantile jumpscares horror film, please.

“This is a coffee shop…. Nazis came in and brutally murdered everyone… demolished”

Why not 4:3? All films used to be in 4:3. Do all photographs or paintings need to be rectangles and not square?

This looks like Shoah. Telling the stories from the past but showing images of the places mentioned now. It’s also 4 hours long. I think Shoah is 5 and a half.
I'm confused as to the subject. I thought this was about the German occupation in WWII. I don't understand all the modern video.
Seriously? I've not seen this film but it's pretty obviously a comparison between Nazi's extermination of Jews, and the alleged opposition by some in society against newer social developments such as gay marriage, mixed marriages etc etc. It's in the trailer.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out it parallels what the Jewish people are doing do the Palestinians. It's literally what this movie is about. The abused become the abusers.
This is one of those films that will surely get funnier every year for those with pattern recognition. Prescient in ways it does not intend to be, it will soon be labeled wrongthink by the very people it panders to. We are still at the point where documenting reality is deemed acceptable, but this time is rapidly coming to a close.
Does this partly explain why the Dutch colonized Indonesia for 350 years?
It has a scene addressing this actually.
I loved Steve McQueens SHAME and HUNGER
It's crazy what Jewish people went through, and they have no problem doing this same kind of crap to Palestinians
Not true. Typical brainwashed fake news. Go visit Israel and see the truth for yourself, which is quite the contrary.
I can't say the trailer encourages me to see the film. I remember reading a book about the architecture of the holocaust which described how a victim invested locations with hope or fear as he saw from the attic of his hiding place. It was quite compelling. But that was achieved by a moving almost poetic narrative and one's own imagination, with just one polaroid of the scene in question provided for the reader. I can't see how this can be done with film clips by a non-victim 84+ years later in a world so totally changed the that the events of 80 years ago can barely be comprehended from a social history perspective never mind the menacing fear of evil, unless it is in the hands of say Andrey Zvyagintsev who made Leviathan the Russian film (2014) which captured the over-bearing injustice of modern Russia without referring directly to it. Maybe Steve McQueen has the same talent?
Estou mega ansiosa para assistir esse filme ❤️😍
A24 greatness once again
I'm so exited to see an A24 that takes place in my country, can't wait to see
The A24 runs from Clapham to Worthing. Can't believe it justifies a movie
I'm so confused by this trailer, is it a doc with footage from present day using narration about the 1940's??
Does anyone know the piano piece in the second half of the trailer?
Is there nothing about the Canadians who took back the city? There's literally an entire park dedicated to the Canadian soldiers who defeated the germans in Amsterdam.
Those very Canadians who later sheltered the surviving members of the SS "Galicia"?
@@shipovnik89 more than 7,600 Canadians died liberating the Netherlands. Like all wars, there is enough guilt and sacrifice to go around for all parties involved.
Dutch national archives list approx. 300,000 Dutch nationals accused of collaborating with the Nazis.
More than 65,000 Dutch nationals were tried as Nazi collaborators.
The archive opens to non-academics in 2025.
The Netherlands had the highest death rate among Jews in Nazi occupied Europe. Nederlanders helped do that.
Over 20,000 Dutch served in Hitler’s military.
I watched the films of happy, cheering crowds welcome the marching Nazis into the Netherlands.
Aalsmeer, where I stay, was very pro Nazi.
As you can see, there was plenty of home grown horror during that time. But even with all that guilt, I believe the world will be better place with all the Dutch, Canadian, and German children growing up without the sins of their families.
Never forget the past. It’s so strange for my generation to think that our grandad had to fight and hurt each others. Yet today we are all united in peace and we can trace and learn from each others. Knowing the past makes you appreciate the present ❤
In listening to the narrator's (Cate Blanchett?) description of occupied Amsterdam, I couldn't help but think she could easily be talking about occupied Palestine. What a sad irony....
not cate blanchett and not irony (it would be parallel)
That's coincidence, not irony. If a fire truck shows up to a fire and then the truck catches on fire, that's irony. If a second fire truck shows up and catches on fire, that's a coincidence (although the whole trucks on fire situation would still be ironic).
@@Eli_B3000 It is irony because the same crimes suffered by the oppressed are now being repeated by them in palestine. The oppressed repeating history by becoming the oppressor is ironic since you would expect they would have learned from history.
@@ditin4149 That's not what the comment said though, it said that the documentary is a parallel to the current situation, which isn't ironic, it's a coincidence. The war itself between Israel and Palestine has situational irony, sure.
Reminds me of the film Cameraperson
This is longer than Lord of the Rings!
what is it about though?
A person just threatened me to make me lose my job for responding to a user, who said that people who supported the Palestines were NAZIs and that the movie drew a parallelism into what’s going on now; to which I said that the parallelism to me was more in line with what the estate of Israel is doing to Palestinians. In no part of my message I said anything against the Jewish community. I’m talking about politics, not religion nor ethnicity.
Interesting that the first response was a threat. Very interesting.
If you honestly believe that Israel's self-defense against Hamas, a terrorist organization dedicated to genocide, is somehow comparable to what the Nazis did, then you're either misinformed or prejudiced. By the way, Nazism is all about politics. As for the person who threatened you, threats have no place in the civilized world. Discussion does.

The movie actually features a scene of a free Palestine protest, you clearly haven't seen the work . One of the central ideas I think is to impress upon you that these kinds of things can easily happen again. The film stands in solidarity with all oppressed people and that includes Palestinians. If you haven't seen a film maybe it's better to not say anything about it, because in a very literal way you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
Naturally the Palestinians excel at blaming Israel and the rest of world for their circumstances. Of course it’s everybody’s fault but their own. They’ve been given enough money to have created a country as rich as Monaco or Singapore, yet they prefer to create terrorism and destruction with every opportunity. They don’t want peace or a state, they want mayhem and jihad.
