  • In this video, I show that with a little modification, you can use 2003-2014 model mirrors on the 1992-2002 Ford Econoline Series vans and RVs. The doors are virtually the same, there was just slight changes as to where the mirrors mounted. I am working on a 1997 E-Superduty Cutaway for an RV. I wanted power mirrors and everywhere I looked for them in the 1992-2002 years, they were expensive. I even contacted the company that makes them, Velvac, and they were $1,200. I found a pair under $200 on E-bay and only needed to purchase a $12 "Step Drill Bit" to enlarge the mounting holes. I am very happy with this installation.

    Just did this swap on a 99 e350 RB to 2003 towing mirrors and I'll just add that I had to do a LOT more cutting than what's shown in the video. I eventually got it all to seat up fairly well, but ended up backing out all of the studs and using bolts instead (M6 in various lengths). I also had to cut into some fairly thick metal that concerned me, but it's done now and there's no going back.
    As far as the wiring goes, I went from power mirrors to power mirrors and was able to splice the new mirrors into the old connector using 18-22 AWG butt-end heat shrink connectors. The wire colors are almost all the same and where the new mirrors have 4 wires into 3, I just twisted wires of the same color together and it worked fine.

    I got the Mirrors Installed! Thanks! I bought the wrong ones the first goe around they were for a F250 Super Duty ! DOH! Anyway I sorted that out I kept the Mirror Heads they are bigger than the Velvacs I ended up getting. SO I have spare mirror heads saved or maybe put them on eBay. I looked everywhere for black but no dice I can always Powder coat them I think? Its just the White IS WHITE Mine is off white now with all the years gone by but Not trying to Quibble They are SAFE TO HAVE What a Difference!
    On a different Item. The Roof Cab Marker Lights of the sleeper area what do you have?
    I have 5 inch long Teardrops I had to change one out what A Mess. One of The 2 Screws holding it down kept turning and turning I could not get the nut off so I got my Wire Cutter pliers pinched it under the nut then I oiled it and managed to get the nut off it. I managed to get a nut to the bottom of the new base with washers leaving me enough thread to put the second nut on but I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT WITH THE OTHER 4 They look as bad I am keeping the Rig long term even if the engine blows some day so I would rather not have to mess with that in 10 years Im 50 now.
    Is there A Light kit that is smaller over all or do I need these because the curve I figured if I go round or just smaller anyway shape is not important getting them on and off is I would rather just use the 2 wire type light the ones on now I had to ad a second contact for the ground the lights are one wire the middle screw that holds the light cover down is where the ground is the front ground its suppose to have is useless. There are so many kits I just want to pick A 2 wire but one that is sure to work dont care what it looks like so if you see any that are between 30 and 50 let me know

      Mine are on a Class C motorhome so they are just standard type trailer lights up there. I haven't changed these out, however, I have changed them out before with LED's and I had the exact same experience that you had to deal with. It is a real pain.

      mine is the 1993 Class C 28 foot Tioga Montara Queen Ford E 350 I put it on You Tube as I make Progress I got it Cheap And it has Fuel Injection and overdrive or I would have passed but for 4000 I had to get it! Mine has the 5 inch long Trucker type Tear drops they look big Too Big I like the round pointy ones...only I think I am right at the curve so they might not lay flat
      The Way I see it I have a few options Do nothing the one light is working it has a black base so it is slightly different I can use white caulking so it looks the same or try to change others but last night I looked thru the light you can see severely oxidized nuts on there I can use A Dremel to just cut out the the original bolts if they are to far gone or re thread and seal up the OEM and put newer LEDS the water proof kind over the originals my fear is putting in the new lights when I go to screw them down if they dont anchor properly I make it worse ...DOH!
      I have found the Rubber Roof is AOK there was only a little problem at the tail light where it looks like the OEM lights had no caulking at all when I removed the rear lights to put brand new lights Direct replacements no LEDS just what it came with the right side had rot so I cut it out and made used 1/8 Aluminum box insert so it wont ever rot again. sort of like A 1/2 battery box turned on its side the left side was still perfect so I just Sealed it and added Dynamat as An extra measure of protection FUN FUN FUN...LOL NOT
      Well at least I got A good view between the walls so it all looks great so I just need to invest time and reseal the seams for peace of mind

    I see you have cotter pins on the old mirrors... That's my issue: those friction pieces have broken away over the years and the mirror bends in... You're using that to hold them in place?

    • @prohomevideos
      @prohomevideos  4 роки тому +1

      When I bought the vehicle, it had the standard mirrors with the cotter pins already there, I figured that was standard. It was convenient when you need to fold the mirrors in, just pull the pin out and then fold. Again, I am not sure if that what was standard issue but I really don't see an issue with it. I sold the old ones as the new ones do not need them.

      The only wiring needed is hooking up up the power wire to the fuse panel (always on) and the other to ground, mine still had the ring terminal on it. All of the other wires were already plugged in to the mirrors. If you need any further assistance, just ask.

