Wednesday night is always one fo our favourite nights of the festival. This years amateur ballroom was one of the hardest in recent years and the dancing was sublime from the top 96 all the way to the final and the eventual champions.
Enjoy this tango from Artem & Alika from one of the earlier rounds of the competition.

Yo, i think this is a very strong Tango. It *does* have stills and sustained slow movements. Check the line figures.
The feel is also there imo.
Quite curious what the marks and placing of this couple were.
Power is a choice, but it can work out very well if executed rightly.
Check Gozzoli Blackpool 2009 Final Tango (Just before the era of the softening of Tango). This exact Tango was of course razorsharp but also tremendously powerful. And yet no one, up to this day, made nagging remarks about that the power of *that* particular Tango, right?
Agree that there must be soft elements in a Tango, for the sake of contrast. But in the end, it is a dancesport Tango wich need *just* most of the time staccato characterization. Watch a couple without music, and recognize the dance. Well, if we let the 10~year trend of softness prevail-by the way adepted by both "federations"-we almost tend to end up with a kind of square execution of Waltz and Slow Fox.
Absolutely no hate, i am not a radical, and i do love both classical and innovative approaches.
    Word.

Heavily stylized and hypnotic. But I keep wondering how do they deal with whiplash?

Tango is losing its character. Where are the slow steps? When every step is a quick the musicality vanishes, there's no syncopation, no building of tension through a sustained slow movement. Instead, we get endless static posing. The athleticism and precision is excellent, but it lacks feel and character at a very fundamental level.
