I think George is the best unschooled guitarist ever. For a guy who knows almost no music theory, the level of skill and technique that he has achieved is phenomenal. He’s better than most schooled guitarist.

I would say George isnt schooled in the way you classify most guitar players who have left their mark over the years. George has basic knowledge, Ive heard him drop intervals and other musical terms in other lessons. He obviously knows what makes things work, but I'd say what's his most unique trait is that he's found a way to make the things that shouldn't work, work in his playing.
Eh?? George is on record many times throughout the years talking about how he has a strong grasp of music theory and openly admits to having a guitar teacher for both technique and theory. He was most candid in articles and videos from 1989 to 1993.

Technically George is one of the sloppiest players around. And it became even worse. When he's improvising, especially nowadays using his thumb and forefinger plucking technique, it's almost embarrassing. You don't have to be 60 to have good ears and an understanding of music. George is way better when he knows what he has to play from the very start. What CAN push George into some kind of top 10 is that you can always tell him from all the others. No matter if live or on an album, you always and almost immediately know "That's George Lynch". I think that's one of his biggest accomplishments. He is unique. But top 10 best guitarists? Only if you don't give a damn about clean playing. It's VERY important for every musician. Ok, it's your opinion, but...naah.

Back when this came out it didn't look so cheap. Looking at it 30 years later, you can see just how thrown together it really was. Looks like it was done in his spare time. I still love it and I still love his guitar style
i actually met george lynch and here’s the story: it was after a concert i went outside to wear the buses should be and i saw him behind a gate. then my mom yelled his name and he came over and said “i’m sorry i’m not feeling that good” and i got an autograph
I love the song Mr. Scary but after about 2/3 the way into the song at 38:30 he goes into a whole different set of chord changes and the whole thing changes for me It's like the song graduated into something a little more mature and the solo eases into a groove that elevates the song beyond mere emotional completeness I consider George to be one of the best at using the recording process to refine a song or melody to the point where it could no longer be made to be any better And layering? Forget about it! The champ! Many great memories are tied to Dokken and Lynch Mob songs so Thank you Mr. Lynch!

Fucking hell! I've read this guys name ever since 80s Kerrang!! and 22.4.19 is the first time I've heard him play. Where the fuck have I been? Now I'll go hunting his albums.
He's truly a gifted player. I was fortunate to be young player, 15 in 85 when I started playing, when Dokken started getting big from being on Mtv. I saw It's Not Love play on Mtv for the very first time. He plays some amazing solos and his improv skills are incredible for an ear learned player. Everything fits beautifully and melodically. That's the one thing I was not capable of learning. I can figure out any of his solos, but to lay down an equal solo to a rhythm track is impossible for me.

During this era of his career, no one could better Lynch. In certain attributes of facility and theoretical knowledge, sure, but in totality of axe awesomeness, not a chance. At this level of greatness there is no better or worse, just different. VERY few professional musicians will ever even approach such exalted heights of greatness. George Lynch is a treasure. Sure, the man can be "off", but when he is on, well, Mr. Scary emerges. And faces melt.

His technique is his and it’s very unique and unorthodox- his stuff is tricky to learn just because of that. Even tho playing super fast and clean is hard in its own way going up and down a scale in one way is easier than the little Flurries and slides he is amazing at doing
Some people call it the Pentatonic scale but I noticed whenever I would play it, panties would rain down on the stage so I just started calling it panty tonic because apparently it removes panties and sometimes bras would come off and ta tas ta dah thus the pan ta ta nic Either that or he got it mixed up with hair product and it was the Pantene tonic scale . Either way it’s awesome and it doesn’t matter if George calls it the pantatonic that’s what it will be referred to.

For me, for some odd reason, I just can't get it to sound smooth like George. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I think I may be pressing (er..."jacking") it too hard, because I hear the notes of the adjacent frets as "pitches" too strongly.
It’s classical vibrato technique, same thing that violinists, cello players, etc. do. The “trick” is that you really just want to roll back and forth across your fingertip without actually moving your finger’s placement. Done fast it looks like you’re doing slides inside a single fret, but you’re not really sliding if you’re doing it correctly.
The common denominators I hear between George Lynch and Jim Hendrix are: I heard both using the whammy bar, they both mostly use electric guitars, and they both use some sort of distortion. Maybe my ears are a bit messed up. Lol!!!
I'm working on pinpointing the timeline and variations of Lynch's ADA MP1 rig he was using in the late 80s. I can see one in a 2U rack behind him with his Roland SDE3000 up top, but can anyone tell me what the second unit in that rack is? My intuition tells me either a Yamaha SPX90 or R1000. Also any insight into what model Mesa head he's running through? These questions are of the utmost importance.
Chip Roberts i am not sure if he uses the ada mp-1 in that video But you should defenitely check his clinics from 1989. he is using an mp-1 in both videos an my favourite one is the one in the class room. He boosts it with a rat an uses the roland sde 3000 with a delay of 340ms and the spx is not used. He is explaining everything. So keep sure to watch the whole video. The boogie power amp you see in this video is a mesa boogie stereo simul class 295. I am quite addicted for those lynch videos where he uses the mp-1. i am a huge fan of that unit :-D
Frankly, George always sounded like a mess during the instructional portions of these videos. But the performance sections were another story ... amazing!
Yeah, he wasn’t really knowledgeable enough to teach much of anything. His own playing was an evolved form of intuition and experience, and I doubt he thought much about what made him, him. Great player, but great players aren’t necessarily great teachers

Frankly, George always sounded like a mess during the instructional portions of these videos. But the performance sections were another story ... amazing!
Yeah, he wasn’t really knowledgeable enough to teach much of anything. His own playing was an evolved form of intuition and experience, and I doubt he thought much about what made him, him. Great player, but great players aren’t necessarily great teachers