      +prohomevideos Thanks for your response! I have the old factory manual mirrors on my Ford E350 Econoline 1997 Tioga Montara Fleetwood RV. This model had no previous electrical wiring in it, just manual. New mirrors are Velvac electric, and the right ones for this van per factory staff. Needs a dash wiring install, plus control panel on driver side door. No RV shop knows how to do convert from manual to electrical, and auto/van repair shops want $650 to do both sides. I feel this is too high. Is this very complicated? Does it mean battery disconnect? I'm handy. Any thoughts?

    • @prohomevideos
      @prohomevideos  7 років тому

      Hi, mine had manual mirrors as well and there was no wiring. When I bought the used mirrors off of e-bay, the package included all of the wiring already. The only thing I needed to hook up was a positive and negative to the mirrors to give the switch power. It was very simple. If I understand you correctly, you bought the correct power mirros, but it did not come with any wiring? Not sure why since it should go as a complete package. The wiring is Velvac wiring, not Ford's. It should have also come with the switch that goes on the driver's side door in place of the black triangle panel. $650 is definitely too high, I do not know why they would charge so much. Maybe since there is absolutely no wires that came with your mirrors. No battery disconnect needed. All I did was hook up the power wire to the fuse box (always on) and the negative lead to an already existing place where ground was hooked up. If you need me to provide you with anything else, I will but without that wiring harness from the original mirror, I have no glue.

    • @prohomevideos

      I doubt it, but if you get power mirrors, you hook the positive to a "always on" section on the fuse panel, and the negative to ground. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

      I was over at Ebay I did find A Manual for the Drivers side but the Passenger side all they have is Power and heat I figured Since I wont be adjusting the Passenger side Often could I just push the mirror carefully in place? One other thing I emailed them because they have it listed as F350 not E350 I dont want to get the wrong thing. What should I tell them I have so I dont confuse them?...LOL
      I can get the Item number or if you remember who you bought from One Seller is Discount Auto Experts and the other is Fast Lane USA Store. Fast Lane is Sneaky they sell one for 75 but want 230 for the second one and Discount Auto does not have full manual pairs SO I figured I would love to get the 102 Inch Wide MAX for 150.00 From Discount Auto Experts for both 75 a piece! There is also A shorter Arm 96 Incher from both Sellers but mine are already the 15 or 16 inch long arms. I dont think they are original to my Rig I posted A Video of the Rig I am not sure if you can see the mirrors very well but they are similar to yours already and mine is a 1993 So I wonder if they are OEM or Someone else already modified them to fit. I will do A daytime Video Tomorrow I am going to restore it how it was when it was newer anyway..LOL it only has 88k miles I dont know if thats alot or not but sure is quiet. And Strongish. Sorry for Going on and On I am the type that thinks it thru as I type it drives my family crazy no Abbreviations Except for LMAO and LOL I dont know many beside I would probably forget it anyway but I do like to LMAO from time to time Thanks for the help I hope your at least laughing at me if not with me ..Cool CYA

      Thanks for the Motivation! And the Advise its working out for me
      I just took off the mirrors they are bolted on 3 bolts close together that hold it at the bottom. The to additional 2 bolt holes one upper one lower hold the outside plastic piece with the nut on the inside Of course I lost one it dropped down So I will go get another one later once I see whats in the kit. I settled for the Chrome Mirror head with black arms manual. 205 bucks but I had A Ebay hi volume buyer discount took it down to 185.00 So there is that I did not want the chrome but they wanted 171 for just the left in black manual and 75.00 for the right in manual I checked to make sure it was not in Error price wise. Apparently the Manual Black are sought after. I will put transparent plastic on the mirror heads on trips like I do with the hood front they sell this cool easy on tint similar to Vehicle wrap only in clear or any color you want I use it where I dont want to spend a whole day removing bugs. its cheap by comparison just a few bucks for a sheet

      On a more serious note I was out at the wheels looking for the Valve Stem I had just finished washing the RV so my hands were wet I knelt down to steady myself I touched the Rear Left Wheel And Got A Shock! My dog had cried out a couple days ago around where we were trimming our Camelina Its a climber vine thing and anyway I thought maybe he stepped on a Thorn then yesterday around the back same thing cried out but I see nothing wrong I am thinking the RV is Haunted? Maybe thats whats scaring the Dog Now I think he must have been sniffing the Wheel and he too got shocked. What do I do? Just Kill the Breakers and turn them on one by one? Maybe connect my Ohms Meter to the wheel to see if it still has voltage coming thru it? Or could it be the 12 Volts system? I have no dead batteries so this is weird...The Joy of someone elses hidden treasures. Someone else must have noticed because he put new tires on it the week before I went to pick it up unless they had gloves on.

    • @prohomevideos
      @prohomevideos  8 років тому

      Most of it was easy, the only tricky part was getting the wire through the black rubber boot where the door hinge is but I used a small metal wire with duct tape.
