I'd actually love to see your take on the Mastodon troop transport. It's big, it's chonky, and it's dumb as a brick. It's adorable and deserves more love than it gets
The thumbnail is a bit odd, I don’t remember the land raider would have a demolisher cannon and a siege shield just like the vindicator variant for the rhino.
Rarer FW varrient, a Dark angel specialist model of the Land raider. Built for siege and intense urban combat. Theirs a whole list of less comman kinds, including, command, mortor, MLRS, and other modifications that have spring up over 10k years. Its the primary heavy armour planform for Marines, and also has a much larger sibbling called the Spartan, and Marstadon, that same genetics only much larger.
@@hammer1349 That's not an Achilles. The tank depicted in the thumbnail is the Land Raider Ares, a variant used specifically by the Dark Angels while hunting the Tribunal on Murun. The design was submitted to the Mechanicus, but has not yet been sanctioned, making it specific to the Dark Angels and their successor chapters. It does kinda resemble an Achilles at first glance, though.
@Brad Simpson ah yeah now I remember. The achilles swaps the dozer shield and demolisher cannon for a thunderfire cannon and extra front armour while keeping the same multi melta sponsons
It probably because the Land Raider was one of the first…vehicles…GW came up with for 40K that it’s so competent. Back when Games Workshop was relatively small and the mad lads running the place at the time were geeked out on historical war machines. If I remember correctly, many of those guys would leave GW to go on and create Warlord Games and their bevy of historical war games. (Can I get a fact check on that from somebody?)
Tanker's View Vtubering ain't something I would have expected, hah! Always nice to see you post a vid. Again putting forth my request for the ork Battlewagon, even though you wouldn't find much standardisation lorewise, we know GW put out one kit and that's gonna be the base. Imperial Armour 8 has some deec quasi-technical sheets, and I think you could see parallels to IRL vehicles easy enough. Also, still hoping for that flame tank video!
One variant of the Land Raider foregoes the troop transport capability to mount 3 set of twin-linked lascannons, and an extra pair of individual lascannons per side where the side doors would normally be. For a total of eight anti-armor barrels, the Terminus Ultra might just be up there in your definition of what a tank is.
@@yeetleskeet854 That is indeed the Terminus Ultra's designated role. It's the "tank destroyer" of the Land Raiders. Lascannons are usually useful against TEQs, which tend to have small model counts per units anyway. So a Terminus Ultra with all its lascannons could situationaly be used against heavy infantry.
The Land Raider is a really great transport and battle tank. But the track design being a backwards version of the same origin of the Leman Russ Tank is my biggest gripe with it. It's strong, heavily armored, modular, and so much more. Except for the fact it wouldn't be able to handle rough terrain with that track design. Great tank, huge glaring problem.
MY fave 40k tank...after watching a few of your previous vids and few other YT vids I thought you were just jumping on the 40k fan train...but then you said land's raider so you did really look into it. Kudos to you.
Finally found your second channel Tony. Loved watching your videos on the Greatest treaded warriors of Mankind the Bolos. Since you have a second channel now, I was able to build a scratch built MK. 2 Bolo. My future build project is to built a plastic model of my own Bolo from a story I've been working on and off with. Hope to read read novel when its finished.
I found this pretty interesting Sci Fi worldbuilding RP verse called "Ancerious Galactic" by a artist called EmperorMyric. I looked at some his ships and boy do they look very armed and pretty dang huge. There is even alot of art for tanks and other vehicles in verse. They look like their navy and ground forces can fight the Warhammer 40k factions head to head in direct battlefields.
I've never understood why GW opted to place the main guns behind the side hatches, which is why I've always assembled mine to put them in the forward position and the hatches behind. Part of this could just be habit though. I've been in the hobby long enough to remember the previous land raider kit that mounted the las cannons forwards.
Hi. How you been? Have you considered exploring the Warhammer Fantasy vehicles like the Imperial Steam Tank or the Chaos Dwarf Iron Daemon? (The in-game models from Total Warhammer would be useful for a view).
