All these long-time fans complain about the Arctic Monkeys' style changing, but fail to realize that change is often necessary for bands. As much as I liked Alex's Humbug-era mop, the guy is 28 years old. He can't look like he did in the "Cornerstone" video forever. You say their music all sounds the same now, but imagine if they were still using the exact same style that they had in earlier albums. Sure, that might be what you'd prefer, but the complaints would come rolling in eventually. Besides, the last thing any of us fans want is for them to get sick of what they're doing and drop out of the music industry entirely. Let's face it - every band undergoes evolution. Personally, I don't mind the change from British indie to American indie. My top favorite Monkeys songs still remain amongst their older albums, but that doesn't mean I despise their new stuff. And if you support this band, you shouldn't either. Alex's greaser look makes him appear more grown up, and I think that's a good thing. He's not a baby anymore.
If you want a band that releases the same album over and over you need to be listening to Offspring or some shit. I never understand it when people criticize a band for changing things up. The harder they try to stay the same, the better they'll be at showing you how that original sound really wasn't as great as you think it was. Otherwise, they'll do what people do and try to grow. All the worst acts and albums I can think of are from groups that refuse to move on or always trying to recapture the hit that made them famous - it's shit because it's the opposite of what art is. To achieve the best results, these artists have to take chances. While that necessarily means sometimes they'll fall flat, your alternative is guaranteed banality. People who criticize bands for moving on from one album to the next might as well be screaming at Hollywood for Transformers 5. These people need to fuck off or lose their voices. We don't need sequels; we need vital, adventurous art.
Agreed, but the change from indie rock to pure pop is a bit shocking. Not bad, but definitely a shocking change. I enjoy the new album, but prefer their older stuff. Their look I could not give a fuck about.
Artists want to be heard. Sooner or later, after they've attracted a decent following, they'll attract some money. The idea for both parties (the artists and the money people) is to improve the reach of the music. When money becomes involved, things almost always move in the direction of pop. If you think about it, it makes sense. Either there is some rebellion against the idea of selling out (in which case, someone who never should have taken the money in the first place loses the benefits it brought) and probably fall back into obscurity, or success in widening the reach of the artist diversifies the audience for the music. I'm sure in some cases it's just selling out (particularly bands that sound the same on every album or lack any lyrical depth), but it doesn't have to be. You take a small group of dedicated fans who liked the group originally, and add to them a much larger portion of people who like what the group became and who also bring in their own diversity of tastes. A band could evolve toward pop simply by paying attention to their new audience, and without a thought to the money.
Just here to reiterate the fact that I love anybody to everybody who appreciates Arctic monkeys for their worderful lyricism , spectacular instrumental sequences and low key unusual selection of themes . Thank you .
