  • Big subject right now in college football: A potential legal settlement that involves power conferences and could ultimately lead to revenue sharing with student-athletes. Ramifications exist, including the possibility of eliminating walk-ons, according to media reports. Nebraska coach Matt Rhule, not surprisingly, is against that idea. We discuss the continued importance of walk-ons at Nebraska -- and why an 85-player roster cap would dramatically alter the Huskers' program. Is it likely to happen? Also, we're talking Big Ten baseball and some house-cleaning issues around the league's football landscape.

It has changed so much since the nineties. Players that use to walk on would be scholarship recruits now. They have more options.

    Unintended consequences:
    1. Reducing choices for college athletes to play at any given college of their choosing. If you HAVE to be good enough to earn a football scholarship, you might not be able to attend a D1 school to then walk -on to the football team.
    2. For every one of the 45 football players you eliminate from the 145-man roster on the current Husker team...to a "for example" 100-man sized team....you just also eliminated 45 female athletes in other university sports...possibly entire women's programs from said university.
Spin it like that and you'll open some eyes of the unhinged proponents of such a restrictive policy.
IMO, it's always better to grant more freedom within the rules then less freedom. Let each individual university decide how big their roster will be within their budget and facilities size, etc.
    Thoughts?
