Synopsis:
Medical intern Robert Morley is distraught after his wife dies in childbirth. He's resentful of his new son and wants nothing to do with him. He leaves the child with his aunt and uncle and heads off to Europe to pursue his medical studies. Morley returns to his hometown six years later, now a successful doctor and engaged to be married to a beautiful socialite. He also feels differently about the boy and attempts to gain custody from his aunt and uncle.
Reviews:
One obviously cannot review a 90-year-old film with the same eyes as one would a contemporary motion picture. Acting methods, filmmaking options, societal norms... you have to keep that all into consideration. With that being said, it is a little remarkable how much material is covered here during a running time barely over an hour. And, by golly, there was even a scene that choked me up emotionally. I wasn't expecting that! I suppose some basic emotions are timeless, and this succeeds beautifully in drawing us into the story and making us care. Little Buster Phelps is basically a male Shirley Temple here, right down to the exaggerated line delivery and pouty lower lip, but by the end, he got to me. Actually, all performances are quite good - especially Sleeper, who takes a potentially cliche character and adds a bit of dimension. I think this deserves comparison to similar classics such as STELLA DALLAS.
