This military ceremony dates back to the early eighteenth century or earlier, when the colours (flags) of the battalion were carried (or 'trooped') down the ranks so that they could be seen and recognised by the soldiers. Since 1748, this parade has also marked the Sovereign's official birthday.Cheers young lady.

Great Explanation, just 1 small addition. The Act of Trooping the Colour is recorded in a similar form as far back as the 11th Century & continues today as a Tradition. Henry V had his Colour Trooped through the Nobles & the Fighters & Longbowmen prior to Agincourt for example in 1415 but the Earliest Recorded Trooping of the Colour was in Hastings in 1066 when King Harold showed his Banner to the Anglo-Saxon English & William the Conqueror showed his Colours to his Force of Norman, French, Flemish, and Breton troops.

@@stevetheduck1425 Hello Steve, Not entirely No. It's the Rallying Point when they're Given the Order to Retreat. In the Times that the Colour was Trooped so they knew it, No one Left the Battlefield until they were told to. That Order would come Via Drum or Bugle & the Field Officer would also shout at his Men to Retreat or Move Left or Right or keep moving Forward. Remember these aren't Trained or Professional Soldiers. For the Majority of Historical Battles, The English Forces Consisted of a Nobleman who bought with him his Own Knights (Fully Equipped with Armour & Weaponry), His Own Archers (Equipped with Long Bows) who were Both Well Trained & Well Equipped & His Own Tennants & other Serfs, who were Poorly Protected by Chain mail or Leather Armour & Helmets that had been taken off Previous Battlefields, Armed with Pikes, War Hammers, Maces etc & the Only Training the Would've had would be gained from Experience in Previous Battles. There was no Standing Army with Training, Just Several Thousand Untrained Civilians, Hundreds of Trained Nobles, Knights & Archers & The Royal Guards. Those People were not taught to Think, they were Taught to Follow the Orders Given to them by their Lords.

Each Regiment has its own Flag (called “The colour”)
Each year, one regiment is selected to troop their flag “colour” in front of other regiments and the Monarch and members of the Royal Family to honour that Regiment.
The flag is unfurled and trooped through the lines of the soldiers.
With the flag in front, the soliders troop the flag in front of the Monarch ( the late QEII and now King Charles) who is the Commander-In-Chief of the UK Armed Forces. The Monarch is essentially “Their Boss”! 😂
It is a great honour for the Regiment that is having their flag “colour” respected by the other soldiers and trooped in front of the King/Queen!

The history of this goes back 100's of years. The 'colours' would be unfurled and marched through the ranks of the soldier before a battle. This helped troops to recognize their own colours, which are a rallying point and also to instill some pride and honour. This is now a symbolic parade, but the principal is still the same, these soldiers will all be stood an inch or two taller and their chests will be a little more swelled!
So important to a regiment are the 'colours' that a rank was created to ' protect ' the colours in battle. These are Colour Sargeant, traditionally these men were some of the biggest and best fighters in the regiment!

When they start the escort for the colour marches forward as you saw in the video. Once the colour has been received the escort then becomes the escort to the colour. The colour also contains the battles that the regiment has fought in. There are five guards regiments which will take turns in trooping their colours. It is a great ceremony and show cases that we can do the best military ceremonies. They are all highly trained soldiers not just ceremonial.

Trooping the Colour dates back to Charles II in the 17th. Century when the Colours of a regiment were used as a rallying point in battle and were therefore trooped/shown in front of the soldiers every day to make sure that every man could recognise those of his own regiment. It's also the Monarch's official birthday parade.

For the record there's a hell of a lot of boys and girls from the Islands in the commonwealth serving in HM Armed forces now. A lot of the infantry units would struggle with numbers without them

    Hi Island girl
These guards are actually some of the UK's elite army soldiers and have been on active service around the globe so these men have to do this training on top of their actual military duties as well.
If you want to see something really spectacular you have to watch this yrs trooping of the colour because you will see King Charles III on horse back taking the salute and inspecting the guards.
Also these men are usually on this parade ground in the heat of summer in full military uniform which is a wool tunic and a bear skin hat so the uniforms are very very hot to be wearing. Some of these men actually have been known to pass out. If they do they actually get placed on a military charge for feinting

