      This is why you shouldn't focus on 5 star reviews, sadly. Get products that have a lot of 4 star reviews and very little 1-2 star reviews(a lot of times it's just user error anyways, or sometimes uncommon defects). Companies that push for the best fake reviews are obviously going to push more for 5 stars compared to 4, and at the same time, it makes sense to be happy with 4 because nothing is completely perfect in all aspects anyway.

    I use the Stableicer Maxx. They are more expensive than what he says in this video but I would not get any lesser product. An unmentioned benefit is that you can replace the cleats. This morning I was walking on a paved trail covered by solid ice with no problems. I also like how they fit on my boots. I wear size 12 and thought I should get the larger size (X-Large) but had to exchange them for the Large. Their size chart is accurate. It will adjust to a smaller shoe but if you get it too large the edges stick out and that can be a tripping hazard.

    We've use Stabilicers for years and they are great, but the screws on the bottom will wear down and become smooth and have less traction. Also, they occasionally pop off. But...they have very inexpensive replacement screws, about $3 a pack, and you can get your Stabilicers are as good as new! We hike a lot on trails and mountains and use MicroSpikes for where there's snow and ice. They work great on both, but are less comfortable if you're walking on only flatter surfaces with ice such as roads or sidewalks.

      How cool of them to provide replacement screws instead of making you buy a whole new set of cleats. That's good to know!

    • @blackopal3138
      @blackopal3138 5 років тому +4

      Human mind is funny... Looking through eBay i couldn't really see why one design would be better than the others, they are all quite similar. But the second he said the 'Stablicers' I instantly saw the design difference and why they work better. First, the others are all basically the same, it seems they focused on the straps keeping them on and didn't innovate the spikes. The way they are all similar is the spikes are distributed in the centers or center area of foot. The stabilicers put them around the outer edge, which makes complete sense because that's where you shift your weight to stay upright, all the time, even standing on grass. That also means your shifting your weight away from the center of your foot, so with the others you would be lifting them of the ground a bit or at least not putting weight on the spikes. They would even create height so the edge of your foot would have further to go, exaggerating the effect. And all spikes will wear down so the fact they make them replaceable and available is a deal maker if it wasn't done already. Tx for that little tidbit. I'm ordering now. haha.
      Peace

    In the mid 1990s, I had "Ice Joggers" that had 6 replaceable carbide spikes on each foot. That is 4 under the forefoot, and 2 under the heel. They worked well. One day in a home improvement store, I saw a similar product for $3 / pair. They had metal spikes, which seemed to be malleable: They quickly got mashed down, with considerable loss of ice penetrating ability.

    I have a pair of the Stabilicers Maxx that I wear over Pac boots. True, they grip very well. But keeping them fastened to my boots is a real P.I.T.A. No matter how tightly I fasten the velcro straps they still slip off. Maybe some kind of flexible elastic strap between the heel and toe running along the sides might keep enough tension on the straps to keep them from slipping?

    When you get older it’s even more important.
    Light skiff of snow hides the puddles of ice. There’s nothing more treacherous because everything seems pretty good until you hit the puddles. Impossible to not fall and very easy to get serious injuries.

    I have ALL of these plus traction devices. BTW Ice Trekkers Diamonds are $34.99 at Walmart, same price as last year. I have tried even more brands. The worst was Icebug shoes and extra grippers. Cute and deadly. The second Yak Trax and also the "Pro Version" You will slide on anything but carpet. Stabilicers are #1 for me. I live in Alaska and I walk pretty much everywhere. 2nd would be a cheap but really worthwhile - "Sure Grip". Its at Walmarts pretty much up north. XL is the largest size in Stabilizers and I can not get it over Mukluks or Baffin Boots but every other boot, yeah. I wear an 11 so its a tight XL despite their "guide". Very durable material. Did not rust like Diamond Trekkers - which also have broken on me many times! Their plasticy rubbery stuff was a lot less prone to falling apart than DuraGrip which smelled like a tire.

    I've been suspicious of YakTrax for years. It looks like the metal coils don't have the ability to penetrate ice, and can make a sliding surface against ice. I suspect the design is more suitable for use on snow without ice.

    I use the chain ones because I can take them off quickly once inside my destination (grocery/bank etc). I have worn them into stores but they can be hard on linoleum floors. I keep them in a zip bag in my pocket. I had tried the spring ones, but those really slide on floors, and when one breaks it catches on everything. The last one shown would be great when working around the farm.

    Learn to walk on ice unless of course it's sloping. Lower your body by bending the knees. Keep centered over your feet. Take short steps and slide each foot instead of lifting them. Go slow. It's better to lean forward slightly as leaning back is a sure way to fall backwards. Put your hands in front of you.
    Also. If using traction devices you can stomp each foot to dig the cleats into the ice. Unless there cheap yaktracks.

The Yaktrax Pros were a huge disappointment as I have heard good things about them. On the glare ice traction wasn't good.
