+GeoNeilUK STV in Scotland still has to go by the rest of the UK's schedules when it comes to the weekday 6pm to 7pm period. On English bank holiday Mondays when there are shortened national and regional news bulletins, the STV News at 6 and Reporting Scotland over on BBC 1 still have to show shortened 15 minute bulletins even though it's not a bank holiday in Scotland, and when it's a Scottish bank holiday monday but not in England the STV News at 6 and Reporting Scotland still are on the full half hour bulletins like the rest of the UK. Shouldn't Scotland be able to opt out from showing the non news programme at 6.30 on in the rest of the UK to show the full half hour Scottish News bulletins when it's an English bank holiday but it's not in Scotland.

They are terrestrial channels, part of ITV and Channel 4's range of channels the way BBC2 was in the analogue era. You don't have to pay a subscription to Sky or virgin to access them. It's annoying that people class BBC2 as a terrestrial channel, but don't class ITV3, More 4 or 5 Star e.g. as terrestrial channels. There's nothing wrong about ITV putting sport on ITV4 in the same way that BBC have always put sport on BBC2. Pick TV is also a terrestrial channel, but you will not see Sky bidding for Wimbledon rights just to show finals weekend on Pick with the crown jewels rules still say it has to be live on terrestrial because as far as Sky are concerned the host saying exclusively Live on Pick TV does not have the same ring about it for them as saying exclusively live on Sky Sports Tennis. Another big tv event happened in 1969 (alongside the transition to colour and the moon landing) as well (particularly affecting viewers in the Yorkshire region) as the transmitter at Emley Moor collapsed in March of that year, leaving loads of viewers without colour BBC2 and black and white ITV. Why did they call it high definition in 1936? Because way back then in 1936 the then BBC TV channel was shown on low quality 405 line standard definition black and white TV's where TV screens were far more rounded than those even on sale in the 1970's.
First words heard on BBC 2 would have seen it closed down today - newsreader Gerald Priestland was reading an item about a bus conductress who described Asian passengers as “stinking wogs” - the news was being broadcast in picture only - when the sound finally kicked in, the first words viewers heard were the words “stinking wogs” - he repeated the news again and the item was heard in full!
The only things I ever found worth watching on Channel 5 were the American daytime soap Sunset Beach and the Canadian production of La Femme Nikita. The rest of the channel's output has always been dumbed down trash (which, sadly, ITV is now emulating)
It has never been an adult channel. It does not even provide an Adult channnel style porn service even though some of the programmes on it have an excessive amount of nakedness on them.
Just a couple of pointers if you make a 2nd video or one in more detail I used to have a book about the first 40 years of Coronation Street, and in that it says the first colour of episode of that was on 24/11/1969, and the episode was meant to feature a coach crash. But the technical failed and it wasn't until the episode after in the hospital that it picked up. And there was nearly a strike with the cameramen, causing episodes continuing to air in black and white on an occasional basis until February of 1971. Secondly, how come nothing about the ITV strike of 1979 was mentioned? Coronation Street got taken off the air for 3 months between August and November.
Channel 5 content has improved since you made this video but it's still lacking for the most part. It also had coverage issues for its first ten years due to the frequency it operated on being an issue in some parts of the country, and that they had to pay teams of engineers to visit houses and retune people's VCRs. The channel 4 introduction in 1982 was, at the time, state of the art CGI. Channel 4 were a welcome breath of fresh air at the time, being radical and bold.
Disagree with your comments re channel 5. Though I appreciate they were made 5 years ago. Today, I find that their documentary output is high quality and very interesting. I must admit, I only started watching 5 in the last few years but have to say, it is my favourite channel now. Thank god for it on saturday nights as it beats the other channels hands down.

Slightly inaccurate - the fourth channel started in Wales the day before Channel 4 - which was not readily viewable in Wales. S4C was a mixture of channel 4 programmes and Welsh Language programmes provided by both ‘ITV, other programme makers and the BBC and therefore quite different from Channel 4.
Interesting the way TV came about from 1936. BBC already transmitting radio from 1922. TV licence introduced 1946. Radio licence abolished 1971. Some countries ahead of UK in TV, e.g. U.S. more TV's per head of population, more channels and introduced colour 1964. US used 525 lines, UK used 625, slowly replacing 405 which ended 1982. I find TV today, unlike past, dull, boring, violent and generally crap and have lived without it for 10 years. Despite improved plasma FST and HD quality, shame programmes aren't good quality and don't stand up to those of the past.
Good post- I think 405 lines was finally switched off in the mid 80s but I don't think anyone by then was watching it anyway. 625 line black and white was the baseline by the mid 70s and colour TVs outsold black and white TVs in 1976.
