Great review. I like that you are one of the few reviewers who make a review in real life, not like most of the other UA-camrs sitting behind a desk and keep talking and talking without showing any real footage. I'm considering to buys either this lens or the 24mm GM for traveling (mainly for video on ZV-E1), almost thee same market price. Hard decision which one...Greetings from Germany :)
07:45 Did you just implement the subscribe and click the bell animation at the perfect time in the video where you say 'bells and whistles'? Awesome planning and scripting! Keep it up.
Recently rented both for two weeks to shoot throughout the southwest US. I found the Tamron really soft; especially in the center. The lens generally lacked contrast and sharpness. Poor f2.8 performance whereas the Sony did very well.
I was looking at 20-40mm Tamron and I saw this video. I pre-ordered 24-50mm since I rarely film videos and I am mainly doing street photography and car photos.
Would you recommend this lens (Sony 24-50mm) or the Sigma 28-70mm/Tamron28-75mm lens for an all-in-one, compact lens? I know the Sony is a tiny bit smaller and shorter than the others and you get the extra Sony in-body features (focus breathing compensation, etc.), but you also lose 20ish extra mm of reach and it is a few hundred dollars more. Just wanting an extra opinion!
I have the Tamron 28-75 but I have to match it with Sony 20mmF1.8 or the Tamron 17-28. 28-75 is not ideal for a one lens solution, especially for city travel. My preferred zoom lens is now the Sony 20-70F4 G lens. I may consider this 24-50F2.8 as well.
This is the lens I have been waiting 30 years for... a 2x zoom from 50mm to 25mm (or thereabouts) with GM class image quality, compact dimensions and a fast enough aperture to blur the background at 50mm. BUT THIS IS ANYTHING BUT A GOOD UA-cam LENS. If you are doing selfies you want at least a 20mm preferably a 16 or 18mm. You don't actually need a fast aperture because most selfie movies actually want to show the background and give a context as to where you are.
That’s why I put a ? It’s a good all around lens that can be great for UA-cam but as I mentioned in my review it’s not wide enough for vlog style content
If you are in the market for a lens for your video work, I suggest you sell the 24-70 and purchase a 14/1.8 and use that in combination with your 35/1.4 and 50/1.4. An aperture of 2.8 to 4.0 is nothing like 1.4. Ditch the zooms and use the good primes you already own.
I have the 20-70 as well and have enjoyed it. Yes this new lens with an f2.8 aperture appeals to my lens snobbery. But I have to admit that having the 20mm is great and used often. It also allows me to leave my 16-35 at home, where as the 24-50 would likely force me to carry it. So I'm torn. I tend to like one lens carry and the background blur in your video definitely is attractive. So I'm not sure as well.
@@JevenDovey agree 100%, had Sony done that, even at anticipated higher price I would have preordered immediately. I will likely test this new lens against my 20-70 to see which I prefer.
Combine that lens with the tamron 17-28 f2.8 for super wide angle and vlog. This lens is very good and with internal zoom it is the best on the gimbal as it don’t change the balance. And then add the new 50-300. 17-28, 24-50, 50-300 all are 67mm filter size. The weight all three combined is 1525g (420+ 440+ 665)
Jeven, Great review. I am torn between this lens and the 20-70, would be great if you can do a detailed comparison of them , which one is your favorite ?
What did you choose? At this moment I like 24-50/2.8 more … just because I like it ..:) Though I understand 20-70/4 is a bargain for travel photography
@@pavelk7078 none of these two, bought the Sigma 24-70 DG DN II, and I would say does 99% of what I need comparing with the GM. Very happy with It, really sharp and has a great color rendition. If I've ever need a 20-70 light option for travel, I still can buy it and still not spending more than the GM option.......
Such a weird decision to make the 50mm longer extension than the 24mm when it's gonna be used close to the subject as a general rule. Very counterintuitive.
@@Outdoor_MED Sounds like your buddy doesnt really have experience with Sony. There are plenty of models that don't overheat and they have lots of the same features. Also the lens lineup is much bigger for Sony
Yes, this lens would be designed for UA-camrs. It's perfect for UA-camrs who shoot videos and vlogs and are happy if the bokeh is fluffy. What about for most of the rest of us? Probably perfect for daily family videos and shooting flowers in the neighbourhood, if the list price was half of what it is now. Standard lenses with 2x zoom used to be commonplace but are now obsolete. The reason is that 2x zooms in the standard range quickly become frustratingly small in zoom range.
I got mine and it's ridiculously sharp! Smaller, lighter, cheaper and 95% same IQ as the GM...and all I'm giving up is 20mm on the longer end? Totally worth! Throw a Sony 11mm F1.8 into a small bag for wide shots and you're done for most travel needs. (If you still.have space in the bag, a 85mm F1.8 to complete the range.
I’ve watched a lot of your videos meaning I enjoy your content, having said that and I mean no offense but you should get some headphones and go back and revisit rode vs DJI
This guy says Tamron 20-40 has alot of issues. 🤔 But in his review of the Tamron 20-40 it's titled an Incredible lens. 🤷🤦 People asking what issues from that review to now? And the response is 🤐
Tamron 20-40 is great but this lens is better. When the Tamron came out this lens and others were not available. Issues with the Tamron, limited range. Lots of focus breathing. When zooming your focus shifts. Not the sharpest lenses. Limited buttons on the lens itself. You have to control it with your camera. Benefits, fast, lightweight and priced well. I used the Tamron 20-40 to shoot this video and it looks great. ua-cam.com/video/0IzifVa_Xx4/v-deo.htmlsi=TiGe-KMGHwy9Gkpw With the options now I would choose other lenses but the Tamron still works if you understand its limitations.
I'm sorry, but what is the problem with Tamron 20-40?? besides not being made by Sony. You loved that lens a year ago and now it has "a TON of issues" The range is far more usable and impressive than this 24-50, it's lighter, cheaper without sacrificing speed and sharpness. You CAN vlog with it no problem. The tromboning is nothing to worry about. I used it on gimbals that are less powerful than the RS3 Mini, and you don't need to rebalance the gimbal. The only thing that the Sony has going for it is that it has an aperture ring. So I am sorry, but I don't find your "review" useful for someone who just wants to spend their money wisely. PS: STOP releasing "reviews" of FREE products, ON THE DAY of the announcement. You have the money, and your audience can wait for a proper review. Just my 2 pennies 🤷♂️
It’s not a free product. I have to buy it like everyone else. I just got a loaner to test it out early. Benefits of having a UA-cam channel where I talk about gear. Sony has no say in my video. They didn’t see anything before I released it. As for issues of the tamron here’s a few. - soft on the edges - less range - weird focus shift when you zoom - no aperture control - no custom buttons - no way to do Mf/af on the lens itself Not every feature matters for every creator but these were some issues that i had with it and why I sold it. The Sony is great and much better overall but missing the 20mm on the wide end as I mentioned in my review.
@@JevenDovey I felt the same way lol. Last year what a great lens and touting how well it worked. The missing features you mention also come at almost half the price of the Sony so that has to be mentioned as well.

I'll patiently wait for your decision whether this or the 20-70 f4 to get. as I have also the 35/1.4 and the 851.4 as part of my kit
