I like this quarterly update idea helps break up the usual format and gives both yourself and us the viewers a chance to reflect on your progress.
I must say with the shot from below the viaduct with the class 50 it looked real and not a model at all.
Best of luck sorting the clicking issue with the pullman.
    Ross.

Oh Charlie, I feel for you I really do and I admire you for showing it all. There are just so many variables impacting on smooth, safe running of a railway, even in model form where it’s all under our own control and we don’t have to worry about staff training, supervision, competence assessments and all that goes with it. It’s such a great journey that you are taking us on. Keep smiling. Tony Cardall

Having built (and lived with) model ships before, my go-to for a dusting brush is a "blusher" out of the makeup section of the store. They come in generous sizes and shapes while being super soft. They can benefit from a very old bit of kit: a turntable deionizer, to give them some staic cling to attract the dust (much as they would dust from a vinyl record).

With cyber gel/clean I just pull off a small ball from the main blob and you can roll it gently over the models and then when it's turned a dirty green you only have to bin a small amount so the pack lasts longer. I was cynical about it till I tried it. It helps me out as I have an infestation of false widow spiders who seem to be attracted to One my 009 layouts in particular. Love the channel and inspiring me as I am nearing completion of my new garden studio (model railway room) and the way you show mistakes as well as success on many videos helps me feel less frustrated about when I have made faux pas. Keep up the great work and cheers for such a great style of presentation.

Thanks yet again for an interesting video. One idea I picked up watching mpeterII was using tins can (baked beans, beer etc) to hold down the track when gluing it. I've used books, plastic bottles, catalogues, tools etc - some of which end up sticking slightly to the glue; but the tin can approach seems much more uniform and easier. Just don't keep the beans too long past the date in case they begin to ferment!

Hi Charlie, great informative video as always, with regard to the derailment problem on the pullman set, I think that it is a wheelset out of gauge on the rear car last bogie, so check back- to-back measurement as the whole set traversed the turnout fine until the final bogie, which incidently was giving you a clue with the 'clicking' noise as the train made its way down the helix.

Excellent Charlie I thought it was only me that had problems when I start running trains.
The Hornby close couplers allow easy uncoupling of rakes of coaches and fit the Nem pockets.
I have a steep downhill geadient 1 in 36 and have problems with trains trying to push the loco down and at thd top corner the weight of train is causing problems with Kadees and Buffer locking two radius bigger than you 3rd.

Hi Charlie. Another informative and enjoyable video I feel really sorry that you are having some problems, especially after all the hard work you have put in to your layout. If most of your trains run through the helix with no problems, then it could possibly be a wheel gauge problem on the pullman which will probably be easier to sort out. It would be a shame to disturb the helix if you don't really need to. Hope it turns out to be an easy fix. I thoroughly enjoy watching your video's and following your progress. Cheers Chris.

Totally agree about the use of Copydex to fix track down, it's excellent. I always wonder though why you don't follow the instructions on the bottle? I put a thin coat of glue on the track and the trackbed. Wait for both to dry and then place strips of card on the trackbed and test lay the track on top of that. I then hold a piece of track in the correct position and slide out one of the bits of card - instant adhesion of track top the bed, and no worrying about slippage during drying - or finding enough weight. Removal of each strip in turn then completes the job.

Another interesting video Charlie and looking forward to your speed measuring edition.
Back in a former life (1980-1992) I was a TOPS clerk and have memories of producing train lists for freight trains as one of our jobs in the Area Freight Centre. Back in 1980 up to around 1982 ish it was only class 4 and class 6 trains that were fully fitted (continuously braked. Classes 7 8 and 9 had varying degrees of brake force in the fitted head but were all loose coupled.
Not sure when but sometime in the early 1980s freight trains were reclassified and class 9 became the only loose coupled classification. Class 7 became a fully fitted fitted train able to run at up to 45mph, and class 8 became the same for up to 35mph. An endorsement on the TOPS produced trainlist suggested in some cases that the vehicles were all suitable for running at a higher speed and subject to brakeforce the train could run as a class 7 or even as a class 6. A select few guards would often come into the office and ask for a new train list with the higher headcode, allowing the driver to run the train faster.
Must try and find out when the changeover occurred.

Another great video Charlie. I understand the inside track down and outside track up on the helix. Some of those coaches seem to make the inside track radius look tight. Maybe check the trucks on the coach that derailed. Might be the screw is too tight in the bolster? Also, check the gauge of the wheel sets. The train that derailed... maybe run it down the outside track to see how it tracks?

