- One of my trail cams captured a second long-tailed weasel killing a timber rattlesnake and dragging it out from the confines of a New York winter den ….and that's not all!

There isn’t much better trail camera footage out there than what you’ve captured, this footage is incredible! Definitely one of a kind, looking forward to a long year of more amazing footage from you.
Thanks Riley! Trail cams offer such a unique opportunity to observe wildlife when no humans are around and I can't believe what mine have captured over the last couple of years and I always urge others to invest in one or seven lol
@@lotterhand I’m on ten and presumably counting, they are incredibly addicting😂
Fantastic incredible footage Mark , really cool seeing the weasel hauling off that rattle snake and then that barred owl coming in for the strike 😮. Thanks for the channel 👍
Thanks for stopping by! Yeah that owl!!! There I am watching every detail of the weasel predation, pleased with the way the footage captured the interaction and then that crazy chase at the end of the clip. A very active natural world especially when humans aren't around. Someone pointed out that you can see a flying squirrel gliding in the background at the 2:33 mark also!
What a Great all around showing of the "behind the scenes" of nature when these amazing wild animals think us silly humans are not watching. 😂 I'm surprised the owl didn't steal the Snake.
Just Amazing you got so much in that encounter!
Yeah it was a crazy recording...all that in 20 seconds. Trail cams over the last couple of years have revealed more than I could have ever hoped for.
Incredible footage, Mark. This must have huge scientific impact on the conservation of Timber rattlesnakes, as you are documenting predation that hasn't been seen. I assume?
Thank you. It may have some impact on timber rattlesnake conservation in the long run...this type of predation (i.e., den raiding) is new to me. I am sure I am not the only one that has documented such behavior, but I suspect it is relatively unknown, or at least the degree to which it occurs. At any rate I will continue to keep my trail cams up at several den sites during the winter months, hopefully gaining insight into this type of weasel predation.
Happy to subscribe! Very cool content and work. Thanks for giving reptiles a chance!
Thanks for the sub! I feel grateful that such technology exists to aid our knowledge regarding reptiles!
@@lotterhand absolutely! I am working on our latest video from a FL trip, and the memories we were able to film are incredible!
Mark this is incredible one of a kind footage, I highly recommend you contact Nat Geo soon this is ground breaking study and I also am sad the TR gets killed but its nature. Also at 2:31 as weasel runs away in background it looked like a flying squirrel fleeing a owl in the trees ?
I did watch this in 2160p on a good 65" tv so its possible others didnt see this, it was too cold to be flying insects, owl chasing something in background trees at 2:32
Thanks Ray for the boost of confidence! I do feel such footage can help us better understand what I suspect is relatively undocumented predation behavior! And very good eye! That is almost certainly a flying squirrel..classic glide shifting body to horizonal before it lands on tree trunk. I have seen it many times in person!
Amazing footage!!
This is a great channel! I was wondering, do you wear protective gloves when placing the cameras so close to where the snakes are?
Thank you Melani! Usually I set the camera up in the small cave opening when the snakes are already deep inside the structure for the winter. I still try to be cautious at all times regardless. I wouldn't crawl into the den during spring emergence or peak fall ingress.
It was hard to keep track of the action on my phone screen. Is there any chance the weasel that escaped the owl was the same one that had just gone off screen dragging the snake?
Hard to really see on a small screen. It is a second weasel...although hard to visualize without seeing the structure, but picture a granite wall between the weasel carrying the snake and the one that runs down the opposite side, which I attempt to show in that low drone shot. Anyway the weasel carrying the snake would have to run this big loop to enter the other den entrance on the opposite side of the rock wall, be spotted by the owl and run down that chute, covering 20 plus feet in just over a second for it to be that same weasel. Not sure if that makes sense.
Subscribed. Well done, sir.
Thank you and thanks for sub!!
Great footage Mark. I know its nature, but like you Mark, I do not like to see Rattlesnakes killed period.
I feel your sentiment, and it was unsettling to realize this was not an isolated event, but knowledge is power and this may help us better manage the timber rattlesnake in the long run, especially regarding small populations.
