- Neptune Aquatics is an institution in the San Francisco Bay Area aquarium community. Established in 1999 in Milpitas, Neptune moved to its current facility in San Jose a few years later after being acquired by current owner, Robert Tran.
We spoke with Rob about the triumphs and tribulations he's experienced as an aquarium store owner and what motivates him to come into work every day. He also explains why they recently retrofitted their Red Sea Max S500 with the brand new Kessil A360X and how, as a result, the SPS corals in the tank look better than ever before!
If you're ever in Northern California, be sure to pay Neptune Aquatics a visit.

This place is awesome. The tanks they have are amazing and I noticed they always ran Kessil lights. I have had a Kessil since, great video.
I like this guy . A lot off lfs owners turns into crooks due to hard times. This guy tells 💯 percent the truth... wish you guys much success.
This is why I'm a true believer in supporting my lfs...
Just purchased two a160we tuna blues and have my ordcit marine 3 48 strip led and wow! I'm not grabbing 2 a360x and adding them to start corals. Our tank is around 10 years old and doing very well. Can't wait to get some corals growing
Are you running those 360x with the kessil controller? If so I would love to know the program you're running for intensity and color and schedule. That tank looks unreal!! I can't wait to set up my 360
I'd love to know too. There isn't really any programming info available because these lights are so new
imsatanscott have you managed a program pls. I bought 4
What's your daily program/ setting on a Ap9x for a sps dominate tank?
Robert, it was your $68,000 tank in your showroom that got me into this hobby couple years ago. I really want to ask a lot of questions about your shop and hopefully this is the right place to ask.
How do you do the plumbing in the shop? All display reef tanks have automatic water change from one source or they are all plumbed together? I would imagine the workload if each is plumbed by itself. What about all the frag tanks? I see a lot of live rocks and algae under them. All plumbed together? I thought soft corals require different parameters than SPS. I bought a few frags from you and I tested the nitrate when I got home. It was 2ppm which is perfect. How do you control all the parameters of your tanks? I am sure there is another half of the shop that we can't see. Do you keep your incoming fish in some holding tanks? If so, for how long? Dosing copper? Treating disease? It would be nice to have a behind the scene tour of your shop so that we can make our tanks half beautiful like yours.
Love my KESSIL A160.
Where’d I get it🤔?
Oh yeah, Neptune Aquatics😃!
What coral is that at 4:32?
A company with terrible after-sales service. They will ask for a $100 inspection fee before repairing.
so kessil, whats a good schedule for the a360x? any hints? is it unreasonable to think you might update the spectral controller from 8 time slots to 12? why only 8 anyway? most people seem to run their lights for 12 hours in some fashion...
Been to this shop multiple times, love it and one of the best in the silicon valley!
Absolutely love this shop and Robert is a very nice and informative owner! Awesome video
Would you mind sharing your settings for the 360x
Excellent vid. Nice story! Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed watching!
Whats the color settings how much intensity etc
Where can i find program and light settings
This is my #1 Reef store. Robert is awesome. Always look forward to seeing him when I go in. All the guys and gals there are very nice and helpful. Great place with a very wide selection. Amazing display tanks that really inspire. Got my Red Sea tank and all of my equipment from here. Couldnt ask for a better local shop, really.
Awesome video👊👍
I'm just here because I just bought a kessil A80 today July 12, 2021. I'm going to set it up tomorrow morning and do my small videos. What's ironic is that I bought this light at Neptunes in San Jose. What's even more crazy I use to work with an old rival of theirs , king aquarium around 2009-2014. Now days I have my own business selling my own salt-brand directly to consumers cuz no store wants to play ball.
Wish all shop owners were like this guy!! I wish you all the success you can stand!!
Best coral shop in Northern California. Been going their for years. And even bought a lagoon tank plus the stand from them. Their coral selection is by far the best. This store is coral heaven.
Love your guys lighting. I think they are the best there is. Best regards.
Hey what do you think about the life span of the kessil ? I want to buy one but it’s a huge investment. I planning to buy one only if the last 4 to 5+ years .
im still using an A350w that's like 7 years old and its still growing the acros and all my corals great ,also running 2 A160wes , but the corals still prefer the A350w , lots of colour and great health , ive also brought a lot of almost dead acros back to life with these lights , cant wait to order a couple A360x's
I bought my koi betta and he is doing great and his colors had changed much brighter
What a hobby , its magical ! Brings joy and happiness to everyone, lovely shop and as always Kessil is doing amazing job , well done all 👍🏻👍🏻
I love Neptune Aquatics. I returned to the hobby after a 20 year hiatus and Robert and the crew at Neptune have made it super successful for me. I don't shop anywhere else.
I love Neptune Aquatic, I enjoy looking at all the fish tanks and taking home a few. 🐠🐟❤️
Neptunes is a great shop. I drive 2 and a half hours one way to get stuff from them.

This place is worth going to. Everyone that works there has great knowledge of the aquatic life .. some of the most amazing corals I've ever seen

Your crew are the best! I love supporting Neptune aquatics,
What your website I would like too order some corlas from you
Kessil Advertisement. Kool.
I know the Kessil shimmer is best of LED, but it still looks very synthetic to my eye.

He seems to be an amazing person, but he was doing something wrong when the systems were under t5s, because t5s are much easier to grow colorful corals than any LED light. Perhaps the type of fixture that he was using? I'm not saying that he isn't true to his words, but he must have been doing something wrong when he had T5s. Some of the corals aren't doing good under those Kessils anyway... bleaching and dying. I just don't feel that diminishing T5s like that is fair. All the best!
@Tuan Phan I don't think so. Light doesn't depend on maturation. It's all about application. He most likely didn't have a proper T5 system for the tank he was using. Or was doing something wrong and blaming the T5s. Many even say they need T5s as a supplementation for their Kessils because for proper coverage. Take a look at the corals @3:20. That would never happen under proper T5 lighting. It could happen under those Kessils, though, as it probably did. Or he has other issues, like inappropriate chemistry.
@@Alex_Correa Heat was the issue mate,he stated that the t5s were great at growing corals but the heat started affecting the tank thats why he changed to leds i have kessil a360xs and from my expirience they are probaly the best leds on the market.
@@Jade191084 Nah, I had T5s for 10+ years and where I live can be really, really hot summer time. Even halides can be used here with small fans. The heat excuse to use LEDs in an old one. Many are already learning that. Again, application of each type of light is what dictates the success for that system. To diminish T5s with ANY excuse isn't fair. An ATI Sunpower fixture with quality bulbs will bit any LED in the market in terms of PAR distribution, spectrum and proper coverage allowing the corals to get better growth and color.
3:21 and 3:28 shows how bad the corals were during that video. Not the T5s' fault!
Robert is a great guy!
love my AP700
Amazing!
