Coming through South Sydney as a 21-year-old, Burgess started at 13 and then made the switch to second row, before finishing up his career in the middle again at Prop.
​​Not the new-age ball-playing Lock we see today, Burgess was more of the rough-and-tumble kind; somebody who would look to make a statement through his actions. He admitted that he was probably born a generation too late judging from the brand of football he played. Craig ‘Tugger’ Coleman also said if there was somebody from the modern era he would love to have in his side, it was Sam Burgess.
​​That’s what summed up Sam Burgess; teammates loved playing with him because they knew he would never shy away from the challenge. A true warrior of the game.