The way I see it, the Land's Raider can't be classified by any modern standards. It's not quite an MBT, an SPG or an APC but, at the same time, it has qualities that are reminiscent of all previously mentioned vehicle types. If I was held at gun point and asked to classify it, I'd have to go with "heavy IFV" or "assault transport tank". But, really, the best answer is to simply put it in it's own category: "Land Raider"
@@XD-sc4ix "Self Propelled Gun". "SPG" is sort of a broad term for vehicles that carry great firepower in the form of, often, a single great weapon or weapons system. To do this, such vehicles typically lack a turret, machineguns and (not always) any kind of armor all together, to the point they can actually be considered to be guns on wheels/tracks. Because of this, SPGs will usually act as artillery, though more broadly, as non-frontline units. Real world examples of SPGs usually carry howitzers, mortars and multi-tube rocket launchers as their primary and only armament. It's worth noting that vehicles armed with anti-tank missiles and high velocity cannons (specially missiles, in the modern era) are more specifically considered to be "Tank Destroyers", and these vehicles will usually also have armor and machineguns, as they see much more frontline use, and some tank destroyers will even have turrets, making some of them very similar to tanks in appearance. "Self Propelled Anti Aircraft Guns" (or "SPAAG", for short) are usually armed with SAM (surface to air) missiles or an array of heavy calibre autocannons, chainguns or machineguns loaded primarily with air-bursting, incendiary or simply explosive ammunition (before there were missiles, long range AA work was done by huge guns firing heavy flack rounds at large groups of aircraft; at the same time, missiles will be made obsolete by potent lasers at some point in the future) and these kinds of vehicles almost always have turrets, but no armor or machineguns (they instead use camouflage, radars and ECM systems for protection; additionally, SPAAGs armed with many autocannons make the use of machineguns redundant, while missile SPAAGs often operate so far away from the frontline that they seldom need machineguns). As for examples in WH40k: the Basilisk, Medusa, Griffon, Thunderer, Whirlwind and Vindicator are all simple SPGs. Things like the Hydra and Hunter are SPAAGs. The Laser Destroyer, Leman Russ Vindicator and Shadowsword are tank destroyers. And this is a classification of classic space marine vehicles by modern standards, plus a Land Raider variant which I think would fit in that category, even if all Land Raider are overweight and overkill in any: ATV/Recon: Land Speeder, Attack Bike, Assault Bike. APC: Rhino, Land Raider Crusader. IFV: Razorback, standard Land Raider. MBT: Predator Destructor. SPG: Whirlwind, Vindicator (and the Thunderfire Cannon, sort of, thought it more of a fancy "field artillery piece"), Land Raider Helios and Land Raider Ares. Tank Destroyer: Predator Annihilatior, Laser Destroyer Vindicator, Land Raider Terminus Ultra. SPAAG: Hunter. As an unrelated note, there are many Flamer/Melts/Toxic Tanks in WH40k that also cannot be classified with standard methods. Historically speaking, tanks armed with flamers were variants of regular tanks, so they were still considered to be tanks since they had turrets with cannons and machineguns (flamethrowers were usually hull-mounted), and they would perform regular tank missions. More recently, the TOS-1 has been conceived to be a dedicated flamethrower vehicle though, more generally, it is an SPG. I guess Hellhounds are SPGs, even though they look like tanks, since they lack cannons.
Pretty good design which is surprising for GW. They should have kept the blueprints in records on Terra and multiple production worlds not just centralize all the records on one world away from the capital and also not kept contingency copies of the records. That's pretty foolish and shortsighted in hindsight. For the next tank review what do you think of Terrain Seige Tanks from Starcraft and Metal Gears from the Metal Gear series?
The land raiders the gun carrier of the astartes. What gun? Doesn't matter, pick one. Actually most of the first born armor is like that. You look at it & you can tell what the original metal box was it's just got various aftermarket parts like a striker brigade.. my favorite land raiders probably the one where they mounted a mortar & multimeltas on it then went looking for the most ridiculous armor they could find to clad it in. The result is the Achilles, a land raider that eats enemy armor at close quarters or drops to who it may concern over walls at a distance & still finds room for 6 astartes in that hull. Have we got the rhino circus yet?
Remember. Twin linked guns are a bad thing. Unless the guns are so small you're practically garuanteed to hit any target larger than a human at 300 paces.
'Cept it kind of makes sense in universe when you consider the technoretards don't actually know how things work half the time, so they might not have the ability to at least mass produce larger variants, so slapping two of the things you can make and feed makes a bit more sense!
I want to argue that they may have slight range of motion just enough to get the guns in about the same area, or just set convergence at a certain distance. But that would be coping. On the other hand they would both have use for more bullets and already have a machine spirit doing separate guns each of which will have it's own array of smaller targeting and such. Same problem with wing mounted weapons on astartes aircraft, I just gave them something to rotate on under the wing, at least that would be the smart idea for them considering counter measures from missiles in 40k seem to be advanced not discounting the armour most of the aircraft have.
If I may make a recommendation for your next vehicle, I think you may be interested in the Astraeus, a more unique variant compared to the likes of the Baneblade and seeing your possible opinions on Titans could be fun.
The Land Raider is an awesome all rounder. Tank, troop transport, mobile communications hub. The Land Raider variants also have nothing to apologise for. Regretfully, Tau rail rifles can make a mess of them!
My proposal for next video. We all agree that Battlefild 2042 not good game (speaking very gently) M1A5 is very cool tank design, especially since it turned out to be very similar to AbramsX technology demonstrator.
Unless they've changed the lore, the reason for the lack lf Landraiders is actually dumber than your usual 40k tech stagnation, at the height of the Heresy things, well, things weren't going well, supply couldn't meet demand so Big E decreed all Land Raiders should be reserved for Adeptus Astartes, which makes a kind of sense they were the primary fighting force with the Imperial Army seen very much as a support and garrasioning formation, thing is when Big E got shanked and ended up a glowing corpse on The Golden Throne, there just wasn't anyone senior enough to countermand his order and he didn't remember to mention it in his final instructions to Dorn while he wired him up to the Throne, so in theory there are massive, country sized production lines for Land Raiders just not being used as although the STC is fully avaliable Big E said marines only (and foe some reason Girleman didn't think to erase that particular rule from the docket after his return, although in fairness poor lads had a lot on his mind) He probably should though, just imagine a turreted version mass produced to replace or supplement the russ, broadly similar weapons capabilities, better sensor suite with Machine Spirit assisted targeting and a better level of all round armour protection and turn of speed. Even if the ones palmed off on the Guard weren't to the same spec's or production quality it would still be a pretty big step up from the Russ
Baal predator is similar but hatches behind the guns, ramp in the rear, and i belive is a tank. Wish you actually said why land raidera cant be tanks as im not familar with the definition
