    Thanks for the post. Love your channel. Just one data point. I am two years retired in June in a different technical field and feel almost completely out of touch. I think you nailed it when you said that you might not be as relevant if not actively working. Maybe a hard balance to strike. Best of luck and thanks for your posts.

    I really like your videos. This one in particular definitely helped me get the creative entrepreneurial juices flowing. At present I'm an IT engineer/geek & business owner. I've owned my own company for 20+ years. To decompress I like to go scuba diving. I love being underwater with a camera(s) & lights. When I'm not doing that, for the past three years I've been doing van-life tours throughout the Northeastern corner of North America in the fall. I live on the island of St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. To be fair, I'm really more of a snowbird these days. I'm in the USVI from late November early December thru mid-June. For various reasons I started saving for retirement late in life, and as such do not have enough saved to retire. This year I am giving my IT company a makeover with the goal of being able to spend more time away from it traveling and being on the business side of a camera. I'm kicking the tires a bit to see if photography might be a good way to help finance the activities I like. None of us get out of here alive, so I'm living a working retirement while building up my nest egg.
    A thought on your merch stuff.......That may or may not be a good business for you to add. Who knows??? When you talked about it in your video, I thought about The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss. It's a good read if you haven't read it already. Long & Short. He set up a distribution system and outsourced the customer service support. What's different about his approach vs most (all) large companies....is that he gives the support engineers authority to actually solve & take care of customer problems up to $100.
    I appreciate your work and these videos :@)

    The ending comment 😂 Good video. I have a full home life with a a family and existing business. I want to quit the 9-5, but can’t figure out how to get more traction on the self employment end of things. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. 👍

    Short and to the point as always, thank you. All of your income streams flow out of your success as a commercial photographer, though. Mastery there has led to opportunities elsewhere.

    Thank you so much for this great video! I am a big fan, I love your work, and I'm grateful that you share such valuable knowledge with us. I would really like to know where did you learn photography to shoot the way you shoot today. Are there any courses, books or anything you read/did that shaped you into what you are today? HOW DO WE LEARN COMMERCIAL FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY? Could you please PLEASE make a video on that? That would be super helpful for amateurs like me. Thanks a million! :)

    I was at a show once and as I'm struggling to get close to the action a guy slammed up against me. When I looked through the camera everything was blurry, then I realized my camera was glistening with that guy's sweat.

    In certain countries, the parcel service will come to your place of business to pick up your items. Selling might work for you if the trip to the post office can be automated, otherwise thanks for the tips!

      I used to have a courier that picked up, but the ball ache was packing everything. This was for heavy handmade wooden products that needed strong boxes and bubble wrap. I sold so many I was spending a whole day each week packing them.

    I think the kit thing trancends trades. I don't lend my tools to other people, they're expensive and I don't want them broken or sweated over.

    I've got a question bro. I won't be specific, but I was recently asked to quote for a 3 days photography job. It's essentially event photography. However the client is a multi Billion! Dollar company. The event is also paying out 250k to the winner of their event. Anyhow, they want the 3 days covered. Capturing the vibe etc as an event photographer would do.
    I'm very interested to see what you would charge... Each day is a different location/venue. I've been stuck between "have I charged enough, or have I charged too much" as I'm still waiting on an answer from them.....

    What kind of backgrounds did you sell, were they your images printed on vinyl?
    I know what you mean about how tedious it is packing and shipping stuff. I love Wood working and used to sell lots of large items on Etsy, but the thing that made me quit was all the packing. It ruined my hobby.

    Speaking of sponsorships, I had a camera manufacturer (which shall be nameless) send me a T-shirt with their logo on it. I told them thanks for the shirt and how much are you going to pay me to wear it and promote their products? That went over like a lead balloon, but they ended up paying me to wear their shirt.

    Instruction - there is a camera shop near me that charges $39 per class for basic crap and they suck. They recently did a workshop on product photography that was downright laughable. Yes, there’s room for good guidance.

    Too much risk in going just youtube. Never be at the behest of just one income stream. They can change their payment algorithm and you'll lose your income instantly

  • @martinwatson9568

    I enjoyed your posts early on as I found you to be professional and informative along the lines of Daniel Norton, but unfortunately they have become way too frequent and you now run the risk of losing your credibility. Clearly you are now relying on UA-cam as your main income stream rather than your actual business. Just my opinion.

    • @TinHouseStudioUK
      @TinHouseStudioUK  Рік тому +2

      I have a team now helping me with youtube so we are putting out more content with less of my time being eaten up. I think the channel costs me about 3 days a month all in for my time, which is very manageable. Im very open about it all as I think its very important and I share all of this info on my facebook group.
      TY revenue is only about 2,5K a month at this point so I would need over a years work to be the same as one photoshoot, workshop sales and endorsements are considerably higher, but still less than doing commercial jobs at my level of work. I do however shoot far less now than when I started youtube. Bigger jobs, but far fewer. If I wasn't still a viable photographer, my agent would drop me as I would be costing her money.

    Do you include specific items on the invoice for kit renting and studio renting even if you own them or do you include them in your creative fee without telling the client? I fear they would not understand if I charge for kit I own...

    • @TinHouseStudioUK
      @TinHouseStudioUK  3 місяці тому +1

      No just that we use kit and it costs this much. I dont think anyone has ever asked for a kit list. If its mine or a rental house, the fee is the same for the shoot. Just an optin to make a bit more using your own.