Someone will give you more information that me, but they are 'trouping the colour (the regimental flag) to show it to the men to make sure they know their new 'flag'. It was something they did in older times when they fought on the battle field. It was so men who had got caught up fighting away from their battalion or maybe were a bit disorientated, would be able to look up and immediately see their own battle colours flying and be able to make their way back to their own men.
Would you react please to 'The Bands of HM Royal Marines: Gladiator'. Before this requested video the Marines had marched through the streets of London from their Barracks to Royal Horse Guards Parade Ground. They had performed their 'Beating Retreat' traditions and then finished up with this performance of Gladiator as the sun was setting. They must have been exhausted, but after this video they marched back through the streets, still playing their instruments, and they looked as smart as they did at the beginning of the day. Such fine men!

Regimental Colours are at the very heart of British Army regiments and bear the battle honours of every conflict that regiment has fought in. Colours used to be carried into battle and were a rallying point for individual regiments in the confusion of combat. Hence, Trooping The Colour. It was vital that individual soldiers could recognise the Regimental Colours so the Colours were " Trooped", shown to them.

Some tourists think these soldiers are just there for them. Far from it. They are all front line combat soldiers and the proof? Ensign Ogilvie with the Colour was commissioned into the Guards in 2009. He was serving in Afghanistan in 2010.
Not surprised this lady is emotionally involved. These are brave soldiers who are trained and prepared to go to war (and possibly die) showing their duty and commitment to their Queen (then) and to their country with the very highest discipline and drill. The very essence of service.
No other country does this as well as the UK and why? Becasue it has a purpose and meaning and has been done for 360 odd years.

The Escort is called ESCORT FOR THE COLOUR when marching out to retrieve the colour and ESCORT TO THE COLOUR when trooping the colour....ie..once they have RECEIVED it.