    @tomlawton7087 3 роки тому +1

Charlie, at last I see you’ve found a use for all those railway books and magazines I’ve been buying. I must tell the wife!
Key thing with voltage testing is that there should be a load in the circuit, preferably at the end. Without current, the resistance of poor fishplates, etc, will have no effect, and so the voltage will remain at the same value as at the source (the controller). So a 12v 5w bulb (sidelight from a car) on croc clips will attempt to pull the rails “together” (reducing the voltage difference) and your good wiring will keep those rails at the controller voltage. (As previously mentioned, debug your rails/wiring one connection at a time, else the multiple connections could leave you vulnerable to a single failure in future. See your test of the helix for an example)

Hi Charlie, went to the PECO site this evening to see if there are plans to manufacture a Code 83, Unifrog No. 8 Switch. While checking out the PECO site, I noticed that there was a video on how to install and ballast track. And there you were, well done. Must say that, while the PECO video was well done and very informative, I enjoy the less formal you tube videos and your sense of humour when from Chadwick Model Railway. As I am now, at 72, just returning to the hobby after 40 years, much has changed. Looking forward to operating using a Digitrax DCC system and appreciate your informative videos regarding not only DCC but all aspects of the hobby. Thanks John

There are just so many different couplings now Charlie, it's hard to test-run every possible combination. Even without moving into Kaydees or Hunts, there are so many variations of couplers fitted as "standard" now by the big manufacturers, especially on multiple units like the Pullman. Every different height will react differently on the helixes and downhill, with the couplings compressed, will quite probably be more problematic. Good Luck with it.😁
It might be an interesting project: count how many different couplings you have fitted to your rolling stock.

On the topic of couplings for Bachmann mk1 and mk2 coaches, for in rake couplings if you want to separate the coaches but not use tension lock I'd suggest the Hornby close couplings R8220, they don't ride up and cause problems like tension lock and bring the coaches into a prototypical distance while still going round R2 track

The first time I saw that pullman tain run was at the Model rail club in Alsager, between us it took about a half hour to decide how it went together and we still got it wrong, another 10 mins to fit it correctly but it did seem to run alright. Then as you say to seperate it and put away was another problem. It would be a shame if it's a problem with the helix, as you spent such a while getting it just right. Then again if it's the train OMG £600 and I wouldn't think you can adapt it. Another super video cheers Frank.

lol those gel cleaners were marketed for keyboards years ago we found them rubbish and binned them but the concept is frustratingly interesting. My perspec display cases all come with a peice of what vinyl that you can peel off touch it to the case but apart from removing the light dust it removes finger marks but you have to be gentle because they can be so sticky you need your fingers to get it back off lol. But just like a lint roller I’ll stick with the serious elbow grease it takes to clean them lol. But thanks for rekindling the nostalgic Colour

Thanks for the gel pad. It left me chuckling. It looked as though the steam pullman passed through the helix and the pointwork fine. The Diesel pullman seemed to be fine down the helix but didn't look so happy and it appeared to be the last power unit that caused the problem. It didn't seem to like changing direction. Are you going to repeat the run to a different set of points to see if it happens again because it may be the reverse curve that is the issue with the grey pullman.

However I suspect that if your issue is not due to connections between the cars it could be that one power car is quicker than the other. CHarlie, I was sort of perversly gratified to see you have some problems with track/trains. I seem to spend a lot of time with just a few "difficult" spots which seem to depend on the particular locamotive and train cars. I am embarrassed to think about how many times I have ripped up a section and redone it to achieve better operation. I think I am down to just a very few but they seem to be really difficult to identify the exact issue that causes the problem. I am always busy with my tiny level and trying different minute wedges under the track to see what the isssues are. I wish you the best in getting that train running smoothly and dependably!

A joy to watch, as always! Thank you!
Just an idea, though - it might sound crazy (probably is), but how awesome would it be if you "filled" the whole area inside de layout with scenery, connecting the "river" coming from the viaduct with the other "river", on the opposite board? Of course, the whole thing would have to be removable to give access to the digitrack system, the power bus etc., but it would look super cool!

Whilst at college today I thought I would take a look at the plan on board two and load and behold one set of tracks do not meet up with board one. So I set about moving some things around and the more I move the more that I had to move. So what started out as a small problem has now turned into a disaster and at 16.00 I called it a day and when home and I am not going to look at it again until Monday.
