The actual birthday song is trademarked and owned by a corporation. Don't remember who, but to use it in TV and movies, you need to pay a licensing fee. Thats why restaurants normally have their own version, so they don't get sued.
Trademarks and copyright are two different things. Secondly, it was copyrighted until a couple years ago when Warner Bros was sued over the rights to the song. Since they couldn't prove that they owned the song, it officially became public domain in 2017.
A couple people claimed to own the copyright and registered it and demanded payouts from every show and movie that used it, but the courts finally pulled the copyright saying it was baseless and unenforcable.
Up until 2017 (+/-) the common "Happy Birthday" song was still under copyright, so tv shows, movies, etc had to fork over $5000+ to use it, while also listing it in the credits. Warner/Chappell had been earning $2 million a year licensing the song for commercial use. Futurama made up a generic version of "Happy Birthday" for this episode to satirize the situation.
The thing with the mutants worshiping a nuke is a reference to the original (and best) Planet of the Apes movies, where it was the second one that revealed a group of mutants living isloated from ape and human societies, and they worshiped an un-exploded nuke (which was detonated at the end of the movie).
The birthday song changed after 1000 years, though Fry obviously didn't know. Futurama has lots of small running gags like that. Like how everyone but Fry says "axe" instead of "ask".
We need more Futurama! And Simpsons perhaps! Cause since youre mostly done with South Park, this and Rick & Morty are the reactions im looking mostly forward to. And Rick & Morty also doesnt have many episodes left.

Trademark doesn't apply to staff singing it in a restaurant 😂

Futurama has some dimes. Hopefully it’s not too hard to edit/fix any copyright issues

3:46 The Happy Birthday song was copyrighted and nobody could use it without paying crazy license fees, so shows would make up their own