  • @vickyRoyalHistory
    @vickyRoyalHistory 27 днів тому +2

A Quick Explanation of the Terminology.
"Escort For The Colour" The Detachment of Guards Who March Out to Receive The Colour.
"Escort to the Colour" The Same Guards Now have Possession of The Colour are now
    The Guard For The Colour.
The Colour is the Most Precious item each Regiment Hold. It is Guarded by an Escort every time it is Displayed. You May Notice some of the Guardsmen are wearing a Red Sash over their Left Shoulder, diagonally across their Chest. Those are "Colour Sergeants", they are the only Guardsmen who are not Officers who may Touch or Carry The Colour.
The Colour itself is a Mini Record of the Regiment & it is a Religious thing as much as a Secular one. When a Colour is Handed to The Regiment by The Monarch or a Senior Member of the Royal Family, it is done with a Religious Part that Turns it into a Holy Item. There is what is known as a "Drum Altar" (which is Drums Stacked a Certain way) The "Old Colour" that the Regiment has been using is laid against the Drum Altar, remember although it's Old & being Replaced, it carries the same Holy Significance as the "New Colour" which is Also laid against the "Drum Altar" & will be Blessed by the Priest Conducting the Religious Part of the Ceremony. Once the New Colour has been Blessed, the Monarch Hands it to the Young Officer Acting as Ensign (Colour Bearer). The Colour has The Royal Cipher on both Sides, the Roll of Battle Honours the Regiment has (All Battles the Regiment has been In) The Regimental Badge & Motto. The Colour is Updated with Battle Honours whenever it is Changed. Most of the Colours of the Armed Services were Replaced in April/May 2023 Ready for the Coronation of Charles lll. The "Old Colours" are Usually Retired to A Church or Chapel significant to the Regiment. For Example at RAF Biggin Hill, although it's no longer an Active Base, Several Squadrons of the RAF have Retired their Colours to the Chapel there which is still used. The New Colour is looked after by a Young Officer, who will even take it to his Room each Night & is expected to Guard it with his Life, it's that important. That is known as The Master Colour & is used for Special Parades only such as Trooping The Colour. There are Several Copies that are used for Day to Day Business such as Changing the Guard Ceremony at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle carried out by the Regiments of the Household Division. These are Regiments who perform the Trooping the Guard Ceremony. The Copy Colours are exactly 10mm Smaller than the Master Colour. You Will see them Carried by a Junior Officer at the Head of the Detachment of Guards, who is Flanked either side by an Armed Soldier who's responsibility it is to Protect The Colour & Colour Bearer. Known as "the Escort" You will see them Run Forward from the Guard Detachment to take up their Positions at the Command of 'To The Escort' Given by The Sergeant Major as they Leave the Barracks & 'The Escort' when they arrive at their Destination or Return to Barracks & they take Post at either side of the Detachment before tacking on to the Back of the Detachment. The Colour is always Protected while being Marched With.
During the Trooping the Colour, there are 2 other Regiments who Parade with the Footguards. The Household Cavalry Mounted Guards with their Mounted Band & The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery. They Parade & Pass the Monarch who takes the Salute at the Walk (Slow March) & the Trot (Quick March). Every Regiment on Parade Pass by at Slow March & Then Quick March to their Respective Regimental Marches. The Household Cavalry carry their Colour on Horseback, flanked by a Mounted Escort of each of the 2 Regiments that makeup the HH Cavalry. The Number 1 Gun of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery serves as their Colour. The Monarch Acknowledges each Regiment's Colour, by a Salute if they're Males as they hold Military Rank or by a Bow of the Head if they're Female as although they are Commander in Chief of the British Armed Forces, they do not hold a Military Rank. When Marching under Colour, any other Member of the Armed Forces who may Pass acknowledge the Colour by Coming to Attention by Command & Turning their Eyes Toward at the Command then Returning to Eyes Front at the Command. You will often see this happen during the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, when the Old Guard are Marching down the Mall from St James Palace to Buckingham Palace & a Squadron of The Household Cavalry passes them on the Way to Horse Guards Parade to do their own Change of Guard. The Colour itself is not Dipped to anyone other than the Monarch & is treated as The Highest Ranked Officer in the Army of any Regiment.
The Trooping of the Colour is a Tradition that goes back to the Time Armies were Born, making it one of the Oldest & Most Important Ceremonies in British History. In the Days when Battles were carried out by Serfs belonging to Nobles all fighting for their King or Queen, through the Establishment of a Standing Army who were paid to Fight on the Behalf of King & Country, The Colour was Trooped, meaning Marched through the Ranks of Men (The Troops) so that they recognised the Banner or Flag (The Colour) that they were required to Muster on as Ordered. It identified their Own Troops as the Battlefield was a Noisy & Confusing place & in the days before Standardised Uniforms or the Days when they fought as part of an Alliance of Several Countries, knowing their Colours meant you didn't have Friendly Forces Attacking each other. The Colours were Trooped every Evening before the Battle, so it would be fresh in the Mind.
I hope this helps you understand the Significance of the Colour & the Trooping the Colour Parade you've been watching. There are a lot of Good Channels on YT if you want to know more about the Traditions & Ceremonies of the British Army. I gather from your Accent you are from the Caribbean, Most of the Caribbean Nations were or are Members of The Commonwealth & as Such Many Caribbean Nationals Serve in the British Army, especially in the Foot Guards Regiments who do the Trooping of the Colour. So in a very real Sense, this is yet another part of your Rich & Varied Culture. You have every Right to feel Justly Proud of these Troops & your own Countrymen that are taking Part.
Stay Happy & Healthy & Be Safe!

When soldiers publicly do ancient ceremonies in ancient uniforms like that they provide reassurance that they'll hold the line defending British citizens and allies. You usually have to respect their boundaries while they're doing it, but they also do 'civil walks' which are more friendly ua-cam.com/video/B4sxiVwzw_4/v-deo.htmlsi=68QVVXG5N4Fp2f2t&t=145

Wonderful reaction, as always. This ceremony takes place every year in June to mark the Monarchs official birthday. The next Trooping of the Colour takes place on Sat 15 June and will be televised live by the BBC. It will be King Charles’ 2nd Trooping the Colour. If you want to know more about the Guards Regiments there is a documentary, which is about 10 years old called “Guarding the Queen”, which follows the journey of some new Guardsmen. It is available on UA-cam, and is 3 episodes long. Also there is another documentary which follows the journey of Troopers from the Household Cavalry, called “the Queens Cavalry”, the troops on horseback who escort the Monarch. This is also available on UA-cam. I think you’ll enjoy them and it gives everyone a good insight into the lives of these soldiers, who are the whole package, Ceremonial and Combat troops…they do it all.

The reason for trooping the colour date back a long time to when the weapons used were very loud and smoky and the armies were en-mass and there was a lot of confusion on the battle field. Each regiment would rally around their own regimental colour, so to make sure the men of a regiment recognised their own regimental colour it was Marched around the troops (men) of the regiment (normally in each regiments barracks or home base) this being known as "Trooping the Colour"

The Colour of a Regiment is the more honoured item it has. You can on it every single battle that Regiment has fought in, over
centuries. It is traditionally trooped through the ranks on the old battlefields so that every man recognised it as a muster point in a battle, with all the smoke and fire etc. The King rides through the men on his horse with the Royal Princes to be seen also. This hour-long ceremony is held every June in front of the Monarch and the Royal Family and a huge live audience. Then the whole thing parades back from HorseGuards Parade Ground, up The Mall (the red processional route in central London) to arrive at Buckingham Palace when the Royals all go up on the Balcony and the crowds surround them all. Wonderful sight.

The Colours { Regimental Flag } Is collected by the Ensign and is then Paraded through the ranks, accompanied by the Escort so that every man in the Regiment will recognise his regiment's flag. This was important back in the day when these soldiers fought in line of battles like Waterloo. The Bearskin caps are also a reminder of that famous battle when the British soldiers took the hats of their fallen French enemies. The Guardsmen on parade here are active duty soldiers serving in theatres of action around the world when not engaged in ceremonial duties like this >

The colour is the Flag of the Regiment which they parade along the line of soldiers so that they can recognise it. It has all the battle honours embroidered on it in gold, to show the battles & wars the regiment has served in over the years. A different Regiment gets to Troop their Colour each year in front of the Monarch, to show their years of service to the Crown.

trooping the colour started hundreds of years ago, the king at the time birthday was in the winter when at that time winters in the uk was very very cold, i think it was one of the king charles 1 or 2. so the monarch decided that as he couldnt celebrate his birthday because of the weather that he would have an official birthday in the summer when he could see all his troops. trooping the colour has become the monarchs official birthday and usually takes place on the saturday nearest to the 6th June.
the colour is the regimental flag, each year the monarch awards 1 regiment with a new colour., this usually takes place a few days before the trooping the colour. the royal family attend and the regiments parade around the parade ground showing their new colour to the other regiments and they all parade past the monarch in turn.
that is basically how it works

Now that the Scots Guards have taken possession of the Colour the defend their Flag and the Flag bearer (Ensign) against enemies. The Regimental Colour is presented to the Regiment by the Sovereign. After the Coronation of King Charles III, new Colours bearing his Royal Cipher were presented. The entire Trooping Ceremony goes for an hour and a half.

The colours are the heart and soul of the regiment with embroidered banners containing the names of historic battles the regiment has fought some going all the way back to the English civil war and many from the world wars. They are a symbol to the men following them reminding them of the legacy they carry and the courage of those who came before them.

The Colours are the battle honours of that Regiment, they list every battle this Regiment has fought in. The Escort to the Colour is just that, they are escorting the Colour as it is trooped (marched) before the troops. They are to study this Colour because, in the 17th and 18th Centuries the Colour was a rallying point for troops in battle, which was noisy and very confusing for troops with smoke and cannon fire, they would recognise their Colours and form up on them. The Escort to the Colour are also tasked with defending their Colours against any enemy. To lose one’s Colours is a great humiliation, because you lose your Regiments honour, better death than dishonour. These days the Colours aren’t carried into battle.

In later years he would watch Trooping on tv and explain the different marches, tunes etc. I watch this ceremony to this day with a few tears!

There are twO flags one is called the Regermental Colours this flagella can be any colour from blue to yellow . The second flag is the kings coloursthis is the Union flag with the king or Queens Sypha there Initials with there crown above in the field and on parade the Kings colour is always on the right the Regermental colour is always on the left . The reason is in the times of black gun powder if there's no wind then the smoke hangs about from wieast to about two foot above your head . So to tell you which way you should be going if the flags are in the right position kings on the Righ Regerments on the left your going forward but if its the other way around your going backwards moveing to the rear
